  • Baron

    Baron by Joanna Shupe

Baron by Joanna Shupe is 99c! This is the second book in the Knickerbocker Club series, which Redheadedgirl really enjoyed. Readers really liked the con artist heroine, but found that Baron wasn’t as good as the first book, Magnate. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads. Any fans of the series out there?

New York City’s Gilded Age shines as bright as the power-wielding men of the Knickerbocker Club. And one pragmatic industrialist is about to learn that a man may make his own destiny, but love is a matter of fortune . . .

Born into one of New York’s most respected families, William Sloane is a railroad baron who has all the right friends in all the right places. But no matter how much success he achieves, he always wants more. Having secured his place atop the city’s highest echelons of society, he’s now setting his sights on a political run. Nothing can distract him from his next pursuit—except, perhaps, the enchanting con artist he never saw coming . . .

Ava Jones has eked out a living the only way she knows how. As “Madame Zolikoff,” she hoodwinks gullible audiences into believing she can communicate with the spirit world. But her carefully crafted persona is nearly destroyed when Will Sloane walks into her life—and lays bare her latest scheme. The charlatan is certain she can seduce the handsome millionaire into keeping her secret and using her skills for his campaign—unless he’s the one who’s already put a spell on her . . .

  • The Purest Hook

The Purest Hook by Scarlett Cole

The Purest Hook by Scarlett Cole is 99c! This is the third book in the Second Circle Tattoos series and features a rockstar hero. The chemistry between the hero and heroine is something readers really enjoyed, but some felt that parts of the conflict felt forced or unnecessary at times. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

Can a love built on secrets survive?

Rugged, hot, and rock hard, Dred Zander is exactly the type of man that normally sends Pixie running. Not dreaming about running her hands down his washboard abs…and lower. The lead singer and guitarist for the band Preload embodies trouble behind his quick smile and guarded eyes, and Pixie left trouble behind her years ago along with the name Sarah Jane Travers and the pathetic trailer her mom called home. With her abusive past in her past, she has a new life, a new family at Second Circle, and a dream of opening her own business. She needs capital and time. What she doesn’t need is a tempting long-haired rocker or the paparazzi that follow him around.

But Dred has other ideas. Pixie’s sweet hazel eyes, purple hair and kaleidoscopic tattoo of exotic flowers that swirl up her arm haunt his dreams, and he knows she wants him too. He just has to convince her. But as a juicy exposé threatens to expose their pasts, and a blackmailer terrorizes their present, Pixie and Dred have to decide what really matters and fight like hell to keep it.

  • Big Rock

    Big Rock by Lauren Blakely

Big Rock by Lauren Blakely is 99c! Elyse read this one and did a Lightning Review for it. She said it had a good friends to lovers plot, but didn’t enjoy the hero POV throughout the book:

Overall, the book is cute and it’s sexy, but the plot is a little contrived and Spencer can be frustrating. If we’d had Charlotte’s voice, I think it would have evened out the story a bit.

It’s not just the motion of the ocean, ladies. It’s definitely the SIZE of the boat too.

And I’ve got both firing on all cylinders. In fact, I have ALL the right assets. Looks, brains, my own money, and a big cock.

You might think I’m an asshole. I sound like one, don’t I? I’m hot as sin, rich as heaven, smart as hell and hung like a horse.

Guess what? You haven’t heard my story before. Sure, I might be a playboy, like the NY gossip rags call me. But I’m the playboy who’s actually a great guy. Which makes me one of a kind.

The only trouble is, my dad needs me to cool it for a bit. With conservative investors in town wanting to buy his flagship Fifth Avenue jewelry store, he needs me not only to zip it up, but to look the part of the committed guy. Fine. I can do this for Dad. After all, I’ve got him to thank for the family jewels. So I ask my best friend and business partner to be my fiancée for the next week. Charlotte’s up for it. She has her own reasons for saying yes to wearing this big rock.

