  • A Duke Changes Everything

A Duke Changes Everything by Christy Carlyle

A Duke Changes Everything by Christy Carlyle is $1.99! This is a historical romance that earned a B grade from Redheadedgirl late last year:

I think that readers of Megan Frampton and Caroline Linden will like this book and this author. There’s angst, but, like, as a seasoning. The real star of the dish is the well-plotted tension.

In the first novel in Christy Carlyle’s sizzling Duke’s Den series, three men, intent on making a fortune, discover irresistible opportunities . . .

Nicholas Lyon gambled his way into a fortune and ownership of the most opulent, notorious gentlemen’s club in England. But when Nick’s cruel brother dies, he inherits a title he never wanted. The sooner Nick is rid of the estate that has always haunted him, the sooner he can return to the life he’s built in London. But there’s one obstacle—the exquisite Thomasina Thorne.

When the new heir to the Tremayne dukedom suddenly appears in Mina Thorne’s life, she’s flustered. Not only is he breathtakingly handsome, but he’s also determined to take away her home and position as steward of the Enderley estate. If Mina learns what makes the enigmatic duke tick, perhaps she can change his mind—as long as she doesn’t get too close to him.

With each day Nick spends with Mina, his resolve weakens as their colliding wills lead to explosive desire. Could she be the one woman who can help him finally bury the ghosts of his past?

  • Wonder Woman: Warbringer

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo is $1.99! This is part of the DC Icons series, and the Batman and Catwoman installments are also on sale! Carrie read this one and gave it a B:

This book is serviceable but in terms of female bonding, a diverse group of characters, and an excellent portrayal of Diana, the book is a solid B at least. It should work as an introduction to the character for newcomers or as a fun alternative take on events for long-time comics readers.

She will become one of the world’s greatest heroes: WONDER WOMAN. But first she is Diana, Princess of the Amazons. And her fight is just beginning. . . .

Diana longs to prove herself to her legendary warrior sisters. But when the opportunity finally comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law—risking exile—to save a mere mortal. Even worse, Alia Keralis is no ordinary girl and with this single brave act, Diana may have doomed the world.

Alia just wanted to escape her overprotective brother with a semester at sea. She doesn’t know she is being hunted. When a bomb detonates aboard her ship, Alia is rescued by a mysterious girl of extraordinary strength and forced to confront a horrible truth: Alia is a Warbringer—a direct descendant of the infamous Helen of Troy, fated to bring about an age of bloodshed and misery.

Together, Diana and Alia will face an army of enemies—mortal and divine—determined to either destroy or possess the Warbringer. If they have any hope of saving both their worlds, they will have to stand side by side against the tide of war. (less)

  • The Enforcer

    The Enforcer by HelenKay Dimon

The Enforcer by HelenKay Dimon is 99c! This romantic suspense has an enemies to lovers trope. Readers really liked the heroine and how much she had to overcome. However, some fans of the series felt the previous book was better.

Security expert Matthias Clarke hunts down people who don’t want to be found. His latest prey: the sole survivor of a massacre that killed his brother years ago. Kayla Roy claimed she was a victim of the carnage. Then she disappeared. Matthias thinks Kayla may have actually been the killer—and he wants justice.

Kayla Roy never stays in one place too long and never lets a man get too close. But keeping Matthias at arm’s length may be impossible. Dark and enigmatic, Matthias draws Kayla in from the start. She knows nothing about his connection to her dark past, or his thirst for vengeance. She only knows their attraction feels overpowering—and very dangerous.

Matthias’s suspicions about the sensual Kayla clash with his instinct to protect her, especially when he realizes her life is in danger. But Kayla’s not looking for a savior—especially one who seems hell-bent on tempting her down a lethal path.

  • Paris Letters

    Paris Letters by Janice MacLeod

RECOMMENDED: Paris Letters by Janice MacLeod is $2.51 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is a nonfiction account of MacLeod’s question to herself after a bad day: “How much does it take to quit your job?” Sarah lists this one as pat of her favorite comfort re-reads.

“How much money does it take to change your life?”

Unfulfilled at her job and unsuccessful in the dating department, Janice MacLeod doodled this question at her desk. Then she decided to make it a challenge.

Over the next few months, with a little math and a lot of determination, she saved up enough to buy two years of freedom in Europe.

But she had only been in Paris for a few days when she met a handsome butcher (with a striking resemblance to Daniel Craig)—and never went home again.

A love story in the vein of Almost French and Lunch in Paris, Paris Letters (February 4) is a joyful romp through the City of Light, and an inspiring look at what can happen when we dare to create the life we want.

Realizing that her Parisian love affair would be forever, MacLeod began her own business on Etsy, creating beautifully-illustrated letters from Paris inspired by artists like Percy Kelly and Beatrix Potter. She now paints and writes full-time, bringing beautiful things to subscribers around the world and reviving the lost art of letter-writing.

  1. GraceElizabeth says:

I’m a little bit hungover and began to read ‘duke’ as ‘duck’ in that first summary… I did wonder why Mina needed to “learn what makes the enigmatic duck tick”.

  2. Amanda says:

@GraceElizabeth: It’s so weird you say that, because I mistyped the title with “duck” about three times while writing this post. And then I started going through Duke titles I have shelved and switching the world for Duck.

  3. Kareni says:

    I too enjoyed Paris Letters.

  4. Ren Benton says:

I once had a blog on which I made the case that a duck would be a superior romantic hero in head-to-head competition against most romance novel dukes. Granted, he was a very woke duck, but there’s no reason to default to “irredeemable asshole” when creating fictional characters.

  5. Julia says:

I would tend to concur, were it not for the fact that whatever their shortcomings as romantic heroes, at least dukes aren’t eqipped with enormous spiral-shaped wedding tackle.

  6. Ren Benton says:

@Julia: I recently had a job interview at my local sex toy emporium, which carries a great deal of merchandise that suggests a spring-loaded corkscrew wangdoodle would be an asset, not a liability. Plus, since the duke and duck are no doubt vying for the favor of a virgin who has no preconceived notions about male reproductive organs, her reaction to the unveiling should be exactly the same “WTF is that goofy looking thing?”

Presuming we make him a duck man from outer space (it’s fiction—we can do whatever we want!) to get around the obvious moral/legal issues of human-duck intimacy, I still think the duck wins this category.
