  • What It Takes

What It Takes by Shannon Stacey

    Author: Shannon Stacey
Released: February 28, 2017 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: Kowalski Family #10

Revisit all of your Kowalski favorites while falling in love with a brand-new romance in this reunion novel from New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey

Laney Caswell is looking for a change. A decade’s worth of less-than-happy matrimony behind her, she wants peace—movies, books and, best of all, a new job at the Northern Star Lodge in Whitford, Maine. Spending the summer living in a camper is her chance to rediscover what makes her happy, and a perfect transition to her new life.

Being a paramedic in Whitford is nothing like Ben Rivers’s city life, but when Josh Kowalski offers him the job, the lure of his hometown is too much to resist. Also too much to resist: Laney Caswell. Ben always thought he’d have a wife and kids, a happy family like the Kowalskis have all built, but he never made time in his life. Now he’s found a woman who draws him like no other and helps him dream again—and the last thing she wants is a husband.

When the annual Kowalski family camping trip is moved to the Northern Star, both Ben and Laney are surrounded by the kind of happiness they’ve always wanted but never had. It just might be theirs—if they can put aside the past and reach for it together.

Sarah says: I know, technically February, but I didn’t find out about it until recently so it’s on my March schedule. TRY AND STOP ME. (Wow I’m cranky).

Now, he has a simple mission: to infiltrate Gideon’s Riders, the infamous sect of holy warriors that protects the people of Sector One.

He’s never failed to execute an objective, but there’s one thing he didn’t anticipate–running into Dr. Kora Bellamy, the only woman to ever break through his icy exterior.

When Kora fled her life as a military doctor for the Makhai Project, all she wanted was peace–a quiet life where she could heal the sick and injured. The royal Rios family welcomed her like a sister, but she could never forget Ashwin. His sudden reappearance is a second chance–if she can manage to touch his heart.

When the simmering tension between them finally ignites, Kora doesn’t realize she’s playing with fire. Because she’s not just falling in love with a man who may not be able to love her back. Ashwin has too many secrets–and one of them could destroy her.

Amanda says: The Beyond series is over, but Kit Rocha has blessed us with a new spin off series to start.

The Billionaire Beast by Jackie Ashenden

    Author: Jackie Ashenden
Released: March 7, 2017 by Swerve
    Genre: ,
    Series: Billionaire Fairytales #2

Dark, tortured, and intimidating, these dominant billionaires will steal their innocent heroines’ breath away. Overwhelmed by their desire to control their world, they push their heroines to explore their deepest desires. But even the most unworldly of heroines can unlock these billionaires’ secrets.

Nero de Santis: Damaged. Bastard. Beast.

Nero hasn’t left his house in ten years—he demands the world come to him, and the world is only too happy to bend to the strong-willed billionaire. Ruthless, cold, and selfish, Nero wants for nothing and takes care of no one but himself. His last handful of assistants have left his house in tears, but the prim redhead applying for the job looks up to the task. Nero has spent his life shut within the walls he built, with no care to have more than a window to the outside world. But the fiery passion he senses beneath his reserved assistant’s exterior makes him want to break down the barriers he lives behind, and unleash the beast within.

    Phoebe Taylor: Uptight. Misunderstood. Engaged.

Phoebe needs the obscene amount of money that comes with being Nero’s personal assistant for one thing, and one thing only—to pay for the mounting hospital costs that her fiancee’s two-year coma continues to incur. She’s heard rumors that the de Santis beast is a force that cannot be tamed—but even she isn’t prepared to handle the smoldering intensity simmering beneath his hard shell of feral dominance. Nero is hiding something, something he is fighting with every step he takes. Yet he can’t help but stake his claim on this woman who has shaken up his life, and Phoebe can’t believe this animal of a man is the one person to ever look into her eyes and see her soul. Nero wants to keep her. He wants to devour her. And Phoebe just might let him.

Elyse says: I love Beauty and the Beast stories and I love Jackie Ashenden’s super hot writing, so this is a win-win.