And pretty soon all this playing pretend in public leads to no pretending whatsoever in the bedroom, because she just can’t fake the kind of toe-curling, window-shattering orgasmic cries she makes as I take her to new heights between the sheets.

But I can’t seem to fake that I might be feeling something real for her.

What the fuck have I gotten myself into with this…big rock?

BIG ROCK is a standalone, dirty romance novel written from the guy’s POV by NYT Bestselling author Lauren Blakely…

  • The Border Trilogy

The Border Trilogy by Amanda Scott

The Border Trilogy by Amanda Scott is $1.99! This is a set of three historical romances. For the most part, readers enjoyed the trilogy. However, some readers mentioned that the first book in particular took a while to get through because the second half was so frustrating. Have you read any of these?

A special three-in-one edition of Amanda Scott’s enthralling Border Trilogy

In Border Bride, as Mary, Queen of Scots, languishes in the Tower of London as a prisoner of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth, war tears Scotland apart. To save her beloved homeland, a proud Highland beauty named Mary Kate MacPherson must wage her own battle when she’s forced into wedlock with the seductive Sir Adam Douglas.

In Border Fire, under cover of night, Rabbie Redcloak leads his ragtag army to defend Scotland’s borders against their English enemies. Few know that the legendary highwayman, who could find his way to hell and back, is in reality Sir Quinton Scott, scion of a powerful Scottish clan. Captured during a daring raid, he’s sentenced to hang. Luck comes his way in the form of an unlikely savior: a silver-blond beauty who risks her life to save his.

And in Border Storm, the rebellious daughter of a Scottish march warden, Lady Laurie Halliot is as fearless as she is beautiful. Now, to protect her runaway sister who stands accused of murder, Laurie offers herself as hostage—and reluctant bride—to the man who is her country’s enemy. She prays that her sister will return before the next wardens’ meeting, or Laurie herself will have to bear the punishment.

  • The Lyra Novels

The Lyra Novels by Patricia Wrede

The Lyra Novels by Patricia C. Wrede is $3.99! This set features five books (wow!) from the Lyra fantasy series. Readers say that you can probably read this out of order, as the characters are independent of each other, and the setting it the main common theme. However, many say these have a YA feel to them.

Five fantasy novels set in the magical world of Lyra.

    Shadow Magic

While Alkyra’s noblemen squabble, an ancient enemy, the Lithmern, raises an army. And as the head of the Noble House of Brenn attempts to organize an alliance, the princess Alethia celebrates her twentieth birthday. She is quick-witted, beautiful, and handy with a throwing knife. But on the next night, she passes through a dark corridor on her way to the banquet hall, and never emerges from the shadows. The Lithmern have kidnapped the princess. To find her way home, Alethia will have to learn to trust in the old tales, whose legends of magic and daring hold the only hope of saving her kingdom.

    Daughter of Witches

There is no worse time to visit Drinn than during the Midwinter Festival, when the city gates are sealed so that no outsider can witness the temple’s secret rituals. In an inn, where a young woman named Ranira works as an indentured servant for a brutal innkeeper, three guests have overstayed their welcome. Attempting to protect Ranira from her master’s cruelty, the three reveal their magical powers and attract the attention of the temple guards. Now, to save her new friends from certain death, Ranira must unleash the power that cost her parents their lives.

    The Harp of Imach Thyssel

When Emereck and Flindaran leave a caravan in search of adventure, it isn’t long before they stumble upon great danger. Emereck, a trained minstrel, and Flindaran, a nobleman masquerading as a tramp, have found a long-abandoned castle, and in it, one of Lyra’s most sought-after treasures: the Harp of Imach Thyssel. To keep it from falling into the wrong hands, Emereck will have to learn to harness its strength to create and destroy, with the fate of the kingdom hanging in the balance.

    Caught in Crystal

For more than a decade, Kayl has run a modest country inn. She opened it with her husband, and they managed it together until a summer illness took him away, leaving her alone with their two children. The three of them get by, living happily together as the years pass, but everything changes the day a sorceress named Corrana asks for a room. Now, to save her family and her world, Kayl will have to unlock a side of herself that she buried long ago.

