  • The Beautiful

    The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh

RECOMMENDED: The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh is $2.99! Kiki gave this one a B+:

Many readers WILL be enthralled with the emotion of Bastien and Celine and for them the final sections of the book will be as thrilling as they were surely meant to be. Think that might be you? Go out and get yourself some Victorian era New Orleans vampires.

New York Times bestselling author Renée Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight.

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as Le Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sèbastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of Le Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sèbastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

  • Heroine Complex

    Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn

RECOMMENDEDHeroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn is $1.99! This is the first book in the Heroine Complex series and it’s one that Carrie loves. She reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

You usually can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but honestly you can totally judge this book by its cover, which features two Asian heroines with obviously different personalities, a demonic cupcake (can’t get enough of those) and bright colors. If that cover causes grabby hand syndrome, then yes, you will adore the book.

Being a superheroine is hard. Working for one is even harder.

Evie Tanaka is the put-upon personal assistant to Aveda Jupiter, her childhood best friend and San Francisco’s most beloved superheroine. She’s great at her job—blending into the background, handling her boss’s epic diva tantrums, and getting demon blood out of leather pants.

Unfortunately, she’s not nearly as together when it comes to running her own life, standing up for herself, or raising her tempestuous teenage sister, Bea.

But everything changes when Evie’s forced to pose as her glamorous boss for one night, and her darkest secret comes out: she has powers, too. Now it’s up to her to contend with murderous cupcakes, nosy gossip bloggers, and supernatural karaoke battles—all while juggling unexpected romance and Aveda’s increasingly outrageous demands. And when a larger threat emerges, Evie must finally take charge and become a superheroine in her own right…or see her city fall to a full-on demonic invasion.

  • The Women’s War

The Women’s War by Jenna Glass

The Women’s War by Jenna Glass is $1.99! So I have this book and let me tell you my thought process; I haven’t read it yet. I’m on the fence about reproduction being so tied to womanhood, but the description says it’s a feminist and revolutionary fantasy. I’m hoping there’s some major subversion here and I’m also getting Lysistrata vibes. Have you read this one?

In a feminist fantasy epic, a revolutionary spell gives women the ability to control their own fertility—with consequences that rock their patriarchal society to its core.

    “A compulsive read, riveting characters, life-or-death stakes . . . a smashing book!”—Tamora Pierce

When a nobleman’s first duty is to produce a male heir, women are treated like possessions and bargaining chips. But as the aftereffects of a world-altering spell ripple out physically and culturally, women at last have a bargaining chip of their own. And two women in particular find themselves at the liberating crossroads of change.

Alys is the widowed mother of two adolescent children, and the disinherited daughter of a king. Her existence has been carefully regulated, but now she discovers a fierce talent not only for politics but also for magic—once deemed solely the domain of men. Meanwhile, in a neighboring kingdom, young Ellin finds herself unexpectedly on the throne after the sudden death of her grandfather the king and everyone else who stood ahead of her in the line of succession. Conventional wisdom holds that she will marry quickly, then quietly surrender the throne to her new husband. Only, Ellin has other ideas.

The tensions building in the two kingdoms grow abruptly worse when a caravan of exiled women and their escort of disgraced soldiers stumble upon a new source of magic in what was once uninhabitable desert. This new and revolutionary magic—which only women can wield—might well tear down what is left of the patriarchy. The men who currently hold power will do anything to retain it. But what force in the world can stand against the courage and resolution of generations of women who have tasted freedom for the very first time?

  • Fix Her Up

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey is $2.99! I’m a huge Bailey fan, but this one didn’t do it for me, mainly because it had some tropes that aren’t my bag. If you enjoyed this one, feel free to leave a comment below!

New York Times bestseller Tessa Bailey launches a super sexy new series featuring the blue collar men who work for a HGTV-esque house flipping business.

