I enjoyed the complexity of the characters, and I was especially intrigued by Isobel, whose inner life is so opaque to her sister, and yet clearly quite well-developed. There’s a lot of heat and sensuality in the book, and some lovely moments of humour. These are all really big positives.

I love Half a Soul so much. There’s no sex but I was still swooning. I think almost literally—there was this one moment toward the end where a thing happens, and my heart did this weird jump and I was so happy and dizzy with excitement and not breathing.
I did not think of the book as YA. The narrator has a special (magical) condition that causes her to see the world a unique way, which might be seen as child-like, but she’s still an adult (or at least an adult by historical romance novel standards—having a season in London and getting married). In fact, she has to work really hard to maintain her autonomy because of how people treat her because of her condition.
