  • The Highlander’s Princess Bride

The Highlander’s Princess Bride by Vanessa Kelly

The Highlander’s Princess Bride by Vanessa Kelly is $1.99! This is the third book in the Improper Princesses series and can be read as a standalone. Some readers noticed this book is inspired by Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, if that’s your jam. Others mentioned that the book is rather long and can feel like it at times.

In Vanessa Kelly’s enchanting series, three young women descended from royalty overcome their scandalous beginnings to win the hearts of the ton’s most eligible men . . .

The illegitimate daughter of the Prince Regent might be expected to pursue various dubious professions. Actress, perhaps, or artist’s model. Even courtesan. Victoria Knight, however, has become a governess—a respectable choice, until she travels to Scotland to meet her new charges. The younger brothers of Nicholas Kendrick, Earl of Arnprior, aren’t children at all. They’re brawny, wild Highland men. As for the Earl, he’s handsome, guarded, and far too compelling . . . especially for a woman hiding a dark secret.

Nick needs a proper teacher to transform his unmarriageable brothers—and a sensible,
straight-laced wife for himself. Miss Knight seems to fit the bill on both counts. But he soon discovers there is more to Victoria than he thought. It’s not just her notorious origins, or the danger that’s followed her all the way to Scotland. It’s the fiery loyalty beneath that sedate façade. This, the real Victoria, is the woman Nick is starting to desire so desperately. And what an earl wants, he’ll use every seductive means to get . . .

  • Absolute Trust

Absolute Trust by Piper J. Drake

Absolute Trust by Piper J. Drake is $2.99! This romantic suspense series features heroes with dog companions. Drake also writes some serious competence porn. Some readers felt the ending seemed rather unresolved, while others said this was a rather sweet romantic suspense.

LOVE IS THE GREATEST RISK OF ALL
After multiple tours of duty, Brandon Forte returns to his hometown on a personal mission: to open a facility for military service dogs like Haydn, a German shepherd who’s seen his share of combat and loss. It also brings him back to Sophie Kim, a beacon of light in his life . . . and the one woman he can’t have. But Forte’s success means he’s made enemies in high places. Enemies who are now after Sophie . . .

When Forte enlisted and left without saying goodbye, Sophie did her best to move on. But with her first love back in town, looking sexier than ever, she’s constantly reminded of what they could have had. Then after he risks himself for her, Sophie realizes she’ll have to put her life in the hands of the man who broke her heart, knowing the danger -and the sparks between them- could consume them both.

  • A Lady in the Smoke

A Lady in the Smoke by Karen Odden

A Lady in the Smoke by Karen Odden is $1.99! This is billed as Victorian mystery and I believe it’s Odden’s debut novel. Readers say it has an awesome blend of everything: mystery, drama, romance. However, some felt the relationships between characters eclipsed the mystery. It has a 3.9-star average on Goodreads.

Karen Odden’s enthralling debut historical mystery transports readers to Victorian England, where a terrifying railway disaster plunges a headstrong young noblewoman into a conspiracy that reaches to the highest corridors of power.

Following a humiliating fourth Season in London, Lady Elizabeth Fraser is on her way back to her ancestral country estate when her train careens off the rails and bursts into flames. Though she is injured, she manages to drag herself and her unconscious mother out of the wreckage, and amid the chaos that ensues, a brilliant young railway surgeon saves her mother’s life. Elizabeth feels an immediate connection with Paul Wilcox—though society would never deem a medical man eligible for the daughter of an earl.

After Paul reveals that the train wreck was no accident, and the inspector who tried to prevent it dies under mysterious circumstances, Elizabeth undertakes a dangerous investigation of her own that leads back to her family’s buried secrets. The more she learns, the more she must risk. Not only are her dowry and her reputation at stake; Paul’s very life hangs in the balance when he is arrested for manslaughter. As the trial draws near, and Parliament prepares for a vote that will change the course of the nation, Elizabeth uncovers a conspiracy that has been years in the making. But time is running out for her to see justice done.

  • A Race to Splendor

A Race to Splendor by Ciji Ware

A Race to Splendor by Ciji Ware is $2.99! This seems like historical fiction with romantic elements, but I could be wrong. Let me know if you’ve read this one. Readers say you can definitely tell the book was well-researched, but that sometimes the amount of background and historical facts dragged down the action.

Early in 1906, the ground in San Francisco shook buildings and lives from their comfortable foundations.

Amidst rubble, corruption, and deceit, two women-young architects in a city and field ruled by men-find themselves racing the clock and each other during the rebuilding of competing hotels in the City by the Bay.

Based on meticulous research, A Race to Splendor tells the story of the audacious people of one of the world’s great cities rebuilding and reinventing themselves after immense human tragedy. Filled with courage, passion, and conflict, Amelia Bradshaw’s spirit will capture your imagination as she strives to redraft her life amidst the ruins with both help and hindrance from a wayward son of privilege who pulls her into worlds she’d never have known.

  1. A Race to Splendor was awesome. I read it about 3 years ago when I was looking for books set in the Bay Area. The cover copy may make it seem like this is more historical fiction than it is historical romance, but that’s far from the truth. The two women mentioned are the heroine, Amelia, and Julia Morgan, architect of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, but there isn’t really a competition between the two. Amelia works for Morgan’s firm for the first part of the book, but then breaks off on her own to rebuild her family’s former hotel (her father bet it in a poker game with the hero). J.D., the hero, was a bit of a jerk in the beginning, but I really enjoyed his arc and watching him change throughout the book (the action takes place over the course of a year, so the change was natural).

There are a few crazy parts to the book, but it was really well researched and I enjoyed the unexpected ending. The description of the earthquake and fire was outstanding. I’ve never experienced an earthquake, but having lived through Hurricane Sandy, I felt that the emotions displayed by the characters in the aftermath were on point.

  2. ReneeG says:

Really enjoyed Piper J. Drake’s True Hero’s trilogy, of which “Absolute Trust” is book 3. Loved the dogs, who also were heroes in the story.

  3. Msb says:

The best Victorian mysteries I’ve read recently are Sherry Thomas’ books about “Charlotte Holmes”. Third is out this year, can’t wait!

  4. Georgina says:

I enjoyed A Lady in the Smoke, mostly for the historical verisimilitude. The author appears to have done a lot of research into the establishment of Victorian train networks and that was fascinating. I had no idea there were specific railway doctors, for example, and that they were looked down upon as being less skilled/prestigious than regular doctors.

The story does move very slowly, and the feelings between the heroine and hero didn’t quite gel for me. So I can’t really recommend it as a romance, but if you’re into historical fiction it’s worth a look.

  5. Lexica says:

I picked up Race to Splendor based on this and am enjoying it. It kind of reminds me of Gwen Bristow (I’ll probably always feel fond of Jubilee Trail) but without the occasional grotesque racist attitudes. Plucky heroine, California history, with awareness of social justice. Nice.
