Cover Awe: Magic, Sleepy Smiles, & More

Ready to look at some beautiful book covers? I know I am!

Enchantee by Gita Trelease. The cover has the French flag. Top third is red, middle is white, and bottom third is blue. The white strip is covering a woman's eyes. She has deep red hair and red lips, with a beauty mark on her cheek. It a very magical, French Revolution inspired cover.

Amanda: Les Mis. Magic. Revolution. I really want to see this cover in the flesh? In the paper?

Elyse: Oh that’s beautiful.

Sarah: I look at all the layers and imagery and references in that one cover and think about the talent and design skill that went into it and I’m really just in awe.

He's Not My Boyfriend by Jackie Lau. An Asian couple are snuggling in a cozy bed and sleepily smiling at one another.

Elyse: I love covers with snuggling. Snuggling is vastly under appreciated.

Amanda: I love the hero’s sleepy sweet smile.

Sarah: I love so many of the composition elements: matching shirts, sleepy cuddling, and clear comfort in intimacy and wow I like it.

The Witches Are Coming by Lindy West. The cover is mostly black, but the title starts at a yellow and has a gradient to orange and then red. The gradient also follows through in a dust particle, splattering design toward the edge of the cover.

Amanda: I love the color gradient to this one and “magical” splatter effect.

Elyse: I love ombré effects in my knitting and on my books.

Sarah: Wow. Sometimes text and color alone can be so powerful, like how this hints at the colors of a flame and the sparks of a fire. Are the burnt witches coming out of the fire? I have so many questions brought up by colors and words. Nice.

Amanda: Yes! Sparks from a fire! That’s exactly what it reminds me of, though I couldn’t place it.

The Rogue of Fifth Avenue by Joanna Shupe. The background is a cobblestone street in blue hues with a golden lantern. The hero and heroine are front and center. The heroine is in a blue gown while the hero embraces her from behind. He's in a burgundy coat and looks quite dashing.

Sarah: That artist and that designer are holy crap talented. So are the models. That is stunning.

Amanda: I really love Shupe’s covers for Avon.

The hero in this one was such a charming secondary character in A Notorious Vow.

Elyse: For me, this cover conveys a sweetness and intimacy that I really like.

Regarding Enchantee, I have an ARC under my workstation. It IS lovely in person. My copy is paperback, and I can only assume that a glossy hardcover jacket will only heighten its beauty.

I agree, I really like snuggling on my romance covers. I like tension in a romance, but I like the covers to have a sense of the softness and intimacy between a couple in private moments.

I also like the snuggling–even though there is good sexy times in the book, the cover conveys that they actually like each other (which they do!)

The Shupe book is lovely! Monochromatic with the slight pop of burgundy. I like that it does not have the obligatory bared leg/back or hyper extended back in the moment of lust (those women must do a lot of yoga!) I have enjoyed reading the series as well.

F YEAH LINDY WEST!! If anyone has yet to read ‘Shrill: Notes From A Loud Woman’, I HIGHLY recommend it.

Enchantee was named one of Amazon’s Best Books of February so hopefully the beauty of the cover matches the contents!