The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel

    Author: Amy Engel
Released: March 7, 2017 by Crown
    Genre:

Vowing to discover the fate of her missing cousin, a woman returns to her family’s Kansas estate where she spent one haunting summer as a teen, and where she discovered the dark heart of the Roanoke clan that left her no choice but to run.

Lane Roanoke is fifteen when she comes to live with her maternal grandparents and fireball cousin, Allegra, at the Roanoke family estate in rural Osage Flats, Kansas, following the suicide of her mother. Lane knows little of her mother’s family, other than the fact that her mother ran away years before and cut off all contact with her parents. Allegra, abandoned by her own mother at birth and raised by her grandparents, introduces Lane to small-town life and the benefits of being one of the rich and beautiful Roanoke girls. But there is darkness at the heart of the Roanoke family, and when Lane discovers its insidious pull she has no choice but to run, as far and as fast as she can.

Eleven years later, Lane is scraping by in Los Angeles when her grandfather calls with the news that Allegra has gone missing. “Come home,” he beckons. Unable to resist his pleas, Lane returns to Osage Flats, determined to find her cousin and assuage her own guilt at having left Allegra behind all those years ago. Her return might mean a second chance with Cooper, the boyfriend whom she loved and destroyed that fateful summer. But it also means facing the terrible secret that made her flee, one she may not be strong enough to run from again.

As it weaves between the summer of Lane’s first arrival and the summer of her return, The Roanoke Girls shocks and tantalizes, twisting its way through revelation after mesmerizing revelation, exploring the secrets families keep and the fierce and terrible love that both binds them together and rips them apart.

Elyse says: Family secrets are kind of my jam when it comes to psychological thrillers.

  • Lola

    Lola by Melissa Scrivner Love

    Author: Melissa Scrivner Love
Released: March 21, 2017 by Crown
    Genre:

The Crenshaw Six are a small but up-and-coming gang in South Central LA who have recently been drawn into an escalating war between rival drug cartels. To outsiders, the Crenshaw Six appear to be led by a man named Garcia . . . but what no one has figured out is that the gang’s real leader (and secret weapon) is Garcia’s girlfriend, a brilliant young woman named Lola.

Lola has mastered playing the role of submissive girlfriend, and in the man’s world she inhabits she is consistently underestimated. But in truth she is much, much smarter–and in many ways tougher and more ruthless–than any of the men around her, and as the gang is increasingly sucked into a world of high-stakes betrayal and brutal violence, her skills and leadership become their only hope of survival.

An astonishing debut crime thriller about an unforgettable woman who combines the genius and ferocity of Lisbeth Salander with the ruthless ambition of Walter White. Lola marks the debut of a hugely exciting new thriller writer, and of a singular, magnificent character unlike anyone else in fiction.

Amanda says: A thriller with a female gang leader behind the scenes, pulling the strings. I’m interested in how this will fit into our previous discussions on female rage.

Elyse, I haven’t had my first cup of coffee yet, but where is the cosplay part? I don’t see it in the blurb but I am soooo much more intrigued by a cosplay romance than by the blurb I see here.

Also, general comment – that Black Lily cover tho? What is he doing out there, and why does he look so bored about it?

  4. JenM says:

An Extraordinary Union sounds similar to The Secrets of Mary Bowser by Lois Leveen, a historical that I read last year. It’s classified as fiction, but it’s based on the life of a real woman, Mary Bowser. She was a freed slave living in Philadelphia who returned to Virginia during the war, pretended to be a slave, worked in the household of Jefferson Davis, and was believed to have provided invaluable intelligence for the Union army. It’s fascinating and I highly recommend it. Having read that book, I’m very excited to read this one also.

  5. An Extraordinary Union is extraordinary. Sarah, you will love it.

I am so stoked for Amanda Steven’s new book in the Graveyard Queen series, “The Awakening”. Amelia is a cemetery restorer who can see ghosts. Creepy and very cool! ^_^

So Excited for Shelly Laurenston’s The Unyielding too!

