  • Written in Red

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

RECOMMENDED BY MANY: Written in Red by Anne Bishop is $2.99! This is the first book in The Others series. I love this series and many readers of the site do too. However, there was a great discussion last time this was on sale about the erasure of indigenous peoples. A content warning for the book, as it does feature self-harm. I will also note that I found Meg, the heroine, to be a little Mary Sue-ish at first, but she really comes into her own.

As a “cassandra sangue,” or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut–a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard–a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

  • Unmarriageable

    Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal

Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal is $1.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and is a Pride and Prejudice retelling set in Pakistan. Readers found this to be a fun and comforting read, though mentioned it follows the P&P plot line a bit too closely.

In this one-of-a-kind retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in modern-day Pakistan, Alys Binat has sworn never to marry—until an encounter with one Mr. Darsee at a wedding makes her reconsider.

A scandal and vicious rumor concerning the Binat family have destroyed their fortune and prospects for desirable marriages, but Alys, the second and most practical of the five Binat daughters, has found happiness teaching English literature to schoolgirls. Knowing that many of her students won’t make it to graduation before dropping out to marry and have children, Alys teaches them about Jane Austen and her other literary heroes and hopes to inspire the girls to dream of more.

When an invitation arrives to the biggest wedding their small town has seen in years, Mrs. Binat, certain that their luck is about to change, excitedly sets to work preparing her daughters to fish for rich, eligible bachelors. On the first night of the festivities, Alys’s lovely older sister, Jena, catches the eye of Fahad “Bungles” Bingla, the wildly successful—and single—entrepreneur. But Bungles’s friend Valentine Darsee is clearly unimpressed by the Binat family. Alys accidentally overhears his unflattering assessment of her and quickly dismisses him and his snobbish ways. As the days of lavish wedding parties unfold, the Binats wait breathlessly to see if Jena will land a proposal—and Alys begins to realize that Darsee’s brusque manner may be hiding a very different man from the one she saw at first glance.

Told with wry wit and colorful prose, Unmarriageable is a charming update on Jane Austen’s beloved novel and an exhilarating exploration of love, marriage, class, and sisterhood.

  • Shadow Magic

    Shadow Magic by Patricia Wrede

Shadow Magic by Patricia C. Wrede is $1.99! This is a fantasy novel first published in the early 80s and is the first book in the Lyra series. Some found the first installment a littler boring, but say that the series gets better with each book. For those who have read it, what do you think?

Alethia listens as her father Braca questions heir Har and friend Maurin, back from Lyra borders where other caravans have disappeared. Her mother Isme has a bad feeling. The night of her twentieth birthday party, Alethia is kidnapped by enemy Lithmern, led by a man with no face, and a body of black smoke.

But the woods are protected by Wyrd, small furry archers, and Ward-Keeper mage Jordet, of the tall silver-haired Shee. Soon the Noble House of Brenn must decide whether to ally with mythical races, including the sea-dwelling Neira. While the other eight Noble Houses squabble, the evil Shadow Men rise, and seek the five lost treasures of Alkyra that used to unite the four races.

  • Geekerella

    Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Geekerella by Ashley Poston is $2.99! This is a YA Cinderella retelling with lots of nerdery and set at a convention. Readers found this one to be pretty adorable, but rather forgettable once they finished. Have you read this one?

Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale.

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.

  1. Penny says:

Amazon has an offer “Buy $20 on ebooks, get $5 credit” I’m definitely taking advantage of… if anyone else is buying ebooks without restraint right now like me, every little bit helps!

  2. Meg says:

Having now read most of The Others series since this came up last fall – I’m glad I had the content warnings for self-harm and indigeneous erasure going in. I wish I’d had a content warning for severe heteropatriarchy, which gets worse as the series goes on and is why I eventually got to the point of DNF.

  3. MGW says:

I’d recommend the Patricia C Wrede series! A note that they are all in the same world and in each one the protagonists are facing a similar evil, but the books don’t share any characters and take place on different countries/continents in the world across different times.

  4. LaurieF says:

Thornfruit from Ellen’s review posted today is free on all the platforms. I went to wishlist it and bought it instead.

  5. Amanda C says:

Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal is showing up as $12.99 on Amazon

  6. Darlynne says:

I thoroughly enjoyed GEEKERELLA. Can I remember any details? Not so much, but I still recommend it, particularly for Elle and how she perseveres.

  7. Maria B says:

Other content warning for the Others books — including the first one, I believe — is a LOT of sexual assault. It’s never glamorized but it’s vivid and pretty dark.

  8. Deborah says:

I really miss the “like” button:

Thanks for the heads up on free THORNFRUIT, @LaurieF
    and
thanks for the content warning on the Others books, @Maria B!

  9. Bronte says:

I loved written in red. Went to buy unmarriageable but it doesn’t seem on sale anywhere:(
