  • Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

  • My Once and Future Duke

My Once and Future Duke by Caroline Linden

My Once and Future Duke by Caroline Linden is $1.99! This is the first book in The Wagers of Sin historical romance series. Elyse wasn’t a fan of this book because she’s over heroes using heroines as pawns for revenge. However, others loved how the romance developed between the two main characters.

What happens at the infamous Vega Club . . .

Sophie Campbell is determined to be mistress of her own fate. Surviving on her skill at cards, she never risks what she can’t afford to lose. Yet when the Duke of Ware proposes a scandalous wager that’s too extravagant to refuse, she can’t resist. If she wins, she’ll get five thousand pounds, enough to secure her independence forever.

Stays at the Vega Club . . .

Jack Lindeville, Duke of Ware, tells himself he’s at the Vega Club merely to save his reckless brother from losing everything, but he knows it’s a lie. He can’t keep his eyes off Sophie, and to get her he breaks his ironclad rule against gambling. If he wins, he wants her—for a week.

    Until now.

A week with Jack could ruin what’s left of Sophie’s reputation. It might even cost her her heart. But when it comes to love, all bets are off . . .

  • Flashpoint Series Collection

Flashpoint Series Collection by Rachel Grant

Flashpoint Series Collection by Rachel Grant is 99c! We’ve featured a couple of these romantic suspense titles before, but now you can get all three books in the series plus a bonus novella for less than a dollar. I’ve been meaning to get my hands on these books, so I will definitely take advantage of this deal.

Don’t miss these four pulse-pounding, edge of your seat, steamy military thrillers! Get the first three books in the series—all named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of the Year—plus a never-before-published novella!

The adventure heats up in TINDERBOX when an archaeologist races across the desert to seek protection at a US military base, and is saved from an explosion by a solder who kindles a different kind of fire. Temperatures rise further in CATALYST, when an American aid worker is abducted and her only hope for rescue is the Green Beret she once wronged. In FIRESTORM, a CIA operator and Special Forces soldier set off to stop a coup and find a conspiracy that could ignite all of Africa, while in INFERNO, government relations have reached the flashpoint, and a diplomat and Green Beret must work together to douse the flames.

    TINDERBOX
In the volatile tinderbox of the Horn of Africa, Morgan Adler has made the paleoanthropological find of a lifetime. The discovery brings her to the attention of a warlord eager to claim both Morgan and the fossils, forcing her to make a desperate dash to the nearby US military base to beg for protection.

Master Sergeant Pax Blanchard has orders to intercept Dr. Adler before she reaches the base, and in so doing saves her life. After a harrowing afternoon he safely delivers her to his commanders, only to find his responsibilities toward protecting the obstinate archaeologist have only just begun.

Morgan and Pax are forced to work together in the Djiboutian desert heat, but it is the fire that ignites between them that threatens to combust them both. For the Green Beret, involvement with the woman he must protect is a threat to his career, while for the archaeologist, the soldier is everything she never wanted but somehow can’t resist. When Morgan uncovers a mystery surrounding Djibouti’s most scarce and vital resource, the danger to her reaches the flashpoint. For Pax, protecting her is no longer a matter of following orders, and he’ll risk everything to bring her back alive.

    CATALYST
When a food storage depot in famine-struck South Sudan is torched, American aid worker Brie Stewart flees, only to land in a market where she’s the next item up for auction. Is the attack on the aid facility another assault upon the war-torn fledgling democracy, or has her family set her up as a pawn in their quest for oil rights?

Chief Warrant Officer Sebastian Ford crossed paths with Brie years ago when she was a shill for her family’s company, pushing a pipeline that threatened his tribe’s land. Determined to lead the rescue operation to save her, he won’t let her abduction—or the attraction that flares between them—get in the way of settling their unfinished business.

The Green Beret’s skills are put to the test in the flooded grasslands of South Sudan, where they must battle nature and dangerous factions who are after more than oil. Bastian and Brie put their hearts on the line as they find themselves embroiled in a conflict that extends beyond country and continent. Together they must douse the spark before it reaches the flashpoint and engulfs everything they hold dear.

