HaBO: Not a Mary Balogh

This HaBO request is from SL, who wants to find this romance:

I’m looking for a regency romance. I thought it was a Mary Balogh book, but can’t find it, so it might be an author similar to Balogh.

What I know for certain: Hero either kills or wounds brother in a duel. Hero had meant to delope, but was young and a terrible shot…

Hero is either exiled by family or is self-exiled. He either goes to war or travels for years.

The book I’m looking for is NOT The Notorious Rake by Mary Balogh.

This may be a challenging one!

  1. Jenna says:

This is probably a fairly common plot device (I know I’ve read another more recently), but the first thing that came to mind is Julia Quinn’s A Night Like This. It’s a plot point in the other books in the series (Smythe-Smith Quartet), but this is the one where he’s actually the hero. The guy he wounds is his good friend, though, not his brother. The friend doesn’t bear him a grudge, but friend’s crazy dad does, so the hero spends years on the run on the continent.

Hmm, this sounds like a Carla Kelly story that I read in one of her collections. I will try to determine the title and anthology titles.

  3. Kareni says:

I wonder if it is “An Object of Charity” in Carla Kelly’s Christmas Collection.

  4. squee me says:

Agree with @Jenna, this sounds like JQ’s A Night Like This.

  5. Carmen says:

Maybe one of the following novels are what you are looking for:
Temptation of a Governess by Cathy Maxwell

Just One Kiss by Samantha James
    Good Luck!

  6. Sarah M says:

From the limited info, that sounds exactly like the set up for Heartless by Mary Balogh.
