Links: Censorship, a Subway for Cats, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Happy Wednesday! (Is it Wednesday?)

I have a vacation coming up in three weeks, but before that, I have to get through so many deadlines and things. Woof. I can’t tell if working toward a vacay makes me more motivated or just makes all the deadlines more annoying.

The Thursday Murder Club adaptation comes out this week. My friend and I are doing a buddy watch over the weekend. I asked her what she wanted me to bring and her response was a chocolate cake.

Are any of you planning to watch it this week? I think the casting is really good.

This link was sent in by Lorraine! Book Riot has a recap of some censorship news as it pertains to romance novels. (Starting off with the bummer links first!)

These ereader sleeves are absolutely gorgeous. I haven’t purchased one yet, but I’m very tempted.

According to a Reddit post, a few authors have reported that KU titles may being appearing in a library network near you!

I love seeing the great lengths people go to for their pets. This person built a subway platform for their cats.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

NYTimes article “The Bad Bitch Book Club Goes to Camp”. I don’t often have that feeling of Oh! I wish I could have been part of this event or gone to that show, but this book camp sounds to me like the most perfect way to spend a week.

Riding someone’s shoulders was a common form of transportation in feudal Japan (at several river crossings on a major highway). I saw this depicted in a movie and it fascinated me! https://www.oldphotosjapan.com/photos/934/piggybacking-the-tokaido-s-mightiest-rivers

I recently learned about “structural coloration”, in which color is produced by texture instead of pigment. It came up when I was reading about dragonflies, but peacock tails use it too (they are pigmented brown!). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structural_coloration

This is more of a factoid with a link for verification, but a fish has the scientific name “Boops boops”. The official pronunciation is “bo ops” (to rhyme with co-ops, not loops), but I think that’s a fig leaf. If they *really* wanted it pronounced that way they’d have done it differently; they know people will say it the more obvious and fun way. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boops_boops

Love the ereader sleeves (and many other items on that site– thanks for introducing me to it!); I’d selected one and was about to finalize the order… only to discover that U.S. shipping is now suspended 🙁

  4. @Amanda says:

@Adrienne: Damn! I was also hoping to grab one. I was waiting for a specific style to come back in stock.

  5. Adrienne says:

@Amanda: Well, at least they promise that it’s temporary! Like me, you may want to stay tuned (I’m snapping up that Luna Moth ereader sleeve ASAP).

  6. Adrienne says:

@Amanda: Good news! Just got an email from The Quirky Cup Collective that shipping to the U.S. is set to resume on September 26th! (According to Australia Post.) So get your order ready 🙂 (Has that style you wanted come back in stock yet? If not, it may have by then.)

  7. @Amanda says:

@Adrienne: Thank you! I’m holding out for the Sugar & Spice design. The listing says it’ll be back in October, which is good timing.
