  • The Female of the Species

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

RECOMMENDEDThe Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis is $1.99! All the trigger warnings for this book, by the way. However, I absolutely loved this and I gave it an A:

The Female of the Species was a cathartic read. I was often flushed with anger, crying from sadness, or amped up with girl power. It’s a powerful book and one that I’ll be talking about for a long time to come.

Edgar Award–winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a dark and riveting contemporary YA novel that blends the unflinching honesty of Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak with the relentless pacing and alternating perspectives of Gone Girl. A stunning, unforgettable page-turner.

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it.

Three years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best—the language of violence. While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher’s kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone.

As their senior year unfolds, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

  • Silent in the Grave

Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn

RECOMMENDED: Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn is $1.99! This book and series has been mentioned quite a bit on the site. Elyse recommended it if you like historical mysteries. Reader StacieH4 mentioned it for those who prefer their romance light on sex, and Reader Tina Chaney said on a podcast that the book has one of her favorite opening lines. Have you read it?

“Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.”

These ominous words, slashed from the pages of a book of Psalms, are the last threat that the darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests.

Prepared to accept that Edward’s death was due to a long-standing physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers the damning paper for herself, and realizes the truth.

Determined to bring her husband’s murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward’s demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

  • Midnight Vengeance

Midnight Vengeance by Lisa Marie Rice

Midnight Vengeance by Lisa Marie Rice is $1.99! This is the first book in the Men of Midnight romantic suspense series. It has some interesting blend of catnip: opposites attract, a one night stand, and a Navy SEAL with a crush. Some readers found parts of the writing repetitive, while others loved the hero and his mix of softness and protectiveness.

Morton “Jacko” Jackman isn’t afraid of anything. He’s a former Navy SEAL sniper, and he’s been in more firefights than most people have had hot meals. Lauren Dare scares the crap out of him.

Gorgeous, talented and refined, she’s the type of woman who could never be interested in a roughneck like him. So he’s loved her fiercely in secret, taken her art classes, and kept a watchful but comfortable distance. Until now.

Lauren had finally found a home in Portland, far from her real identity, far from the memories of her mother’s death, and outside the reaches of the drugged-out psycho who’s already tried to kill her twice. One tiny misstep–a single photograph–has shattered it all. She has no choice but to run again, but this time she’ll give herself a proper farewell: one night with Jacko.

Their highly charged emotional encounter changes everything. In Jacko’s arms there cannot be fear, there can only be pleasure. Anyone wishing her harm will have to pass through him, and Jacko is a hard man to kill.

  • Stich ‘n Bitch

Stich ‘n Bitch by Debbie Stoller

RECOMMENDED: Stitch ‘n Bitch by Debbie Stoller is $1.99 at Amazon! I’m not sure if this sale is about to end or if there will be some price-matching later on in the day. This is the book that taught me how to knit. It’s easily to follow along and has some easy, fun projects for beginners.

Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.

In Stitch ‘n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch ‘n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch ‘n Bitch group.

  1. CelineB says:

Heartbeat Braves by Pamela Sanderson is free on Amazon. This was on Jayne from Dear Author’s best of 2016 list. The hero and heroine are Native American and the heroine at least works for a Native American Center. It’s definitely one I’m looking forward to reading.

  2. cleo says:

@CelineB – Thanks! It’s free on Kobo too and I just downloaded it. It’s been on my wishlist since I read Jayne’s review.

  3. Gigi says:

Midnight Vengeance sounds like all my kind of catnip but I just can’t with the hero’s name. Jacko!?! So not sexy.

  4. Sarah says:

Highly recommend The Female of the Species! It’s an incredible book.

  5. Liv says:

Stitch and Bitch!! That book has been on my shelves for years – it’s the best for learning how to knit.
