This *might* be What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long? They have a convo on a walk about whores and horses (he says whores and then claims she misheard him when she’s like, whores?!?!) and she is being super quiet, etc., because the guy she loves is about to propose to her good friend. Even if this isn’t the HaBo, I love this book :).
What I Did for a Duke is my favorite JAL! I am currently binge reading her contemporary series in Hellcat Canyon.
