Movie Review: The Spy Who Dumped Me
If you are lucky in life, you will have a friend or two that you will ride or die for, and will ride or die for you. I highly recommend it. If you are unlucky, you may end up in a situation where you need to get a MacGuffin to Vienna after your roommate’s one night stand murdered your (Ex?) boyfriend who is also a spy. But, if you do end up in that place, … Continue reading Movie Review: The Spy Who Dumped Me

311. A Nerdy Bookish Deep Dive into My Oxford Year with Julia Whelan
After we recorded our interview about My Oxford Year, author Julia Whelan asked if I ever did more spoiler-heavy analytical conversations about books after they’re published. Well, we do now! In this episode, we do a deep-dive into the book, the themes and Easter eggs hidden within it, and the structural and stylistic decisions that went into the creation of the story. If you haven’t read it and you think you might want to, beware … Continue reading 311. A Nerdy Bookish Deep Dive into My Oxford Year with Julia Whelan

RECOMMENDED: The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the first book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A grade:
I totally recommend reading The Duchess Deal, but preferably while sober so you can really appreciate all of it. It’s the perfect blend of two of my favorite fairytale tropes, it’s got a hero who never an alpha-hole, it’s funny, and it’s got female friendship. What more could you want?

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
The main thing you need to know about The Calculating Stars is that it has a slow pace. The other thing you need to know is that it is feminist and nerdy. This alternate-history novel by Mary Robinette Kowal tells a story of women who worked as computers for the US Space Program and who fight to become astronauts. Much of what happens in the book happened in real life (see: Hidden Figures and The Mercury 13). … Continue reading The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

Extreme Sports, Historical Romance, & More
Shades of Treason by Sandy Williams is $2.99! This is a scifi romance where the heroine and her former mentor experience pants feelings. Readers loved the amount of action in the book, but felt the ending was unresolved and seemed like a cliffhanger. The follow up book is $4.99, if you’re determined to continue.

Girl at the Grave by Teri Bailey Black
Girl at the Grave is a YA gothic mystery with a love triangle. It’s not deep, and the solution to the mystery is utterly unbelievable. However, I read it on a rainy day with a cup of tea and enjoyed it for the most part, despite its flaws. If you are in the mood for a weird village and plots and rich snobs and an old decrepit mansion, then this may pass the time quite … Continue reading Girl at the Grave by Teri Bailey Black

HaBO: Always Makes Love in French
This HaBO request comes from A.D. and they’ve been looking for this series for years: I read these books between 2005 and 2006, as part of a historical romance book club. At the time, I never really took stock of names. Each book in the series follows a different couple and I’ve only read two of them. The first I remember was of an Englishman who falls for an American noblewoman. The girl is also … Continue reading HaBO: Always Makes Love in French

Vampires, YA, & More
Unfixable by Tessa Bailey is 99c! I’m a huge Tessa Bailey fan and I was surprised to find a book by her that I haven’t heard of before. This is a standalone contemporary with an antagonistic relationship. Readers say the romance has a slow and satisfying build to it. However, if you’re also a Bailey fan, some readers note this one isn’t as explicit as her other books.

HaBO: Austrian Archduchess Leaves Her Husband
This HaBO is from Hayley, who is looking for a romance from the last two or three decades: I am looking for a romance book I read in the late 80s/early 90s. It’s about an Austrian archduchess (I think) who leaves her abusive husband and takes her two children, a boy and a girl, to Paris. Maybe Victorian age? There she meets an English aristocrat called Edward and I think her daughter dies. It has … Continue reading HaBO: Austrian Archduchess Leaves Her Husband
