A Meddle of Wizards
Author: Alexandra Rushe
Released: January 9, 2018 by Rebel Base Books
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy, Young Adult
Series: Fledgling Magic #1Welcome to Tandara, where gods are fickle, nightmares are real, and trolls make excellent bakers . . .
Raine Stewart is convinced she’ll die young and alone in Alabama, the victim of a chronic, mysterious illness. Until a man in a shabby cloak steps out of her mirror and demands her help to defeat a bloodthirsty wizard.
Raine shrugs it off as a hallucination—just one more insult from her failing body—and orders her intruder to take a hike. But the handsome figment of her imagination won’t take no for an answer, and kidnaps her anyway, launching her into a world of utmost danger—and urgent purpose.
Ruled by unpredictable gods and unstable nations, Tandara is a land of shapeshifters and weather-workers, queens and legends. Ravenous monsters and greedy bounty hunters patrol unforgiving mountains. Riverboats pulled by sea-cattle trade down broad waterways. And creatures of nightmare stalk Raine herself, vicious in the pursuit of her blood.
But Raine isn’t helpless or alone. She’s part of a band as resourceful as it is odd: a mage-shy warrior, a tattered wizard, a tenderhearted giant, and a prickly troll sorceress. Her new friends swear she has powers of her own. If she can stay under their protection, she might just live long enough to find out . . .
Sarah says: I love the title, I love the concept, and I’m hoping that “A meddle of wizards” is the plural collective, like “an implausability of gnus,” “a parliament of owls,” or my favorite, from the late and much missed Meoskop, “a petulance of Batmans.”

Genre: Historical: American, Romance
Series: Old West #3From USA Today Bestselling Author Beverly Jenkins comes a new novel in a mesmerizing series set in the Old West, where an arranged marriage becomes a grand passion . . .
What kind of mail-order bride greets her intended with a bullet instead of a kiss? One like Regan Carmichael—an independent spirit equally at home in denims and dresses. Colton, who buried his heart along with his first wife, insists he only wants someone to care for his daughter. Yet Regan is drawn to the unmistakable desire in his gaze.
Regan’s far from the docile bride Colton was expecting. Still, few women would brave the wilds of Wyoming Territory for an uncertain future with a widower and his child. And despite his family’s disapproval and an unseen enemy, he’ll risk all to make this match a real union of body and soul.

I got an advance copy of Meddle of Wizards and liked it a lot. Yes, Sarah, it’s plural collective. It’s got a kind of goofy humor (which sometimes veers into corny) which keeps it a fairly light read.
Also got an advance copy of Every Dog Has His Day by Jenn McKinlay and it was SO adorable. Single mom, charming neighbor, snowbound, and on top of it there’s a rambunctious kitten and an adorable poodle (just thinking of him makes me melt, good boy Rufus!).
I’m really excited about many of the upcoming releases. Way to start the new year off right! I’d already preordered a number of these (because my Kindle cloud isn’t overflowing enough), but there are lots of new goodies, too. I’m really interested in the new series by Jennifer Ashley and Sujata Massey (I was a big fan of Massey’s Rei Shimura series), so thanks for bringing them to my notice. But mostly, I’m just counting the hours until Sharon Lee and Steve Miller’s newest Liaden book downloads in the wee hours tonight. 🙂
The “James Patterson Presents” is an imprint not written by Patterson, but uses his name to boost visibility of newer authors. It started as the romance spin off of his BookShots novella line in 2016, which are written in whole or part by Patterson.
So many books to look forward to reading in 2018! I can’t wait to get started.
From the Jennifer Ashley blurb: “Along with the assistance of Lord Rankin’s unconventional sister-in-law and a mathematical genius,“
Is the SIL a mathematical genius or does that description refer to another person? The phrasing is awkward.
Magical knife wielding female assassins? Take my money!!!
@ Chelle – agree the phrasing is awkward, just read a review for this one over at AAR and it clarifies things – there is the sil Lady Cynthia and someone else who is a friend of the hero’s who is the mathematical genius.
Wow, the new VERONICA SPEEDWELL is $12.99 in Kindle, and only $7.49 in paperback? Not feeling the love at that price!Hard pass
I’m looking forward to Michelle Sagara’s Cast in Deception which comes out on January 23rd.
Aside from The Reign of the Fallen (January 23), Down by Contact (January 16), and Zero Hour (January 30), I’m suuuuuuuuper pumped by Liz Jacobs’ ABROAD PART 2 (drops tomorrow!!!!)
This is a low buy month for me–which is OK with me. 😉
Here’s some interesting background on “James Patterson Presents”:
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/22/business/media/james-patterson-has-a-big-plan-for-small-books.html (tl;dr: He’s been publishing shorter books in a million genres, all of which he “co-writes” except for the romances, which he “presents.”)
I can only respect the way this dude has monetized his name. He’s moved out of gazillion-selling thrillers and now publishes westerns, sci-fi, YA, middle-grade, picture books. He’s taken a special interest in getting boys to read and has several initiatives to encourage it (see here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2017/05/08/james-patterson-has-some-ideas-on-what-to-do-about-that-summer-slide-and-reading/). He donates a ton of money to public school libraries and independent bookstores. Part of me thinks he’s a total hack (and I have read some of his co-written MG and YA, and thought it was utterly meh) and part of me thinks he’s a brilliant businessman and an ethical hero.
@marjorie: I’m not impressed by Patterson at all. He makes about $100 million a year. And, regardless of his motives, he gets tax write-offs for his charitable donations. I certainly don’t begrudge him his financial success, but that just means he’s a shrewd businessman, not a hero.
The source of my rancor lies with that whole Authors United/Amazon/Hachette thing. I recognize that there were a lot of issues involved, but I was really put off by mega-rich authors being totally willing to screw over their readers in the fight. (I know that a lot of people don’t share my opinion/characterization of this, but I have strong feelings about the AU authors. I hold grudges about some things. lol)
@Kimberlee: I think the pricing is a bit misleading since I think the book is being released in hardback first and the Kindle price is about $5 less than that. I don’t think the paperback version will be available until next year, when the Kindle version should also reflect a decrease. I don’t know why they’re even advertising a PB version at this point. Regardless, all these prices are expensive AF (which ties into my other comments above).
@Kimberlee, two words: public library. Which is where I’m #1 on the hold list for the new Deanna Raybourn.
There wasn’t really much on my radar besides the Veronica Speedwell and the new Lauren Dane, so thanks for totally screwing up the new year reading plan.
I’m looking forward to SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME by Katie McGarry.
Some intriguing choices above … thank you, I think!
FYI: Currently free to Kindle readers is Jennifer Ashley’s Past Crimes: A Compendium of Historical Mysteries. One of the three included works is: A Soupçon of Poison (Kat Holloway Victorian Mysteries)
“Kat Holloway, a young cook who is highly sought after by the wealthy of Victorian London, becomes embroiled in murder and must clear her name. Only the mysterious Daniel McAdam, who is much more than he seems, can come to her aid.”

Totally off topic but dear SB’s–why is most new romantic/scifi/fantasy YA? Wish there were more quality grownup stuff. xxoocf
@ChefCheyanne. I totally agree! I love the covers on most of the YA and wish they would devote some of those artistic resources to more adult fiction – and also more authors.
@Willa – thank you for the clarification!
@ELIZABETH – thanks for the heads-up! I really enjoyed McGarry’s Thunder Road series. I’ll give her new one a try.
