Warrior

RECOMMENDED: Warrior by Zoe Archer is $1.99! This is the first book in the Blades of the Rose series and I devoured these books. This one was adventurous and fun, plus had a bit of a gruff hero. However, I’m unsure about how well these have held up in the last eight years.
To most people, the realm of magic is the stuff of nursery rhymes and dusty libraries. But for Capt. Gabriel Huntley, it’s become quite real and quite dangerous…
IN HOT PURSUIT…
The vicious attack Capt. Gabriel Huntley witnesses in a dark alley sparks a chain of events that will take him to the ends of the Earth and beyond—where what is real and what is imagined become terribly confused. And frankly, Huntley couldn’t be more pleased. Intrigue, danger, and a beautiful woman in distress—just what he needs.IN HOTTER WATER…
Raised thousands of miles from England, Thalia Burgess is no typical Victorian lady. A good thing, because a proper lady would have no hope of recovering the priceless magical artifact Thalia is after. Huntley’s assistance might come in handy, though she has to keep him in the dark. But this distractingly handsome soldier isn’t easy to deceive…Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Soul Scorched by Donna Grant is $2.99! This is the sixth book in the Dark Kings series and is a paranormal romance with dragons! Some readers didn’t feel the chemistry between the hero and heroine. However, I know several people who love this series. I’m still salty that my local library doesn’t seem to have book one in paperback.
Darcy was floating on a cloud of pure passion. Everywhere he touched, Warrick was leaving a mark on her, forever changing her. She could feel it through her skin and muscle, through bone and into her soul. It was as if he was changing her. And she welcomed it…
Her power is a blessing.
Born on the Isle of Skye, Darcy is a beautiful woman of many gifts. Fortune-telling is her forte, and she remains the only Druid who could unlock the secrets—and desires—of a Dragon King. His name is Warrick. And now that Darcy’s seen into his dragon heart, nothing will ever be the same…
His passion is a curse.
Warrick never intended to put Darcy in harm’s way. But ever since she revealed a shocking truth, Darcy has been hunted by the Dark Fae, who want to use her powers for their own evil purposes. Now it’s up to Warrick to do whatever it takes to keep the woman who sets his soul on fire safe. But protecting Darcy means putting himself—and his entire race—in jeopardy. Is his desperate longing for one woman worth the risk of losing everything… for eternity?

Song of Scarabaeus by Sara Creasy is $1.99! I thought for sure we had featured this book in some capacity before, but I couldn’t find anything. This is a scifi romance with a literal forced proximity element. If the heroine gets too far from the hero, he’ll die. Some readers don’t think this is a full on romance, but more of a scifi novel with romantic elements.
Trained since childhood in advanced biocyph seed technology by the all-powerful Crib empire, Edie’s mission is to terraform alien worlds while her masters bleed the outlawed Fringe populations dry. When renegade mercenaries kidnap Edie, she’s not entirely sure it’s a bad thing . . . until they leash her to a bodyguard, Finn—a former freedom fighter-turned-slave, beaten down but never broken. If Edie strays from Finn’s side, he dies. If she doesn’t cooperate, the pirates will kill them both.
But Edie’s abilities far surpass anything her enemies imagine. And now, with Finn as her only ally as the merciless Crib closes in, she’ll have to prove it or die on the site of her only failure . . . a world called Scarabaeus.

Heart of Malice by Lisa Edmonds is 99c at Amazon! This is an urban fantasy novel that may appeal to the Bitchery. Readers really loved the badass heroine and thought this was a great “new to them” author, and there is a romantic thread. But there are lots of questions posed and very few answers, if that sort of thing drives you bonkers.
The first time Moses Murphy’s granddaughter killed on his orders, she was six years old.
For twenty years, she was a prisoner of an organized crime syndicate, forced to use her magic to make Moses the most powerful and feared man on the East Coast. To escape his cruelty, she faked her own death and started a new life as Alice Worth. As a private investigator specializing in cases involving the supernatural, Alice walks a precarious line between atoning for the sins of her grandfather’s cabal and keeping her true identity hidden.
Hired to investigate the disappearance of a mysterious object of power, Alice enlists the help of Malcolm, a ghost running from a past as nightmarish as her own. It soon becomes clear the missing object was taken by someone with a dangerous secret and an unknown agenda. When her client is kidnapped, Alice must find her and the object of power before a vengeful killer destroys the city and slaughters thousands—starting with Alice.

I love Sara Creasy’s books and she mentioned on Twitter that she is reviewing her “final manuscript”. Very excited!
(I guess I should have noted, she hasn’t published anything new in several years)
Maybe I’ve been overindulging in Cover Snark stuff, but I really liked that the covers have real people in refreshingly normal poses (that don’t break your spine) and proper clothing.
Except for “Soul Scorched”, but as that it a gender-flipped T&A pose, it also breaks ground.
Courtly Pleasures by Erin Kane Spock is $0.99. I think this book has been recommended on this site!
@Minerva, you beat me to it! @Redheadedgirl gave it an A!
Also, A Daring Arrangement by Joanna Shupe is $1.99 at Amazon.
@Minerva and @Nerdalisque- Thank you!! Courtly Pleasures is on my wish list after the awesome review here. One clicking away now
Another recommendation for Sara Creasy and the Song of Scarabaeus. I enjoyed it and the sequel. However it is more a space adventure than romance.
Cover snark must be affecting me too, or maybe it’s the up-coming holidays. I saw the cover for Soul Scorched and thought someone had melted a bunch of Andes chocolates in a torso-shaped mold. Wouldn’t that be great in someone’s adult Easter basket? Then I saw that no, somebody had just dumped the green lager over three quarters of the post.
Thank you, Amanda, for using the word “salty” here–I have not managed to figure out how kids these days use that term and it makes me feel old and un-hip (I like to use the word hip to make my kids cringe), so I can use all the examples I can get of how to deploy it correctly.
I’ve had The Warrior on my TBR pile forever. But I’m fascinated–@Amanda
‘why wouldn’t have held up over the last 8 years?
Hero a bit of a bully?
I definitely recommend Warrior and the rest of that series! Great action-adventure romance, and the last two books in the quartet both have POC main characters. If you like The Mummy, or Indiana Jones, but wish they had a little bit more romance, you’ll love these.
I liked Song of Scarabaeus and it’s sequel too, though they probably fall more on the “sci-fi with romantic elements” side of the scale, versus full-on SFR. If you like Linnea Sinclair, or the Sirantha Jax series by Ann Aguirre, I’d say you’ll probably like these. Excited to hear that she’s still writing!
Thanks, @Minerva! Just grabbed COURTLY PLEASURES.
Shana Galen’s Third Son’s a Charm is free at Amazon. It is the first in her Survivor’s series; the second was released today and the third is scheduled for sometime this summer.
@Christine: You’re welcome! It basically means you’re being bitter about something.
@Liz: It’s been years since I’ve read it and I’m worried there might be some iffy elements that went over my head before.
Womanist Midrash; a reintroduction to the women of the Torah and the Throne by Wil Gafney is $4.99 on kindle for the next couple days, in honor of Woman’s History Month.
Someone mentioned it in the comments of Sarah’s lovely Bat Mitsvah post. I have not read it but a friend of mine is reading it for Lent and posted the sale. It’s a look at women in the Old Testament from a feminist and womanist perspective. More at the author’s website – wilgafney.com
@Christine – I have trouble with both salty and thirsty!
@ cleo Shoot, I didn’t even know thirsty was a thing!!
@ Amanda Ah, thanks for the clarification–I’m going to stick with bitter!
