First Love, Take Two
First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance where two exes become roommates. We featured this one on a previous edition of Cover Awe. Shana gave this a B-:
Readers who like to root for a couple who are up against a closed-minded community, and who sympathize with an anxious, and occasionally strident heroine, would enjoy First Love, Take Two. If you’re looking for a standalone romance, low angst, and a couple with stellar communications skills, this might not be for you. Either way, my fellow foodies will want platters of buttermilk biscuits and tacos at hand while you read.
On the verge of realizing her dream of being a doctor, Preeti Patel should be ecstatic. But between the stress of her residency, trying to find a job, and managing her traditional, no-boundaries family, Preeti’s anxiety is through the roof. Relationships and love aren’t even an option. Fortunately, Preeti’s finally found a new place to stay . . . only to discover that her new roommate is her ex.
Preeti never quite got over Daniel Thompson. Super-hot, plenty of swagger, amazing cook—the guy is practically perfect. And if it weren’t for their families, there might have been a happily ever after. But it’s hard to keep her sanity and libido in check when the man of her dreams is sleeping mere feet away. Can Preeti and Daniel find a way to stand up and fight for each other one last time . . . before they lose their second chance?

Drunk on Love
Drunk on Love by Jasmine Guillory is $1.99! I think this might be Guillory’s latest? There’s a Napa Valley winery setting and a one-night stand. Have you read this one?
An intoxicating and sparkling new romance by New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory.
Margot Noble needs some relief from the stress of running the family winery with her brother. Enter Luke: sexy, charming, and best of all in the too-small world of Napa, a stranger. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and Margot is delighted that she lucked into the perfect one-night stand she’ll never have to see again. That is, until the winery’s newest hire, Luke, walks in the next morning. Margot is determined to keep things purely professional, but when their every interaction reminds her of the attraction still bubbling between them, it proves to be much more challenging than she expects.Luke Williams had it all, but when he quits his high-salary tech job in Silicon Valley in a blaze of burnout and moves back to Napa to help a friend, he realizes he doesn’t want to tell the world–or his mom–why he’s now working at a winery. His mom loves bragging about her successful son–how can he admit that the job she’s so proud of broke him? Luke has no idea what is next for him, but one thing is certain: he wants more from the incredibly smart and sexy woman he hooked up with–even after he learns she’s his new boss. But even if they can find a way to be together that wouldn’t be an ethical nightmare, would such a successful woman really want a tech-world dropout?
Set against a lush backdrop of Napa Valley wine country, nothing goes to your head as fast as a taste of love–even if it means changing all your plans.

The Silent Companions
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell is $2.99! If you want to be creeped out, Purcell is a good option. Her books have a Gothic historical fiction feel to them, but I highly suggest trigger warnings.
“If The Silent Companions lands on your night table, don’t plan on leaving your bed anytime soon.” —Lyndsay Faye, bestselling author of Jane Steele
When newly widowed Elsie is sent to see out her pregnancy at her late husband’s crumbling country estate, what greets her is far from the life of wealth and privilege she was expecting . . .
When Elsie married handsome young heir Rupert Bainbridge, she believed she was destined for a life of luxury. But with her husband dead just weeks after their marriage, her new servants resentful, and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie has only her husband’s awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks. Inside her new home lies a locked door, beyond which is a painted wooden figure—a silent companion—that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself. The residents of the estate are terrified of the figure, but Elsie tries to shrug this off as simple superstition—that is, until she notices the figure’s eyes following her.A Victorian ghost story that evokes a most unsettling kind of fear, The Silent Companions is a tale that creeps its way through the consciousness in ways you least expect—much like the companions themselves.

Silence for the Dead
Silence for the Dead by Simone St. James is $2.99! We mentioned this on a previous Hide Your Wallet, but technically it was a re-release with an updated cover. Elyse is a huge fan of St. James writing and her books are often a mix of paranormal, mystery, and a touch of horror.
“Portis House emerged from the fog as we approached, showing itself slowly as a long, low shadow….”
In 1919, Kitty Weekes, pretty, resourceful, and on the run, falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House—its plaster is crumbling, its plumbing makes eerie noises, and strange breaths of cold waft through the empty rooms. It’s known that the former occupants left abruptly, but where did they go? And why do the patients all seem to share the same nightmare, one so horrific that they dare not speak of it?
Kitty finds a dangerous ally in Jack Yates, an inmate who may be a war hero, a madman… or maybe both. But even as Kitty and Jack create a secret, intimate alliance to uncover the truth, disturbing revelations suggest the presence of powerful spectral forces. And when a medical catastrophe leaves them even more isolated, they must battle the menace on their own, caught in the heart of a mystery that could destroy them both.

The Silent Companions is creepy and unsettling. I read it a few years ago and remember having to put it down a few times because I was getting a major case of the eebie jeebies. Might be time for a reread.
Lavender’s Blue by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer is 99p on Amazon & Kobo.
I know it wasn’t very positively reviewed, but I still have a great deal of affection for the older Crusie books. I might try it while it’s less than a quid, and will consider the comments and possibly do some skim-reading.
$2.49:
The Setup (Lake Bittersweet) by Jennifer Bernard — lovely small-town romance set in Alaska
@Empress I enjoy everything Jennifer Crusie writes and the Liz Danger series were no exception. I even got into the professional soldier’s take on small town policing, probably due to Bob Mayer’s contribution to the books. I find Crusie compulsively readable so I gobbled up all three books in the series. The characters think and evolve with the plot, the dialog is always great that the twists and turns kept me going. These days I switch back and forth between reading the ebooks and listening to the audio, which my library makes easy to do. If you’re a Crusie fan I think you’ll enjoy them.
Tho there’s no Kobo link above for THE SILENT COMPANIONS, it is on sale there.

I discovered Simone St. James when SBTB recommended The Haunting of Maddy Clare. I gobbled up her other books and have pounced on every new one ever since. She can really create an atmosphere in her books. Love the stories and the characters. I wasn’t too sure, going in, that I was going to like Silence for the Dead – the heroine has been through a lot and it shows – but I loved it. Have subsequently listened to the audiobook more than once.