Welp, looks like another dangerous month for the wallet! “Done Dirt Cheap” looks AMAZING. I miss “Sons of Anarchy” and I’m so ready for kick-butt heroines. The newer show on TNT (or AMC?) called “Animal Kingdom” also has an SOA feel to it, too, with the mother hen reminiscent of a Gemma-type character. Crime families with morals…so fascinating.
“An Extraordinary Union”…all the grabby hands.

For some reason, Stieg is also on the cover of “Wild things” by Jennifer Ashley. I don’t remember offhand what Stieg’s job is; maybe he’s a cover model.

@rosarita That would totally fit with the LA Crows! (although I’m not sure if any of the Ravens were in show business) Thanks to Sarah I read The Unleashing this month and am half way through The Undoing, so I can’t wait until The Unyielding comes out at the end of the month.

  11. Susan says:

@Heather S: Me, too! But I’m glad it’s being released later in the month because the Briggs and Bishop books coming out on the same day is sending me into a meltdown.

  12. Leigh Kramer says:

I am so so so so excited to read The Unyielding!!!! Sarah, I’m so glad you talked up this series because it has become one of my favorites.

  13. Mac Betty says:

I swear I have had March 7th circled in my calendar for the last 5 or 6 months. I am literally counting down the days until I get my hands on Etched in Bone, *and* Silence Fallen, *and*
    Ashwin (Gideon’s Riders #1). It’s like Christmas!

The bad decisions book club will be having a meeting at my place March 7th through March 9th…

  14. Lauren says:

    An Extraordinary Union sounds amazing!

  15. Julia says:

I’ve only read 3 KA books, so I’m not a devotee, but I can’t stop thinking about her new one coming out. Maybe it’s the cover. Mmmm… honey. She’s calling the hero a ‘submissive alpha’. What? May have to read.

Just put the An Extraordinary Union in my shopping cart. I mean, I have to get the Pur filters. And if I had one little book? ;D

  16. Sarah says:

I have a very small book budget this year so I’m limited to only a few new releases this spring. I’m on my library’s waiting list for Patricia Brigg’s newest. Shelly Laurenston/Crows 3 – I am so excited for this one and I have already requested the vacation day off from work, I know I will be up all night!

And then I have have a long wait for summer/fall. Ilona Andrews is releasing the 2nd and 3rd book in the Hidden Legacy series, which I adore. I’ve been listening to her Edge, Innkeeper, and Burn For Me (HL 1) audiobooks this week. And then Nalini Singh’s Archangel’s Viper in September.

  17. Crystal says:

I’ve already pre-ordered An Extraordinary Union and Magic for Nothing (I love me some Incryptid, and have been waiting for Antimony to get onstage).

If anyone needs me, I’m looking covetously at Strange the Dreamer, The Unyielding, Lola, and Done Dirt Cheap. Mommy want, but Mommy is saving up for a trip and needs to exhibit some self-restraint (dammit). I don’t have to look that way at The Bone Witch, though. My mom picked me up an ARC of that baby at ALA back in January. >:)

  18. Maureen says:

@Sarah-You are my kind of people! You took a vacation day to read a new release? I love that so, so much!! I am also crazy excited to read the new Crow book-I’m going to re-read the first two in the next week, so I’m geared up and ready to go!

  19. wizzardofxxxx says:

@sandyl I am super excited about the new Mercy book! I’m re-reading Fire Touched until the new book is out

  20. Brigit says:

March is cruel to my wallet. In addition to Logan/Wolverine coming to theatres, there’s also the release of Dr Strange on Bluray…

I’m very excited about Etched in Bone and The Unyielding. Then there are 2 new Cynthia Edens (After The Dark and Abduction, which I’ve alread read), and a new Jo Davis (Face The Flames). I’ve also pre-ordered the new Kristen Ashley, having never read any of her other books, just because male subs are my catnip right now.
