  • The Suffragette Scandal

The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan

RECOMMENDED: The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan is 99c. Pretty much anyone I’ve heard talk about Milan’s books says, “Just read them all, trust me.” I concur.

Redheadedgirl and Carrie did a joint review of this title and they gave it an A:

Both Redheadedgirl and I give this book ALL THE A’s.  We laughed, we cried, we were inspired and frustrated.

I may have swooned a little.

Redheadedgirl spent her Friday emailing the other Smart Bitches reviewers and telling us “HURRY UP AND READ THE BOOK I NEED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT”.

    An idealistic suffragette…

Miss Frederica “Free” Marshall has put her heart and soul into her newspaper, known for its outspoken support of women’s rights. Naturally, her enemies are intent on destroying her business and silencing her for good. Free refuses to be at the end of her rope…but she needs more rope, and she needs it now.

    …a jaded scoundrel…

Edward Clark’s aristocratic family abandoned him to die in a war-torn land, so he survived the only way he could: by becoming a rogue and a first-class forger. When the same family that left him for dead vows to ruin Miss Marshall, he offers his help. So what if he has to lie to her? She’s only a pawn to use in his revenge.

…and a scandal seven years in the making.

But the irrepressible Miss Marshall soon enchants Edward. By the time he realizes that his cynical heart is hers, it’s too late. The only way to thwart her enemies is to reveal his scandalous past…and once the woman he loves realizes how much he’s lied to her, he’ll lose her forever.

  • Intermediate Thermodynamics

    Intermediate Thermodynamics by Susannah Nix

Intermediate Thermodynamics by Susannah Nix is 99c at Amazon and Kobo! This is the second book in the Chemistry Lessons series and the first book is free! Carrie gave this book a B:

Obviously, I spent a lot of this book wanting to knock people’s heads together, but I identified with a lot of it too because the emotions are so vividly and often painfully portrayed.

Aerospace engineer Esther Abbott doesn’t believe in love, but she’s perfectly happy hating her screenwriter neighbor, Jonathan. Until she’s forced to make a devil’s bargain with him: if he distracts her best friend from a mouth-breather ex, Esther will be his science advisor for the sci-fi script he’s writing.

Her patience is put to the test when it’s time to fulfill her end of the deal. But the more time she spends with her nemesis, the more hate turns into attraction—and attraction into something much deeper. As Esther’s carefully-constructed defenses start to crumble, will love be her undoing or her salvation?

Intermediate Thermodynamics follows in the tradition of contemporary romantic comedy favorites like Penny Reid, Sally Thorne, and Jennifer Crusie. This sweet, enemies-to-lovers romance is the second in a series of standalone rom-coms featuring geeky heroines who work in STEM fields.

  • A Conspiracy in Belgravia

A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas

RECOMMENDEDA Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas is $1.99! This is the second book in the Lady Sherlock series, and you definitely want to read the first one before this one. Sarah really enjoys this series and gave this book a B+:

I was so absorbed in this novel, I read it in one long, very lovely day, the kind of weekend day where you look back with a sort of awed gratitude that you spent most of the daylight hours reading happily.

The game is afoot as Charlotte Holmes returns in the atmospheric second novel in New York Times bestseller Sherry Thomas’s Victorian-set Lady Sherlock series.

Being shunned by Society gives Charlotte Holmes the time and freedom to put her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. As “Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective,” aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, she’s had great success helping with all manner of inquiries, but she’s not prepared for the new client who arrives at her Upper Baker Street office.

Lady Ingram, wife of Charlotte’s dear friend and benefactor, wants Sherlock Holmes to find her first love, who failed to show up at their annual rendezvous. Matters of loyalty and discretion aside, the case becomes even more personal for Charlotte as the missing man is none other than Myron Finch, her illegitimate half brother.

In the meanwhile, Charlotte wrestles with a surprising proposal of marriage, a mysterious stranger woos her sister Livia, and an unidentified body that surfaces where least expected. Charlotte’s investigative prowess is challenged as never before: Can she find her brother in time—or will he, too, end up as a nameless corpse somewhere in the belly of London?

  • Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is $1.99 at Amazon! This deal may be a leftover Kindle Daily Deal, so grab this while you can. This is the first book in the very popular YA fantasy series, Throne of Glass.  Readers seem to be split on the heroine – some found her pretty kickass, while others thought she was pretty full of herself. Anyone who has read this, please share your thoughts in the comments!

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

  1. Ren Benton says:

Kind of an expensive sale, but KAREN MEMORY by Elizabeth Bear has dropped from $10 to $5.99. Old West steampunk Jack the Ripper, anyone?

  2. Katie Lynn says:

Killjoy by Julie Garwood is $1.99. I believe it’s a KDD? This is the third book in the Buchanan/Renard/FBI series.

  3. On SUFFRAGETTE SCANDAL- since I had previous purchased the physical book through Amazon, this was actually a Kindle MatchBook for me and I got it for free! I went and checked & it looks like this is the case for the entire series (again, if you’ve previously purchased the physical book from Amazon).

Heads up if you’re a weirdo like me who likes to have some books in multiple formats 🙂

  4. Ah, wait… also just noticed that the first book in the Susannah Nix series is free right now! I already had it out from the library because of a SBTB Instastory Rec Wednesday… so yay! Now I have the first 2 books for a grand total of $1! Actually, I just got 6 books from this post for $1… this is the nicest on my wallet “Books on Sale” has been for a while

  5. Liz says:

If you like historical mysteries like the Sherry Thomas one, A TALE OF TWO MURDERS by Heather Redmond is on sale for $2.99 as well! It has a young Charles Dickens in it.

  6. Bem says:

I love that Throne of Glass included a scene where the heroine is on her period, and has cramps. It’s not something you read in a lot of books (at least not in non-romance).

  7. Leigh Kramer says:

I loved Intermediate Thermodynamics! You cannot go wrong with Susannah Nix novels!

  8. Lara says:

I’m one who didn’t like the heroine in Throne of Glass. For someone who was so experienced, she was not observant and had no concept of strategy. She blundered around bragging, and I wondered how she managed to do any recon since she was oblivious to so much going on around her. Needless to say, I was too disgusted to continue with the series.

  9. Mary says:

I love the Throne of Glass series but I can see where people think the protagonist is both badass and full of herself. She’s only 18 and has accomplished a lot, but she’s still 18. I liked what @Bem said too about the scene with her period, it was realistic and not just shoehorned in either. Something I like about Maas books too is that there’s romance but (spoiler) the woman doesn’t always end up marrying the first guy she has heart/pants feelings for.

  10. Hypatia says:

@Mara – thank you fo the heads up re: Nix! I haven’t read this author and now I get to read 2 of her books for a dollar!

  11. Sophie M says:

I read all of the Throne of Glass books and adored them. I will say that the first book is my least favorite. Celaena is a character who grows a lot over the course of the series, and as her backstory reveals itself, the reasons for her swagger become more apparent. The prequel novel also helps to deepen her character more.

  12. Tam says:

I really tried with the Throne of Glass books, but the heroine is the worst of Mary Sues. I think I stopped reading when the series started hinting that she was long-lost fairy princess or something as well as a brilliant killer and a irresistible beauty. Good grief.

  13. Kelly Wilkinson says:

I could not finish throne of glass ue to the lead but I absolutely loved the court series which I read first

  14. Sophie M says:

Throne of Glass is, I think preferred by more younger readers- some of the less mature behavior is tolerated better by a YA audience. The court series is definitely more New Adult, with the requisite maturity difference. One thing I think Maas handles well is the discussion of trauma and how it alters a person.

  15. Amy Dietz says:

I preferred Maas’s Court series as well. Due to all the points made in earlier posts. But as the Court series has moved onto the heroine’s sisters, I’ve enjoyed the story less. The sisters weren’t very nice in the first book. They haven’t redeemed themselves sufficiently for the focus to shift to them.
