A Summer for Scandal

A Summer for Scandal by Lydia San Andres is $1.99! This is a historical romance set in the Caribbean with a heroine hiding her writing identity. One promising review said the feeling between the hero and heroine is very much like Mr. Darcy and Lizzie, but some said the plot execution could have used some work. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.
Arroyo Blanco, 1911.
When Emilia Cruz agreed to accompany her sister to a boating party, she had no idea that the darling of the literary world would be in assistance—or that he would take such pleasure in disparaging the deliciously sinful serial she writes under a pseudonym. No one save her sister knows she’s the author and to be found out would mean certain scandal.
Stuck on his long-awaited second book, Ruben Torres has begun to edit in secret a gossip paper whose literary reviews are as cruel as they are clever. The more he writes about the mysterious author of a popular serial, the more papers he sells…and the more he is determined to find out her identity before anyone else can.

When Seducing a Duke by Kathryn Smith is $1.99! This is the first book in the Victorian Soap Opera series and features a heroine with a major crush on the hero. Readers loved the push and pull aspect of the hero and heroine’s courtship, while some were turned off by the “cursing and vulgar language.” It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.
Enchant. Tempt. Entice. Beguile. Just a few things a woman must do when seducing a duke…

Make It Hurt by Jackie Ashenden is 99c! This is the second book in the Texas Bounty series and features a bounty hunter heroine. If you like high angst romances that are more on the erotic side, Ashenden is worth a read. However, some readers had trouble becoming invested in the characters.
The Texas Bounty series heats up as a female bounty hunter goes toe-to-toe with the tantalizing biker who never stopped loving her.
Nora Sutcliffe enjoys having tough guys at her mercy—preferably in handcuffs. The best fugitive recovery agent in the business, Nora always gets her man. But when her latest pursuit leads her to a notorious biker hangout, she’s reunited with “Smith”: the one man who was too hot for Nora to handle. Once upon a time, she was a rich girl and he was a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Now she needs his help, and she’ll do whatever it takes to get it.
Eight years ago, Smith let a pretty little Texas debutante break his heart. He picked up the pieces, went to hell and back with the army, then rode out of the darkness with a gang of outlaws at his back. The last thing he needs is a blast from the past like Nora, who has reinvented herself as a gun-toting badass with the stones to challenge him in front of the whole club. But if she thinks Smith will give up one of his brothers for a single night of pleasure, she’s in for a rude awakening.

Throne of Oak by Dana Marie Bell is $2.99! This is a paranormal romance with fated mates between a vampire and a dryad. Some readers found the plot a little disjointed and uneven, while others loved the hero and how earnest he was. I should also mention the vampire hero is a mayor, so there’s that. The first book is also available for less than $2!
Vampire Dragos Ibanescu, Mayor of Maggie’s Grove, is about to lose his mind. His mate, the dryad queen Mina Chainey, refuses to have anything to do with him after her ordeal at the hands of an evil witch. If he doesn’t mate with her soon, he may lose control of the beast within him—a force far more dangerous than anyone in town knows…
Mina’s nightmares of her time with the witch haunt her. The Queen of the Forest can’t muster the strength needed to fight her terror. Unable to leave the Throne, she vows she will not accept Dragos until she can stand at his side as an equal. But the nightmares are only growing in strength, and soon she realizes that there’s more to her pain than simple fear.
Dark forces are converging on Maggie’s Grove, and a horde of hunters stalk supernaturals from the shadows. Only by uniting in body and mind will Mina and Dragos find the strength to defend their home.

Oh noes! Not cursing and vulgar language!
Let’s get that audiobook narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. takemymoney.gif

Hold up–if he doesn’t get to bang his traumatized partner, he’ll lose control and turn into a ravenous beast?
Girl, no. Buffy Summers would like a word.
Just have to say I really enjoy Dana Marie Bell, she has a wonderful sense of humour! The first book in this series, Blood of the Maple, has a vampire hero who is cursed to be vegetarian. I found it hilarious.
However the blurb makes it sound: I’ll admit I am not as sensitive as some, but I am more sensitive than others, and I don’t remember having any problems with this book. YMMV of course, but the heroine’s traumatic event was not sexual if that helps. The blurb is more of a shout out to the hints in the earlier books of the series that the vampire mayor is not only a vampire.
In my opinion, the major emotional conflict of the book is that the heroine is refusing any external help to deal with the trauma, which she needs, and that’s a major part of what the hero faces. Here is this person you love, who you can clearly see needs help, and part of their response is to just completely shut out not only you, but everyone else too. What do you do?
This is weird. I read “romance between a vampire and a dryad” and was all for it. And then there was “dryad queen” and “if he doesn’t mate with her, his inner beast will show up” and “The queen is unable to leave the Throne” and then I was pissed off.
So he HAS to mate with her because his inner struggles. And she, a queen, is in the wrong for needing time to deal with her inner struggles? While holding her throne?
I’ve read this blurb before, many times. Like it less each time.
Thank you Storyphile for going into more depth, for the book you describe does prick my interest. But that blurb should die in a fire.
I honestly never read the blurb for Throne of Oak before, it was insta-buy for me because I was already invested in the series. I can see how the blurb wording is problematic. I don’t get to reread as much now that I have kids, so I hope I’m not glossing over things because of poor memory or just being more insensitive than I thought I was.
But I have to recommend the first one just based on the humour of it – it always makes me smile to read about a vampire cursed to drink maple syrup smoothies.
I’m hoping that the discount of one of Jackie Ashenden’s Texas Bounty books means that another book in the series is forthcoming. At one point, Jackie’s website was indicating that there would be six books in the series; so far there have been three published—and there’s a secondary couple in those three books whose story I can’t wait to read. I love Ashenden and find her “template” as soothing and comforting in its own way as Mary Balogh’s template is.
