  • The Firebird

    The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley

The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! Guest reviewer Malin gave it a B+:

It’s a big book, which takes its time to reveal all its secrets, and I especially loved the sections set in St. Petersburg, which I was lucky enough to visit about five years back. This book really made me want to return.

    Two Women.
    One Mysterious Relic.
    Separated By Centuries.

Nicola Marter was born with a gift so rare and dangerous, she kept it buried deep. When she encounters a desperate woman trying to sell a small wooden carving called “The Firebird,” claiming it belonged to Russia’s Empress Catherine, it’s a problem. There’s no proof.

But Nicola’s held the object. She knows the woman is telling the truth.

Beloved by readers as varied and adventurous as her novels, you will never forget spending time in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susanna Kearsley’s world.

  • Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber is $2.99! This seems to be women’s fiction with some magical realism and yummy food descriptions. Seeing as I love Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen a lot, this should be right up my alley, but I’ve been hesitant to add it to my TBR.

Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café.

It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.

As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

  • Sworn to Silence

Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo

RECOMMENDED: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo is $2.99! Elyse LOVED this book and gave it an A+:

If you love thrillers with a little romance (or romance with A LOT of thriller) and you want something totally different from what’s being published right now, go buy this book. You won’t be disappointed.

A killer is preying on sacred ground….

In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and “English” residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.

Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She’s certain she’s come to terms with her past—until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past—and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.

  1. Lara says:

I barely made it through the first 50 or so pages of “Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe”. It felt very Hallmark-movie to me, everyone was calling each other “honey”. Plus, I could be wrong, but it felt like the text was violently foreshadowing “big-city girl unwillingly takes over small-town family business, and finds tranquility and belonging and a man whether she wanted to or not”, and I am very tired of those plots.

That said, if ever there was a time for Hallmark plots, it is now.

  2. Silver James says:

I, on the other hand, am not so fond of Hallmark movies but absolutely adored MIDNIGHT AT THE BLACKBIRD CAFE. Maybe because I grew up in the South, I “got” this book. And I adored the magical realism in it. I gave it five stars. It’s as sweet as the scent of magnolia blossoms on a hot summer day and as sassy as mint tea. It is magical and lyrical. The characters are true and each has a journey. There’s a cat and a bird and a good dog named River. There’s birth and death and promises to keep. There are old wrongs and new rights. There’s laying the past to rest and waking up the future. There’s sorrow and joy, hellos and goodbyes. And beneath it all, there’s the love that comes from mulberries, blackbirds, and pie. I got it from the library and now I’m off to one-click to put it on my keeper shelft.

  3. Cadence says:

I like the Linda Castillo series but don’t read them all together. She does some recycling of descriptions which gets repetitive. However, for the most part, they are edge-of-the-seat, well-researched thrillers.

  4. Debs says:

I enjoyed MIDNIGHT AT THE BLACKBIRD CAFE but I really do tend to like books with magical realism and food!
I highly recommend SWORN TO SILENCE.

  5. Leigh Kramer says:

The Firebird is one of my favorite Kearsley novels!

  6. MaryK says:

Fated (Alex Verus Book 1) by Benedict Jacka is 1.99. It’s UF. I’ve been wanting fantasy adventure type books and liked the sample enough to buy it. I’m about 65% through and so far so good.

  7. SusanK says:

Artistic License by Elle Pierson (aka Lucy Parker) is free again on Amazon
