November is here, and I’m already seeing holiday/Christmas commercials. It’s giving me some major anxiety. On the bright side, I’m basking in all the cute kiddie costume photos that are appearing on Twitter and Facebook.

NaNoWriMo has begun! To everyone participating, GO GO GO! I’m doing my first NaNo this year and I’m trying not to put so much pressure on myself. Romance has felt a recent string of losses lately. Author Miranda Neville passed away last week and Avon Romance posted a touching tribute:
Esi Sogah, her editor for many years said, “I have such a distinct memory of my first encounter with Miranda Neville on the page. I had spent a few hours at home reading a submission before I ran around taking care of errands. When I sat down on the couch later, I racked my brain to remember the title of book I’d been reading earlier–because I’d loved it and wanted to finish. That’s when I remembered I hadn’t been reading a published book, but instead an amazing submission. And as it turned out, the author herself was even more amazing. Working with Miranda was an absolute gift.
There aren’t enough words to describe all of Miranda’s wonderful qualities: witty, kind, wise, hilarious, brilliant, charming, terrifyingly clever. Working with her was a dream; talking to her was a total delight. Miranda has an incredible legacy of which her books are just one piece; I am honored to have been a part of her wonderful career.”
Author Janet Chapman also passed and there was a lovely quote from her posted on her Facebook page:
“The magic is real, people; as real as the sunrise, the ebb and flow of the tides, the haunted call of a loon, that unseen fish tugging on the end of a line, the birth of a baby, the death of a loved one. The problem, in my opinion, is that these things seem so everyday ordinary that we forgot how extraordinary they are.” -Janet Chapman

Combining cute animals and costumes seems fitting. An Orlando animal shelter has been sorting their adoptable dogs into Hogwarts houses to help get them a forever home:
“Our animal behaviorist, Diane Andersen, (and Harry Potter guru), created a test using toys that represent different qualities of each house,” Bardy told The Dodo. “The dogs are tested individually similar to the Sorting Hat process in the novels. In our case, the dog’s choice of toy indicates his house, not the Sorting Hat — but we do have one on hand.”
They also mentioned that their adoptable cats aren’t as receptive to being dressed in House colors.

Do not trust the quiz! I think it’s bespelled. It sorted MaFan into Hufflepuff. She’s got Gryffindor written all over her. Especially the daring and nerve part. We don’t call her trouble for no reason.
I teach 10th grade English, and although we won’t limit it to just Nov, all of my students are writing their own novellas this year. I’m using NaNoWriMo techniques to help support them. I adore reading these and watching teens bloom into amazing authors. Last year, one girl wrote her parents’ teenage love story which she shared with them to show how proud she was to be their daughter.
I just took the quiz for both my dogs – my Dobby was sorted into Hufflepuff and my Tonks was sorted into Gryffindor – I would totally agree on my dog Tonks being a Gryffindor, but my Dobby is for sure a Ravenclaw – he is serious, studious, and waaaaaayyyy too smart for his own good.
@Elizabeth: That’s fantastic! If any of your students turn into a bestselling author, I hope you get a shoutout in their acknowledgements.
