  • Accidentally on Purpose

Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis

Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis is $1.99! This is the third book in the Heartbreaker Bayseries and can be read as standalone. Readers loved the chemistry between the main couple, but felt the pace of the romance dragged at times. Have you read this one?

There’s no such thing as a little in love…

Elle Wheaton’s priorities: friends, career, and kick-ass shoes. Then there’s the muscular wall of stubbornness that’s security expert Archer Hunt—who comes before everything else. No point in telling Mr. “Feels-Free Zone” that, though. Elle will just see other men until she gets over Archer… which should only take a lifetime…

There’s no such thing as a little in lust…

Archer’s wanted the best for Elle ever since he sacrificed his law-enforcement career to save her. Their chemistry could start the next San Francisco earthquake and he craves her 24/7, but Archer doesn’t want to be responsible for the damage. The alternative? Watch her go out with guys who aren’t him…

There is such a thing as…

As far as Archer’s concerned, nobody is good enough for Elle. But when he sets out to prove it by sabotaging her dates, she gets mad—and things get hot as hell. Now Archer has a new mission: prove to Elle that her perfect man has been here all along…

  • A Wilder Rose

A Wilder Rose by Susan Wittig Albert

A Wilder Rose by Susan Wittig Albert is 99c at Amazon. This is literary historical fiction about Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, based on Lane’s diaries and Wilder’s letters. The author explores their relationship, and the reasons why Lane’s involvement in her mother’s publishing career was concealed. If you know of a Little House of the Prairie fan or you really like historical fiction, this book might make you a happy reader indeed.

In 1928, Rose Wilder Lane—world traveler, journalist, much-published magazine writer—returned from an Albanian sojourn to her parents’ Ozark farm. Almanzo Wilder was 71, Laura 61, and Rose felt obligated to stay and help. To make life easier, she built them a new home, while she and Helen Boylston transformed the farmhouse into a rural writing retreat and filled it with visiting New Yorkers. Rose sold magazine stories to pay the bills for both households, and despite the subterranean tension between mother and daughter, life seemed good.

Then came the Crash. Rose’s money vanished, the magazine market dried up, and the Depression darkened the nation. That’s when Laura wrote her autobiography, “Pioneer Girl,” the story of growing up in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, on the Kansas prairie, and by the shores of Silver Lake. The rest—the eight remarkable books that followed—is literary history.

But it isn’t the history we thought we knew. For the surprising truth is that Laura’s stories were publishable only with Rose’s expert rewriting. Based on Rose’s unpublished diaries and Laura’s letters, A Wilder Rose tells the true story of the decade-long, intensive, and often troubled collaboration that produced the Little House books—the collaboration that Rose and Laura deliberately hid from their agent, editors, reviewers, and readers.

Why did the two women conceal their writing partnership? What made them commit what amounts to one of the longest-running deceptions in American literature? And what happened in those years to change Rose from a left-leaning liberal to a passionate Libertarian?

In this impeccably researched novel and with a deep insight into the book-writing business gained from her own experience as an author and coauthor, Susan Wittig Albert follows the clues that take us straight to the heart of this fascinating literary mystery.

  • Firstlife

    Firstlife by Gena Showalter

Firstlife by Gena Showalter is $1.99! This scifi/fantasy YA novel is the first in the Everlife series, and it has a trippy, unique concept. Some readers felt the heroine was too perfect, while others loved the action and world-building Showalter created. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

    ONE CHOICE.
    TWO REALMS.
    NO SECOND CHANCE.

Tenley “Ten” Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she’ll live—after she dies.

There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she’s drawn to isn’t home to the boy she’s falling for? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…

  1. Cat C says:

Bought the box set! Particularly excited for the romantic suspense one (Finding His Mark). Serial killers and stalkers I just can’t do, so that eliminates a lot of romantic suspense for me, but I enjoy action and adventure elements when it’s in an “action movie” vein so I’m always looking for that aspect of the genre.

Oh, and I think this set caught my eye because I’m still thinking about Ten Thousand Hours by Ren Benton, whom I found via SBTB comments (hi Ren!), which starts out with a delightful vacation romance, then explores what needs to happen to make that work when the protagonists unexpectedly meet up in their “real lives.” So, starts out escapist but gets a little less so. But introduced me to the idea that vacation romances are fun! (As in real life I am discovering that vacations involving travel can actually be fun now that my anxiety is better managed)

Thanks Amanda for noting that the stories hadn’t been published elsewhere. There have been a few box sets I’ve passed on because the most intriguing stories were ones I already owned. I much prefer the strategy of publishing new stories in the set THEN after x months, if it was a limited time box set, authors publish their story on its own.

  2. SusanK says:

Moon Called and Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs and Slightly Married by Mary Balogh are $2.99 each at Amazon.

The Deception of the Emerald Ring by Lauren Willig is $1.99.

  3. Vicki says:

Tempted by First Life but reviews suggest it may end on a cliffhanger. Does anyone know?

  4. Amanda says:

@Vicki: I didn’t see anyone mention a cliffhanger in the Goodreads reviews, but that’s the only info I have.

  5. Lyndon says:

@Vicki Lifeblood, the sequel to Firstblood and in libraries near me. I haven’t read either, but a book review said “At the end, readers are left with a semblance of hope and an extensive list of work to be done, setting up the third book in this trilogy nicely.”

Which seems to me as at the edge of a cliff, but not actually over it and hanging on. So if I suddenly end up with a TBR pile that’s not taller than I am before the final book comes out, I’d be willing to give it a try.
