  • Silent in the Grave

Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn

RECOMMENDED: Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn is $1.99! This book and series has been mentioned quite a bit on the site. Elyse recommended it if you like historical mysteries. Reader StacieH4 mentioned it for those who prefer their romance light on sex, and Reader Tina Chaney said on a podcast that the book has one of her favorite opening lines. Have you read it?

“Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.”

These ominous words, slashed from the pages of a book of Psalms, are the last threat that the darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests.

Prepared to accept that Edward’s death was due to a long-standing physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers the damning paper for herself, and realizes the truth.

Determined to bring her husband’s murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward’s demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

  • The Lady Who Came in from the Cold

The Lady Who Came in from the Cold by Grace Callaway

The Lady Who Came in from the Cold by Grace Callaway is 99c at Amazon! And I hope she comes in from the cold soon, because she’s about to be topless in that snow. Readers loved how emotional and tender this romance was. However, others wished the husband wasn’t such a jerk.

    A Wife Disgraced
A spy during the Napoleonic Wars, Lady Pandora Blackwood gave up espionage for love. She has shared everything with her husband… except the truth of her past. Twelve joyous years and three children later, her dark history rises to threaten everything she holds dear. Now she must face her greatest fear: can her husband love her for who she really is?

    A Husband Wronged
Former officer Marcus Harrington, the Marquess of Blackwood, didn’t believe in love until he met his beautiful Penny. His devoted marchioness by day and his sensual wanton by night, she’s everything he’s ever wanted… until her betrayal shatters him. When his world comes crashing down, he is left to question: was their perfect marriage real or just a dream?

    ’Tis the Season for Miracles
As a cold winter grips Regency London, the estranged lovers come together in a heated reunion. Sizzling passion paves the way toward forgiveness, yet buried secrets and hidden enemies block the road to redemption. This Christmas, a wife will stop at nothing to win her beloved back… and a husband will discover that love’s reality exceeds his wildest dreams.

  • Giving Chase

    Giving Chase by Lauren Dane

Giving Chase by Lauren Dane is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a small town romance with a hint of a suspense. I’m also on the fence on whether or not to categorize this as an erotic romance. If this book seems familiar, it was previously published back in 2006, but has since been updated and re-released.

Previously published; newly refreshed by author

The Chase boys. Ridiculously hot and notoriously single.

When landscaper Kyle Chase takes notice of Maggie Wright, all of Petal, Georgia, wonders what the quiet schoolteacher is hiding underneath her tight bun and boring blouses. Even Maggie doesn’t quite get it, but after a failed relationship and a disastrous attempt to get back out there, she’s no match against the famous Chase charm, and Kyle has it in spades.

Kyle wants Maggie in his life—and in his bed—and he doesn’t mind getting down and dirty to prove it. For years he’s avoided the kind of trouble that comes with “good girls” like her, but Maggie’s the best trouble he’s ever been in. He craves more of it. And more of her.

But even as their love grows into thoughts of forever, a hidden danger from Maggie’s past threatens to tear them apart. And when Maggie suddenly disappears, Kyle must put his faith in his family and race to save the love of his life before he loses her forever.

The Chase is on. One small town. Four hot brothers. And enough heat to burn up anyone who dares to get close. Don’t miss the next books: Taking ChaseChased and Making Chase.

  • Hidden Impact

    Hidden Impact by Piper Drake

RECOMMENDED: Hidden Impact by Piper J. Drake is $1.99! Not only should you check out Elyse’s previous review, but here’s what she had to say:

The first book in the Safeguard series is everything I like in romantic suspense–over-the-top heroes, international espionage, things blowing up, but no real threat of violence (physical or sexual) to the main characters. It’s popcorn action movie suspense, lots of fun but no real darkness. Plus the heroine is a chef and OMG this book will make you hungry.

    He’s not the hero she’s looking for…

As part of the elite Centurion Corporation team, military-veteran-turned-mercenary Gabriel Diaz is a natural defender. He’ll do anything to ensure a mission is successful. Anything but get emotionally invested—he learned the hard way that can be deadly. Easy bodyguard jobs in between the more challenging missions are all he’s interested in now.

Maylin Cheng is desperate and running out of time. Her younger sister has gone missing but no one seems to take her concern seriously. Her last hope lies in asking an aloof bodyguard for help. He dismisses her outright, but all that changes when she is almost killed in a not-so-accidental hit-and-run right before his eyes.

As Maylin leans on Gabriel, she begins to rely on him for more than just her safety. But as their attraction grows, so does the danger surrounding them. When the elaborate web they’re trapped in unravels, Gabriel will do anything to protect them. Even if that means putting his heart in the crosshairs.

Did I miss which of these books contains shifters? Not that it matters but…wondering if I need to fix another pot of coffee to make the brain work.

  2. Amanda says:

@Silver James: Whoops! Forgot to change the title. There was going to be a shifter romance until I realized it was only 60 pages.

  3. Silver James says:

Whew! I never know if it’s actually me. I’m relieved it wasn’t today. 😉 LOLOL Thanks, Amanda! Carry on. 😀

  4. Vicki says:

I enjoyed Silent in the Grave, would recommend it. A woman pushing against societal restrictions to solve her husband’s murder, yep, some of my catnip.

  5. Karin says:

I admit to having gotten hooked on the Grace Callaway books. Forget the plausibility of the story, it’s pure escapism. Yes, the husband is a jerk, and the wife was keeping major secrets from him, but I enjoyed that they were a mature couple with several children yet still hadn’t lost their sizzle in the bedroom. This is a middle book in the series, but it works as a standalone read.

  6. Beck says:

The lady and gentleman on the cover of the Grace Callaway book better come in from the cold before they both lose their nips to frostbite. Yikes!

  7. LauraD says:

I remembered the Chase Bros. series from what, a decade ago, and thought I’d buy Giving Chase as a nostalgia re-read. I recalled it being a little over the top, but dang it has not aged well.

The “nice girl” vs “slutty girl” is out of control. If you do a shot every time you read the word “slut”, you’ll be dead of alcohol poisoning before the end of chapter 2. Let’s get it straight, our heroine Maggie, is super nice. She teaches history, bakes for the old folks home, and wears baggy clothes. She worries every day about being perceived as a “slut” or “whore”. The slutty women try to “steal” her dates, buy their pies at Kroger’s and *gasp* sometimes don’t wear bras.

All the Chase brothers are teeth grindingly perfect, except for the oldest who has Reasons and Issues. Maggie’s mother and sister are eeeeevil. I did enjoy the brother’s parents, they came across as human.

The book is set in the south, but there isn’t a single POC. At one point they get a warrant from a judge for a cabin that is 2 hours away by vehicle. That guy has a big jurisdiction.

I could go on. Lauren Dane has actually written some pretty awesome books with sexually active and confident heroines who bust the balls of men who try to judge them. She’s definitely grown as a writer. I’m actually surprised she’s decided to re-release these books without some pretty major re-writing. I’ll be passing on the rest of the brothers Chase.
