    Canadian Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday

Canadian Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday is $1.99! This one was released last year and features a single dad, hockey player hero. This one doesn’t seem as well reviewed as Holiday’s other contemporary romances. Did you read this one?

A charming and heartfelt romance about a woman who comes face to face with the fake Canadian boyfriend she made up as a teenager.

The fake Canadian boyfriend. It’s a thing. The get out of jail free card for all kinds of sticky social situations. “I can’t go to prom; I’m going to be out of town visiting my boyfriend in Canada.” It’s all over pop culture. But Aurora Evans did it first. Once upon a time she met a teenage hockey player at the Mall of America. He was from Canada. He was a boy. She may have fudged the “friend” part a little, but it wasn’t like she was ever going to see him again. It wasn’t like she hurt anyone. Until she did—years later—on both counts.

When pro hockey player and recent widower Mike Martin walks into the dance studio where Aurora Evans teaches, he’s feeling overwhelmed with the fact that his wife may not have been exactly who he thought she was and the logistics of going back to work. As one of the few people his angry, heartbroken daughter connects with, Aurora agrees to be a pseudo nanny to help him navigate the upcoming school year and hockey season. To his surprise, she turns out to be the perfect balm for him as well. Aurora gets him. The real him underneath his pro jersey. And yet, he still finds himself holding back, unable to fully trust again—especially when he finds out the secret Aurora’s been hiding from him.

  • Silver Under Nightfall

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco is $1.99! This is a horror mystery, I’d say, with a queer, poly romantic subplot. I know that descriptor will perk someone’s ears right up!

Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters—this gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.

Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.

When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice.

    It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret.

But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

  • The Beginning of Everything

The Beginning of Everything by Kristen Ashley

The Beginning of Everything by Kristen Ashley is $2.99 at Amazon! This is a fantasy romance and the first in The Rising series. The book’s description makes it seem like we’re getting all four romances at one time, rather than one per book. Can anyone weigh in?

Once upon a time, in a parallel universe, there existed the continent of Triton…

The land was filled with beauty, but it was also splintered by war.

Out of the chaos grew a conspiracy to reawaken the Beast, a fearsome creature who wrought only tragedy and devastation. The only way to stop him is to fulfill an ancient prophecy: Triton’s four strongest warriors must wed its four most powerful witches, binding all nations together and finally bringing peace to the land.

This is the beginning of the story of their unions: the quiet maiden Silence and the savage king Mars. The cold warrior Cassius and the fiery witch Elena. The steadfast soldier True and the banished beauty Farah. And the pirate king Aramus and his mysterious queen Ha-Lah.

Their unions will not be easy, but each couple must succeed…

The fate of their world is at stake.

  • A Holiday by Gaslight

A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews

A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews is $1.99! This is a historical romance novella set during a house party during the holidays. Sarah reviewed this one and gave it a C+. Here are some of the good things she said:

I liked the central romance, and I really liked Sophie and Ned. I liked the contrast in their conversations from before they agreed to be mutually candid and afterward. There were some moments I found incredibly charming, and some development of the story that was heartfelt and genuine.

    A Dutiful Daughter

Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run of the mill London merchant. He’s grim and silent. A man of little emotion–or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she’s ready to put an end to things. After all, even a dutiful daughter has her limits.

    A Taciturn Tradesman

Ned has come a long way since his days working as a draper’s assistant. He’s wealthy, ambitious, and eager to take a wife. But the courtship advice issued in The Gentlemen’s Book of Etiquette isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Though he’s followed it to the letter, Miss Appersett still doesn’t wish to see him again. Frustrated and hurt, he’s more than happy to oblige her.

    A Christmas Courtship

Severing ties with her former beau isn’t as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there’s Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What’s a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to the annual Christmas party at Appersett House and give him one more chance to win her? But this time there’ll be no false formality. This time they’ll get to know each other for who they really are.

  1. IdaliaT says:

I really liked Holiday by Gaslight, while I agree with Sarah that there are some issues with the background characters I find Ned and Sophie so delightful that I don’t really mind. Definitely a comfort reread for me around Christmas time!

  2. C says:

I recall Canadian Boyfriend being cute, but that the big secret conflict felt like something that shouldn’t have been a big deal but it somehow was because communication is hard.

  3. Laurel says:

It has been a while since I read it, but The Rising Series, of which The Beginning of Everything is the first book, is a bit more violent than the usual Kristen Ashley. I did enjoy the first two books, but the last two are kind of average. If I’m remembering correctly, it takes place in the same alternate universe that her Fantasyland series takes place in, but in the “bad” lands that are sort of mentioned in that series, but not visited.

  4. LML says:

To me, one of the interesting aspects of SBTB is reading the opinions other people have about books that I’ve also read. I found the MMC in Holiday by Gaslight thoroughly unlikeable from beginning to end. So I wonder, in this example, what I missed. But I don’t wonder enough to reread the book.

  5. EditChief says:

I agree with @C about CANADIAN BOYFRIEND, although I think I liked the book more than some of the others who have commented about it. I thought the FMC’s reasons for her big secret made some sense in the context of the story but the MMC’s reaction to the reveal of the big secret seemed less reasonable.

@LML – Same! Some books I enjoyed are panned by others and visa-versa.

  8. Kris Bock says:

A bunch of Julie Anne Long books are 1.99 right now. I like her Palace of Rogues series. I can’t read too many in a row because the arrogant hero who clawed his way from nothing too riches gets old after a while, but since my library doesn’t have them, I’m stocking up for when I need light reads.

  9. Nic says:

Would recommend Canadian Boyfriend on audio as the MMC is voiced by Joshua Jackson but the sheer number of times the FMC mentions MMC by his full name is…exhausting to say the least.

I adore Holiday by Gaslight, it’s such a great holiday/winter read.