    FIRESTORM
CIA covert operator Savannah James is after intel on a potential coup in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but she needs a partner fluent in Lingala to infiltrate the organization. Sergeant First Class Cassius Callahan is the perfect choice, except he doesn’t like her very much. He doesn’t trust her, either, despite the sparks that flare between them, fierce and hot. Still, he accepts the assignment even though their cover requires Savvy to pose as his mistress.

They enter battle-worn Congo to expose the financing for the coup. A trail of cobalt, gold, and diamonds leads them into the heart of a jungle in which everyone is desperate to find the mother lode of ore and gems. Betrayal stalks them as they follow the money, but Savvy will stop at nothing to bring down the would-be dictator before he can ignite a firestorm that will engulf all of Africa.

Deep in the sultry rainforest, spy and Green Beret forge a relationship more precious than diamonds, but Cal knows Savvy is willing to sacrifice anything—or anyone—to complete her mission. As they near the flashpoint, Cal will have to save her from the greatest threat of all: herself.

    INFERNO
US Embassy Officer Kaylea Halpert needs a date for a black tie event at a dangerous foreign national’s lavish home. Preferably someone with brains and brawn who can watch her back. Special Forces Sergeant Carlos Espinosa is more than happy to escort the beautiful, brilliant diplomat—who just might be a CIA case officer—to the party. Their night together only gets hotter when he discovers Kaylea burns for him too.

Date night in Djibouti turns deadly when foreign agents target the couple. But who is the intended victim, the covert operator or the Green Beret? As Carlos and Kaylea use their combined skills to escape their captors, they uncover treachery that could ignite relations between the US and Djibouti—already at a flashpoint—and trigger an inferno.

  • The Magical Romantic Comedy Starter Pack

The Magical Romantic Comedy Starter Pack by R.J. Blain

The Magical Romantic Comedy Starter Pack by R.J. Blain is 99c! This series seems to be urban fantasy with romantic elements and just some bonkers scenarios. We’ve featured the first book on sale before, but this collection contains four full books and three novellas.

This collection contains four novels and three novellas, including Playing with Fire, Hoofin’ It, Serial Killer Princess, Whatever for Hire, Hearth, Home, and Havoc, Owl Be Yours, and Fowl Play.

    Playing with Fire

What do you get when you mix gorgons, an incubus, and the Calamity Queen? Trouble, and lots of it.

For Bailey, catering to the magical is a tough gig on a good day, but she has few other options. She can either keep spiking drinks with pixie dust to keep the locals happy, or spend the rest of her life cleaning up some of the world’s nastiest magical substances.

Years after helping Police Chief Samuel Quinn escape an unhappy marriage, Bailey is once again entangled in his personal affairs. To make matters worse, Quinn’s ex-wife is angling for revenge, tossing Bailey into the deep end along with her sexiest enemy.

    Hoofin’ It

All Shane wanted was to get away from the wreckage of his career for a while. He picked New York City to provide him with a distraction from his early, unwanted retirement from the police force.

New York City delivered, distracting him with three corpses and a miniature llama with a spitting problem and an attitude. If he wants to return to a normal life, he’ll have to face off against a sex trafficking ring targeting the woman of his dreams, ancient vampires, murderous criminals, his parents, and an FBI agent with a hidden agenda.

Some days, it isn’t easy being an ex-cop.

    Serial Killer Princess

Why would anyone put a mermaid and a gorgon in the same room together? While Tulip enjoys being alive, her lineage brings her nothing but trouble.

Snakes eat fish, and the mer love tearing apart their serpentine nemeses with their hands and teeth. As for the gorgons… she’d rather not think about them at all.

The last thing Tulip wants is to rule the mer kingdom. First, she can barely swim. Second, she’s packing more than her fair share of her father’s genes. Third, what is a landlocked princess supposed to do with an aquatic kingdom?

If she gets her way, nothing. Add in her dirty little serial killing secret, and she’s an international disaster waiting to happen.

    Whatever for Hire

Fetching a cat out of a tree should’ve been a quick, easy fifty bucks in Kanika’s pocket. Instead, following one stray thought, the devil pays her a visit and leaves her with a debt to repay.

