  • Blood

    Blood by Jen Gunter

    Author: Jen Gunter
    Released: January 23, 2024 by Citadel Press
    Genre:

    The New York Times bestselling author, internationally known ob/gyn, and internet superstar who has become the go-to expert for women’s health issues now takes on a topic that affects more than 72 million Americans every month, bashing myths about menstruation and giving readers the knowledge they need to make the best decisions for their bodies.

    Most women can expect to have hundreds of periods in a lifetime. So why is real information so hard to find? Despite its significance, most education about menstruation focuses either on increasing the chances of pregnancy or preventing it. And while both are crucial, women deserve to know more about their bodies than just what happens in service to reproduction. At a time when charlatans, politicians, and even some doctors are succeeding in propagating damaging misinformation and disempowering women, Dr. Jen provides the antidote with science, myth busting, and no-nonsense facts.

    Not knowing how your body works makes it challenging to advocate for yourself. Consequently, many suffer in silence thinking their bodies are uniquely broken, or they turn to disreputable sources. Blood is a practical, empowering guide to what’s typical, what’s concerning, and when to seek care—recounted with expertise and frank, fearless wit that have made Dr. Jen today’s most trusted voice in women’s health.

    Dr. Jen answers all your period-related questions, What exactly happens during menstruation? How heavy is too heavy? How much should periods hurt? and provides essential information about topics such

    * The impact of stress and health on the menstrual cycle
    * Menstrual migraines, PMS, and period diarrhea (yes, it’s totally normal)
    * Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and fibroids
    * Endometriosis and the latest treatments
    * The endometrium’s (the uterine lining’s) fascinating connection to the immune system
    * Different cultural perceptions of menstruation, and how they affect girls and women
    * Legitimate menstrual products, and the facts behind toxic shock syndrome

    Blood is about much more than biology. It’s an all-in-one, revolutionary guide that will change the way we think about, talk about—and don’t talk about—our bodies and our well-being.

    The latest by Dr. Jen Gunter!

  • The Getaway List

    The Getaway List by Emma Lord

    Author: Emma Lord
    Released: January 23, 2024 by Wednesday Books
    Genre: , ,

    The day of her high school graduation, Riley realizes two things: One, that she has spent the last four years trying so hard to be a Good Kid for her mom that she has no idea who she really is anymore, and two, she has no idea what she wants because of it. The solution? Pack her bags and move to New York for the summer, where her childhood best friend Tom and co-creator of The Getaway List ― a list of all the adventures they’ve wanted to do together since he moved away ― will hopefully help her get in touch with her old adventurous self, and pave the road to a new future.

    Riley isn’t sure what to expect from Tom, who has been distant since his famous mom’s scriptwriting career pulled him away. But when Riley arrives in the city, their reconnection is as effortless as it was when they were young―except with one, unexpected complication that will pull Riley’s feelings in a direction she didn’t know they could take. As she, Tom, and their newfound friends work their way through the delightfully chaotic items on The Getaway List, Riley learns that sometimes the biggest adventure is not one you take, but one you feel in your heart.

    Inescapably romantic and brimming with Emma Lord’s signature cheer, The Getaway List is an uplifting and romantic read that will settle into your heart and never leave.

    Lord’s YA romances have been anticipated on previous Hide Your Wallet posts!

  • Wild Life

    Wild Life by Opal Wei

    Author: Opal Wei
    Released: January 23, 2024 by Harlequin
    Genre: ,

    They’re walking on the wild side…

    The Plan was simple: find a cure for the cancer that nearly took her sister’s life. But for Zoey Fong, something about The Plan isn’t working anymore. Maybe it’s her unsuccessful research, maybe it’s burnout. But when a crucial tissue sample accidentally winds up in the hands of a very distracting—and disarmingly handsome—visitor, Zoey jumps at the chance to follow him home to retrieve it.

