I am looking for a contemporary romance. I read the first few pages on my e-reader, but did not write the title or the author down. I don’t remember the date or year, but it was probably two or three years ago.
The book was part of a series about a retreat for military veterans with PTSD. The people who run the retreat have a military background. The retreat might be located on an island, but more the New England kind of island, not the exotic kind.
The book I am looking for started with the heroine standing on a bridge and throwing a ring into the river. I think it was an engagement ring, and a symbol of her starting a new chapter in her life. The hero, who works at the retreat, drives by in his car and thinks she wants to jump. So their first interaction is him tackling her to save her from committing suicide.
This sounds kind of interesting!

Any chance this could be part of the Maya Banks’ “KGI” series, where a bunch of brothers are part of a security slash mercenary company with an isolated compound?
I immediately went to Maya Banks’ series, too, but I don’t recall this scene in any of them. Or at least the ones I read before I got fed up and walked away — or to borrow her favorite verb, ambled.
When I read “military retreat” I think of what Napoleon did when he left Russia, not a place where military personnel go to recover from their experiences.
I seem to recall this plot, but without military personnel. and I KNOW I’ve seen a movie with this scene. But I can’t remember for the life of me what the movie – or the book – was named.
Definitely not Maya Banks (most of her books are based in Tennessee or Houston, and if a character has PTSD, most of the “professional help” side of their recovery is done off-page). Serena Bell has a series (Returning Home) that features such a retreat for veterans with PTSD (in the book “Hold On Tight”), but that particular plot point appeared in only one book as far as I can tell, and from the little I read, I don’t think it involved someone throwing a ring.
Sophie Moss did a trilogy about a Chesapeake Island. This vaguely sounds like “Wind Chime Summer” – the third book in the series. The setting is a little reminiscent of Nora Roberts’ Chesapeake Saga, but the main characters are military. Wind Chime Summer deals with a female veteran heroine who suffers from PTSD and the hero is the local scientist/friend of the owner. Owner is a retiring Navy SEAL.
It’s been a few years since I read it, but any chance it’s “Christmas in Snowflake Canyon” by RaeAnne Thayne? It’s set in Colorado but heroine is a socialite who dumps her cheating fiance. Hero is military vet with injuries and PTSD. They end up developing a mountain retreat for wounded vets and their families.

Wind Chime Summer starts off with the girl driving to the island and mentions crossing the bridge, but no scene with the guy ‘rescuing’ her. Oh well. It’s a good series, nonetheless!
Amy Harmon’s Infinity + 1 starts with a girl on a bridge. I haven’t read it so I don’t know if it matches in the the other stuff, but I remember reading that from the look inside on Amazon
Could it be the Assignment Caribbean Nights series by Kat Cantrell. Not an island in New England but all the men are former military with some significant emotional issues.
If it’s possible that you read the book more recently and that it actually was an excerpt for an upcoming book, I was scrolling on Goodreads and read the description of Lone Rider by Lindsay McKenna and it’s sort of similar? Not a New England island, but some other parts of the description might fit.
This turns out as more of a rec league than an actual habo 😉 So many good books were mentioned, but not one that fits exactly what I remember.