    Hearth, Home, and Havoc

Dakota never intended to become the single mother of a goddess. To make matters worse, her daughter hadn’t quite figured out her role in the grand scheme of things.

Havoc isn’t supposed to be part of Hestia’s portfolio, but where the young goddess of the hearth and home goes, trouble surely follows.

When Dakota’s ex-husband barrels his way back into her life, a heavy dose of havoc is just what the doctor ordered. She just never expected to find love in the midst of murder.

    Owl Be Yours

After a wildfire took everything from her, Emily Hall made do surviving as a homeless human by day and as an owl at night. When one of the men responsible for infecting her with lycanthropy comes winging his way back into her life, she must choose between revenge or resuming a normal life.

Until Daniel’s return, she never dreamed she might be able to have both.

    Fowl Play

Instead of a quiet dance retreat where she could escape the insanity of being the daughter of an angel, a succubus, and a lycanthrope, Emma Sansaul plummets into the middle of murder, mayhem, and mischief. As becoming the next victim of a crazed serial killer is not on her itinerary, she’s left with no choice but to join forces with Agent Kenneth Bernard to find the murderer, the one man on Earth capable of making her hissing mad one second and in need of a cold shower the next.

Think of England by KJ Charles is $0.99 at Amazon (US) right now!

  2. cbackson says:

Seconding the rec for Into the Drowning Deep, and very much agree with the grade. The setup is excellent and the cast of characters is fantastic and well-developed, but it did feel like it fizzled at the end. The climactic battle worked for me but the aftermath didn’t really deliver resolution for the characters or the overall mermaid situation. And yet, it definitely didn’t read to me as if it were setting up for a sequel, so the overall impression was that it was unfinished.

I wouldn’t read the prequel novella, Rolling in the Deep, until after you read the novel, btw – I think the sense of discovery would have been greater if I didn’t already know what happened to the Atargatis.

  3. Jiobal says:

I bought Playing with Fire when it went on sale last time (because Unicorn, or in this case Cindercorn), and it is completely bonkers – reminds me more of Mary Jane Davidson than Thea Harrison, even though the world-building is more closely related to the later. Lots of fun, anyway.

  4. Jeannette says:

Another recommendation for the R.J. Blain ‘Magical Romantic Comedy’ series. They were recommended (I think on a ‘what are you reading’ post) and I bought them at full price earlier this year. I rated them around 3/5 (lesser for some of the short stories, higher for the novels). They are stand-alone romantic capers written in the same world with few overlapping characters. They also range all over the US – from NY to Chicago to Savannah, with a decent sense of place. Several were from the hero’s point of view completely, which made for a deviation from most urban fantasy.
And then there is the concept of Serial Killer Princess. The idea of it is what got me hooked. For $.99 you can’t go wrong!

  5. cbackson says:

I can’t believe I just one-clicked that crazysauce, but they had me at “Date Night in Djibouti.”

  6. JenM says:

I’ve read a few of R.J. Blain’s books and they are pretty bonkers (although in a good way). Sometimes there’s a bit too much going on and she kind of loses control of her plot, but it’s all in good fun and for this price, you can’t go wrong giving her a try. She also has a blog that is usually pretty darn funny, in which the entries are written by one of her cats. Also, her heroines are usually pretty competent and her heroes are definitely not alpha holes (they tend to be of the caretaker alpha type).

  7. Kristen says:

The Rachel Grant books are soooo good.

  8. sarahinsf says:

I recently discovered Rachel Grant and have been just devouring her books. The set on sale here is my personal favorite so far.

Also, my professional background is similar to hers and I can tell you that many of her details about cultural heritage laws, archeology practice, land use politics, etc are pretty spot on. If any of that is your jam, her books are definitely worth trying!

  9. Rachel Martin says:

I am currently reading a fantastic Histo Rom called An Improbable pairing by Gary Dickson, garydickson.us. He has it set in Paris, in the 1960’s, I don’t think it get’s any better that that! The love story is as the title suggests and it reminds me that no matter what you need to be happy! So good. I am very intrigued after hearing about Rachel Grant, I haven’t read any of her books, I think I need too!