    Davy Hsieh’s rugged island estate is no manicured suburban park. His plan is simple: establish a legitimate animal sanctuary and embrace life as a hermit to make up for a sketchy past. Zoey invading his fortress of solitude should not, under any circumstances, be a romantic development.

    And yet it’s the single most invigorating week of their lives…when they’re able to set their many differences aside and embrace it. Stranded amid all manner of flora and fauna—including a semidomesticated cougar called Baby—Davy and Zoey first have to survive the island. Then they’ll need to take a leap of faith, maybe even trusting in each other, to save it.

    Aarya: A screwball comedy written by Ruby Lang’s pseudonym.

  1. Sarah says:

    Toxic by Sarah Ditum about how 9 women were treated by the paparazzi and media during the ‘long aughts’ and what that means for all of us.

    The Breakup Tour by Emily Wibberly and Austin Siegemond-Broka. Is it TSwift fanfic? Yes. Am I going to read it anyway? Also yes.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

    On the tbr this week: new HPs from two of my queens of angsty heartache: Caitlin Crews’s WEDDING NIGHT IN THE KING’S BED and Jackie Ashenden’s A VOW TO REDEEM THE GREEK, both releasing today. Karla Sorensen’s property-renovation romance, HEAD OVER HEELS (January 24). Ainsley Booth’s THE SCORING SECRET, blurbed as “You’ve Got Mail for the Tinder generation” (January 25).

  3. I absolutely loved Wild Life!

  4. Lisa F says:

    All on the TBR

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

    I just saw that Ainsley Booth’s THE SCORING SECRET (reference in my comment above) has been postponed until February 23. On the bright side, I saw that Maisey Yates—another of my favorite angsty-heartache queens—released a new HP today: THE ITALIAN’S PREGNANT ENEMY. With new HPs from Ashenden, Crews, and Yates, I’ll be spending the rest of the week riding the angst train all the way to heartache town!

  6. LML says:

    @D3, That’s uh, quite a title.

  7. Neile says:

    Amazon just published a set of six short stories called The Improbable Meet Cute Collecton. They’re in Kindle Unlimited with audio and currently on on sale for $0.99 each (and then the audio is free) or $1.39 each for audio separately. Or you can buy a collection but it currently costs more. The authors are:

    * Jasmine Guillory
    * Abby Jimenez
    * Christina Lauren
    * Ashley Poston
    * Sally Thorne
    * Sariah Wilson

  8. Carol S. says:

    I am always fascinated by the oddly specific titles of Harlequin Presents: An Heir for the Vengeful Billionaire, Christmas Baby with Her Ultra-Rich Boss!, Hired For the Billionaire’s Secret Son, His Housekeeper’s Twin Baby Confession. Some of them sound like Madlibs.

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

    @Carol S: those HP titles are designed to let readers know exactly which brand of operatic heartache they’ll be getting in the book. I’m at the point where I’ve read so many HPs, I just glance at the titles and say to myself, ah yes, secret baby, unplanned pregnancy, marriage of convenience, arranged marriage, impoverished heroine catches billionaire’s eye, poor little rich girl, must marry because of the terms of someone’s will or to please a dying parent, royal romance, sheikh romance, business rivals…well, you get the picture.

  10. ChefCheyanne says:

    Beastly weather. Using SAD Light daily but it’s a battle. Splurging on book load this week just to help with Hide Out and Blanket Fort. Bought entire set of Mick Herron British Spy Thrillers Slow Horses and entire set of Katee Roberts Neon God’s.

  11. Kolforin says:

    Not sure if I’m interested in FAEBOUND but I like its cover.

    The blank look on the nose-thumbing hero of THE GETAWAY LIST’s cover makes him look oddly like a figure from an old Egyptian or medieval picture.

    WILD LIFE has now put the Talking Heads song in my head.

  12. Ely says:

    @ChefCheyanne, I’m so sorry you’re experiencing ghastly weather, but any excuse for a blanket fort is a good thing! I would love to know your thoughts on Mick Herron because I’ve been eying Slow Horses for awhile now and have been hesitant to commit.
