  • The Glass Ocean

The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams

RECOMMENDED: The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White is $2.99! This is historical fiction and Elyse gave it a B+:

Historical fiction is my jam. Historical fiction with a side of trans-Atlantic research flirting even more so. The Glass Ocean didn’t work perfectly for me, but it made me eager for another Williams/Willig/ White novel.

From the New York Times bestselling authors of The Forgotten Room comes a captivating historical mystery, infused with romance, that links the lives of three women across a century—two deep in the past, one in the present—to the doomed passenger liner, RMS Lusitania.

    May 2013
Her finances are in dire straits and bestselling author Sarah Blake is struggling to find a big idea for her next book. Desperate, she breaks the one promise she made to her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother and opens an old chest that belonged to her great-grandfather, who died when the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1915. What she discovers there could change history. Sarah embarks on an ambitious journey to England to enlist the help of John Langford, a recently disgraced Member of Parliament whose family archives might contain the only key to the long-ago catastrophe. . . .

    April 1915
Southern belle Caroline Telfair Hochstetter’s marriage is in crisis. Her formerly attentive industrialist husband, Gilbert, has become remote, pre-occupied with business . . . and something else that she can’t quite put a finger on. She’s hoping a trip to London in Lusitania’s lavish first-class accommodations will help them reconnect—but she can’t ignore the spark she feels for her old friend, Robert Langford, who turns out to be on the same voyage. Feeling restless and longing for a different existence, Caroline is determined to stop being a bystander, and take charge of her own life. . . .

Tessa Fairweather is traveling second-class on the Lusitania, returning home to Devon. Or at least, that’s her story. Tessa has never left the United States and her English accent is a hasty fake. She’s really Tennessee Schaff, the daughter of a roving con man, and she can steal and forge just about anything. But she’s had enough. Her partner has promised that if they can pull off this one last heist aboard the Lusitania, they’ll finally leave the game behind. Tess desperately wants to believe that, but Tess has the uneasy feeling there’s something about this job that isn’t as it seems. . . .

As the Lusitania steams toward its fate, three women work against time to unravel a plot that will change the course of their own lives . . . and history itself.

  • Some Girls Bite

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill is $1.99! Urban fantasy with some hints of romance, Some Girls Bite is the first book in the Chicagoland Vampire series. The cover had a pretty big facelift, by the way, and I think it’s actually an improvement. Some found the books elements a little silly (i.e. continuous Buffy references), while others really enjoyed them. Have you read this one?

First in a brand new series about a Chicago graduate student’s introduction into a society of vampires.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Lord o the Manor Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred- year-old vampire, he has centuries worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects her gratitude and servitude. But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war and there will be blood.

  • The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic

The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker

The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker is $1.99! This book was the subject of a solved HaBO. I highly recommend checking out the HaBO because the request is totally bananas. So bananas that you just might have to read it.

An imaginative story of a woman caught in an alternate world—where she will need to learn the skills of magic to survive

Nora Fischer’s dissertation is stalled and her boyfriend is about to marry another woman.  During a miserable weekend at a friend’s wedding, Nora wanders off and walks through a portal into a different world where she’s transformed from a drab grad student into a stunning beauty.  Before long, she has a set of glamorous new friends and her romance with gorgeous, masterful Raclin is heating up. It’s almost too good to be true.

Then the elegant veneer shatters. Nora’s new fantasy world turns darker, a fairy tale gone incredibly wrong. Making it here will take skills Nora never learned in graduate school. Her only real ally—and a reluctant one at that—is the magician Aruendiel, a grim, reclusive figure with a biting tongue and a shrouded past. And it will take her becoming Aruendiel’s student—and learning magic herself—to survive. When a passage home finally opens, Nora must weigh her “real life” against the dangerous power of love and magic.

  1. Laurel says:

I really enjoyed the Chicagoland Vampire series of books, and I don’t think they go on sale very often. Some Girls Bite is pretty good and I recommend it, particularly if you like urban fantasy. Unfortunately the publisher, for whatever reason, has kept the prices high on the last few books in the series, which I find really exasperating for an ebook.

  2. Susan says:

@Laurel: No surprise–the publisher is Penguin (Ace). That’s their business model for some inexplicable reason. Does it really work for them? In my case, it just means that I, a massive UF fan, picked up book #1 on sale years ago, and no others since. At least they didn’t pull the stunt where they priced the ebooks higher than the dead tree books–that’s another of their brilliant strategies. So many Penguin books I’ll never own/read.

  3. Angstriddengoddess says:

Warning about The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic: this ends on a cliff hanger. If you’re the sort of person who wants to wait until a series is complete before reading, this is not the book for you. The author has been working on the sequel for six years.

  4. EllenM says:

I LOVE the thinking woman’s guide to real magic but concur with the above – maybe wait until we have news on the sequel before diving in!

  5. MirandaB says:

“has kept the prices high on the last few books in the series, which I find really exasperating for an ebook.”

Yep. If my library ever picks up the series, I’ll finish it, but I’m not paying 11.99 or whatever for a 4-year-old book.

CS Harris’ St. Cyr series is the same. I was trying to wait to pick up the last 3 on Kindle, but I’m about to check them out of the library and read them that way.

  6. DonnaMarie says:

Thanks for the heads up, ladies. Between George R. R. Martin & Diana Gabaldon, who needs another series that goes on years long hiatus?

  7. Joy says:

@DonnaMarie, I don’t know but sometimes you can kind of ponder and make up your own ending. After all with GOT, they have gone beyond his books (I think he has writers block with GOT) with the TV movie and are going to finish it this season. Took his ball and are going to play with it. I don’t think he dares taking up where he left off and finishing it since so many fans now have the TV version in their mind.

  8. SusanK says:

At Your Service by Sandra Antonelli is on sale at Amazon for $0.99. It has an older couple and I think it’s been mentioned here before???

  9. PamG says:

    @DonnaMarie
And let us not forget Patrick Rothfuss.