After an injury ends Travis Ford’s major league baseball career, he returns home to start over. He just wants to hammer out his frustrations at his new construction gig and forget all about his glory days. But he can’t even walk through town without someone recapping his greatest hits. Or making a joke about his… bat. And then there’s Georgie, his buddy’s little sister, who is definitely not a kid anymore.

Georgette Castle has crushed on her older brother’s best friend for years. The grumpy, bear of a man working for her family’s house flipping business is a far cry from the charming sports star she used to know. But a moody scowl doesn’t scare her and Georgie’s determined to show Travis he’s more than a pretty face and a batting average, even if it means putting her feelings aside to be “just friends.”

Travis wants to brood in peace. But the girl he used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman who makes him feel whole again. And he wants her. So damn bad. Except Georgie’s off limits and he knows he can’t give her what she deserves. But she’s becoming the air he breathes and Travis can’t stay away, no matter how hard he tries…

  1. Bea says:

The plotline of The Women’s War… sounds like a book that is in conversation with The Gate to Women’s Country and would probably make a really interesting college course combined with Handmaid’s Tale and The Yellow Wallpaper.

  2. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

@Bea, I had the exact same thought.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I think it’s interesting to look back to the early-to-mid 1960s when the birth-control pill was first introduced and the very same arguments were being put forth for reasons why women should not be able to choose to use the pill: that they would be able to control their reproductive lives AND, with that, have sex without reproductive consequences (unless they desired them). Female agency? Clutch the pearls and gasp! THE WOMEN’S WAR seems like an interesting book, but I’m too tired of dealing with this shit in real life to want to read it in a symbolic incarnation.

  4. Heather M says:

I’m not sure The Women’s War is quite what I’m up for right now…but wow that cover is DYNAMITE. I love it.

  5. Kay says:

Joanna Shupe’s The Prince of Broadway is $1.99 for Kindle. I picked this one up even though I missed the sale for the first book in the series. I haven’t read Shupe before, but I know she’s been mentioned here.

  6. SusanH says:

Amazon has a bundle of three Georgette Heyer novels called “Georgette Heyer’s Greatest Hits” for $3.03. It has Frederica (probably my favorite of hers), The Grand Sophy, and Arabella, along with a novella called To Have the Honor.

Content warning for The Grand Sophy, which is marred by a very unpleasant bit of anti-semitism involving a Jewish moneylender. If it weren’t for that scene, it would be one of my very favorite of her novels. As it is, I skip that chapter.

  7. Emily B says:

I am also a huge Tessa Bailey fan but Fix Her Up didn’t really stick with me – it wasn’t bad, just not her best. I’ll probably still read the upcoming entries in the series though.

  8. Mich says:

Deanna Raybourn’s Veronica Speedwell #3 is $2.99. I believe that it’s a monthly Kindle deal.

  9. Maite says:

    Thanks SusanH!
I keep meaning to try out Heyer, but I’d been wary of the antisemitism. This deal, combined with your content warning, is a most excellent place to try it out.

  10. Nicole says:

I read The Women’s War, and it’s really heavy, dark stuff. All the TW/CW: rape, murder, torture, limbs get cut off, ritual suicide, miscarriage, abortion. Marriages are implied to be mostly nonconsensual, and women who act out or don’t get married or don’t produce kids (basically, divorce) become prostitutes involuntarily. There is, so far as the book knows, exactly one guy who does not rape/murder/disfigure women with impunity when given the chance, although that one guy is pretty great. Much like Game of Thrones, whatever progress you think has been made by the end of the book is offset by the unjust killing of someone who didn’t deserve it (not the brains of the rebellion, at least). So… Prepare yourself. It’s not a happy book.

  11. taffygrrl says:

Lestat de Lioncourt is one of New Orleans’ most famous literary vampires. Makes me wonder if Le Cour des Lions is meant as an homage.

  12. taffygrrl says:

Heroine Complex is a delightful romp! If I didn’t already have it I would be buying it. If you’re looking for escapism right now, it’s perfect.

  13. Gail Denow says:

The Beautiful sounds like it just what I need right now. Going directly to my Apple account. Thanks!