    The Raven Ring

When Eleret’s mother is killed, she must travel to reclaim the belongings her mother left behind. The overland journey to the city of Ciaron is treacherous, but Eleret has no fear. She straps a dagger to her leg and sets off to recover one of her mother’s prized possessions: a ring etched with a raven. Eleret doesn’t know what’s special about her mother’s ring, but someone wanted it badly enough to kill for it. And to make it home in one piece, she’ll need to unlock the mysteries of the ring her mother died to protect.

  1. Cat C says:

I liked Baron better than Magnate because the hero was less of a jerk (if I recall correctly), and I really liked the heroine and her career–I’ve always loved seeing details of how fake seances are pulled off. It’s a great series for sure! My favorite, though, was the prequel novella Tycoon, which is an adorable meet cute/forced proximity on a train.

  2. GHN says:

The Lyra books are longtime favorites of mine, something to pull out on a filthy November night, or other times when i want something to gently cheer me up a bit!

  3. Carolyn says:

To my knowledge, Mary, Queen of Scots, was never in the Tower of London. Will not be getting these books. >:p

  4. Patricia C. Wreeeeedeeee!! Her Talking to Dragons (and the series it’s in) is probably my favorite YA fantasy ever. Also, judging by the long conversation I once had with her at a con, she’s amazingly helpful to newbie writers and as funny in person as she is on the page.

Her worldbuilding questions for fantasy writers (available on pcwrede.com last I checked) are also a fantastic resource for all the writers out there.

And I do recommend the Lyra novels, especially Caught in Crystal and The Raven Ring (which is a fantasy murder mystery).

  5. Katie Lynn says:

HIM by Bowen/Kennedy is $1 right now. MM with sportsball! I actually prefer the second in this series, US, but you really need to read HIM first.

  6. Gigi says:

I one clicked Big Rock when it went on sale and couldn’t get past the first few chapters. Spencer is annoying af and the plot requires some serious suspension of disbelief. It’s probably going to be a DNF. On the other hand, Baron is awesome even though I liked it less than Magnate.

  7. Katie Lynn says:

@gigi I also didn’t *love* Big Rock, but the second book, with the sister and best friend is really good. I believe it’s Mister O (don’t even get me started on how I hate that these aren’t considered a series even though they ARE CLEARLY A SERIES)

  8. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

I just finished Baron today, and I agree that it’s not quite as good as the first (I like a jerk hero #SorryNotSorry), but still a good read. But homeboy on the cover should be blond and it annoys me!

  9. CelineB says:

@Katie Lyn Thanks for the heads up! I’ve read Him, but not Us. I thought I’d check and see if Us was on sale as well and it was (for .99 as well).

  10. Lisa says:

Enjoyed the Shupe series and writing but did not care that the heroine is saved by the hero constantly in “Baron”.

  11. Gigi says:

@Katie Lynn I find myself with very little patience for himbos like Spencer and his juvenile POV. I just kept thinking this is the kind of guy that texts d*ck picks IRL. Is Mr. O more of the same?

  12. Katie Lynn says:

@gigi in the second book the heroine is more the sexual aggressor, but is also a virgin if I recall correctly. The hero was a very shy nerd type growing up and has only recently become ‘hot’, partly because he is now rich for the very thing that made him a nerd. He puts on a confident facade but still is relatively insecure from my recollection of the book. I found it to be pretty funny and endearing when I read it (I was wary of it after reading the second book but caught it on a preorder sale for a dollar, which is the only reason I picked it up, and was really pleasantly surprised).

  13. devra says:

i read the first knickerbocker in one sitting but cannot get into baron at all. it feels dull, the hero is not interesting, and as much as i love the con woman aspect i find her not compelling. there is nothing in their interactions (in what i have read so far) that makes me want to care about them.
