  • Suddenly One Summer

Suddenly One Summer by Julie James

Suddenly One Summer by Julie James is $1.99! James is a contemporary romance favorite around here and this book made it to the quarter-finals in this year’s DABWAHA Tournament. Readers warn that though they loved the ending, they warn it’s not your typical romantic way to end a story (no clue what this means, but saw several people commenting on it). Many also loved the heroine. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn’t mean she’s opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister’s case, she’s as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford…

Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He’s willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there’s no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for…

  • Through a Glass Darkly

Through a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen

Through a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal that’s being matched at a few other vendors. Historical fiction with a hint of romance, this book was originally published in the eighties. However, readers disagreed on the amount of detail and characterization. Some loved the rich detail, while others thought there was way too much. Have you read this one?

Karleen Koen’s sweeping saga contains unforgettable characters consumed with passion: the extraordinarily beautiful fifteen-year-old noblewoman, Barbara Alderley; the man she adores, the wickedly handsome Roger MontGeoffry; her grandmother, the duchess, who rules the family with cunning and wit; and her mother, the ineffably cruel, self-centered and licentious Diana. Like no other work, Through a Glass Darkly is infused with intrigue, sweetened by romance and awash in the black ink of betrayal.

  • Ruthless

    Ruthless by Anne Stuart

Ruthless by Anne Stuart is $2.99! This is a historical romance and I’d definitely say it’s a little on the darker side as (if I recall) both characters have a history of trauma. There is a significant age difference between the hero and heroine (sixteen years) and be forewarned, that the hero does sleep with other people while pursuing the heroine. I wrote a quick review of this on Goodreads back in 2011:

The sense of sexual tension between Rohan and Elinor was achieved perfectly. I just felt that the climax (pun intended) fell short of what I was expecting. I wanted more animalistic passion, I suppose, given Elinor’s sharp tongue and Rohan’s claimed prowess. In terms of that and the resolution of the book’s central conflict, the buildup was way more enjoyable to experience than the conclusion of both aspects.

Few outsiders will ever witness the dark misdeeds of the Heavenly Host. And among this secret society, where exiled Georgian aristocrats gather to indulge their carnal desires, fewer still can match the insatiable appetite of their chief provocateur, the mysterious Viscount Rohan.

Pursuit of physical pleasure is his both his preferred pastime and his most-pressing urge, until he encounters the fascination of a woman who won’t be swayed. And while his dark seduction appalls the pure and impoverished Elinor Harriman, she finds herself intrigued…and secretly drawn to the man behind the desire.

New York Times bestselling author Anne Stuart masterfully weaves an irresistible tale of lust and privilege in decadent times. Passions will be loosed, egos will be tamed-This is Rohan.

  • Black Ice

    Black Ice by Anne Stuart

Black Ice by Anne Stuart is $2.49! This is a romantic suspense that I had some mixed feelings about. I couldn’t decide whether to give it two stars or four stars on Goodreads, and my main issue came from the believability with the romance:

The relationship between Chloe and Bastien developed at a decent pace, but at the end of the book, all I felt they truly had in common was the ability to join forces and have some awesome sex. Like an adult, non-incestuous version of the Wonder Twin powers. I’d also consider myself open-minded in the ways of relationships, though I think the age difference between the two of them was a bad idea. About a decade is the gap and add in Bastien’s unconventional, ass-kicking lifestyle, I have a hard time seeing them “making it work.” If an epilogue were to happen, I can see Chloe suggesting couple’s therapy (because you know it’s bound to happen) and Bastien choosing instead to methodically clean his guns in front of her like my father did when he needed some “me” time. Maybe in the second book within the Ice series, we’ll get a glimpse or mention of them to see how that whole…thing is working out for them.

For those who have read this one, did you feel differently than I did?

Living paycheck to paycheck in Paris, American book translator Chloe Underwood would give anything for some excitement and passion–even a little danger. So when she’s offered a lucrative weekend gig translating at a business conference in a remote chateau, she jumps at the chance to shake things up.

Then by chance Chloe discovers her employers are anything but the entrepreneurs they appear, and suddenly she knows far too much. Her clients are illegal arms dealers, and one of them is ordered to kill her. But instead, Bastien Toussaint drags Chloe away, and the next thing she knows she’s on the run with the most terrifying and seductive man she’s ever met. What were his motives–and would she live long enough to find out

Ruthless is my ultimate favorite Stuart! Elinor is like an Austen heroine (think Dashwood) who lives in the sleaziest edge-of-ruin slum you can imagine with a sweet younger sister to take care of. I love the battle of wits, the unscrupulous things both lead characters do, and just the whole story. I’ve read it like five times. I’m now going to get it for Kindle because my original copy was on nook.

I lost my tattered old copy of Through a Glass Darkly when TS Gaston flooded our basement. Time to replace and re-read.

Mr. L has been has been wringing his hands on whether or not he will order the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker today.

I have such fond memories of “Through a Glass Darkly”! I started it when I was babysitting one evening and pulled it off the shelf after my charges were in bed and I was looking for something to amuse myself. The people I was sitting for very kindly offered to lend it to me (though what they thought of a thirteen year old reading it who knows), but I bashfully refused.

Imagine my joy when I discovered it in my high school library two years later. To my great good luck my homeroom was in the library (overcrowded school) and so I had between ten and twenty minutes every day to disappear into the stacks and read. I skimmed it over the course of a year. (I’m actually not sure why I never thought of checking it out. I just liked having something to read in homeroom.)

My memories of Georgian England involved lolling against library bookshelves unwilling to take the time to go and sit down. I think even in high school I had some serious issues with parts of the book, but it holds a place in my heart in spite of some stuff that does NOT age well. (Trying to avoid spoilers, but the attitude toward homosexuality made even fifteen year old me go O_o?)

@LauraL, just order it for him! We got an Instant Pot last year around the holidays, and it’s been great! 🙂 And yay on being able to replace an old favorite!

I enjoyed Through a Glass Darkly many years ago but Book Amnesia keeps the details from me. I think I might still have that copy somewhere. I am getting the Kindle version and I am going to dig through my shelves to see if I still have the book. Of course doing so I will find other books I want to reread sigh.
My TBR is like a virtual Jenga – I pull out books from the middle to read while stacking new ones on the top. 🙂

I have had my Instant Pot for over a year and I love it!

  6. Ele says:

I have a love/hate relationship with Anne Stuart’s Ice series–Black Ice is the first, I think. The stories are way beyond improbable, and the mysterious organization for whom the heroes work regularly crosses the line from covert-ops for the good guys into insane power-mad machinations. The bad-boy heroes are usually trying to convince themselves they and their organization are doing good, but the plots tend to revolve around the hero having been ordered to kill off the heroine for no reason except she just happens to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Annoying? You bet! But… if you have a weakness for bad-boys, Anne Stuart really knows how to deliver.
