    Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld

RECOMMENDED: Romantic Comedy by Cutis Sittenfeld is $1.99! I’m really hoping this isn’t a leftover deal from yesterday. Elyse gave this one an A:

I really recommend this book for fans of celebrity romance, but also for readers who just want a funny, witty contemporary romance.

A comedy writer thinks she’s sworn off love, until a dreamily handsome pop star flips the script on all her assumptions. Romantic Comedy is a hilarious, observant and deeply tender novel from New York Times–bestselling author Curtis Sittenfeld.

Sally Milz is a sketch writer for “The Night Owls,” the late-night live comedy show that airs each Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she’s long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life.

But when Sally’s friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actor who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show—and in society at large—who’ve gotten romantically involved with incredibly beautiful and accomplished women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch called the “Danny Horst Rule,” poking fun at this phenomenon while underscoring how unlikely it is that the reverse would ever happen for a woman.

Enter Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation with a reputation for dating models, who signed on as both host and musical guest for this week’s show. Dazzled by his charms, Sally hits it off with Noah instantly, and as they collaborate on one sketch after another, she begins to wonder whether there might actually be sparks flying. But this isn’t a romantic comedy; it’s real life. And in real life, someone like him would never date someone like her…right?

With her keen observations and trademark ability to bring complex women to life on the page, Sittenfeld explores the neurosis-inducing and heart-fluttering wonder of love, while slyly dissecting the social rituals of romance and gender relations in the modern age.

  • Red, White & Royal Blue

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This one is probably on sale because of the recent exciting movie news and I know many of you loved this one. Aarya gave this one a C- because she found the political world building too much of a distraction.

A big-hearted romantic comedy in which the First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends…

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

  • Love at First

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

Love at First by Kate Clayborn is $2.99 and is a KDD! Clayborn is an autobuy author for some of the Bitchery. Catherine gave this one a B:

Love at First is a beautiful book and worth the painful beginnings – but if you’re feeling fragile, too, maybe proceed with caution.

A sparkling and tender novel from the acclaimed author of Love Lettering, full of bickering neighbors, surprise reunions, and the mysterious power of love that fans of Christina Lauren, Sarah Hogle, and Emily Henry will adore.

Sixteen years ago, a teenaged Will Sterling saw—or rather, heard—the girl of his dreams. Standing beneath an apartment building balcony, he shared a perfect moment with a lovely, warm-voiced stranger. It’s a memory that’s never faded, though he’s put so much of his past behind him. Now an unexpected inheritance has brought Will back to that same address, where he plans to offload his new property and get back to his regular life as an overworked doctor. Instead, he encounters a woman, two balconies above, who’s uncannily familiar . . .

No matter how surprised Nora Clarke is by her reaction to handsome, curious Will, or the whispered pre-dawn conversations they share, she won’t let his plans ruin her quirky, close-knit building. Bound by her loyalty to her adored grandmother, she sets out to foil his efforts with a little light sabotage. But beneath the surface of their feud is an undeniable connection. A balcony, a star-crossed couple, a fateful meeting—maybe it’s the kind of story that can’t work out in the end. Or maybe, it’s the perfect second chance . . .

  • A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Emma Southon

A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Emma Southon is $4.99 and a KDD! Kiki mentioned this one on a recent Hide Your Wallet. If you’re interested, your library hold list is too long, and/or you have Kindle credits to spend, now’s your chance to pick this one up.

An entertaining and informative look at the unique culture of crime, punishment, and killing in Ancient Rome.

In Ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common—murder. Romulus killed Remus to found the city, Caesar was assassinated to save the Republic. Caligula was butchered in the theater, Claudius was poisoned at dinner, and Galba was beheaded in the Forum. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered.

But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum , Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside Ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life, death, and what it means to be human.

  1. Nancy says:

I loved Romantic Comedy. It was funny and romantic and the details about working on a fictional SNL were great. I would also give a much better grade to Red, White and Royal Blue. The political details made the world seem lived in. I would give it an A

  2. Musical Trees says:

    Ditto @Nancy!

I loved ROMANTIC COMEDY. It was an extremely funny take on SNL. The Danny Horst rule is so true, so it was a lot of fun when the author turned this idea on its head. I also enjoyed the level of detail about how the show runs. The author definitely did her homework there.

RED, WHITE, AND ROYAL BLUE is such a lovely book. It came out when I need a presidential fantasy very desperately, but I also enjoyed re-reading it in preparation for watching the Netflix movie this year. If you like the movie, the book (as per usual!) is even better with more details and more time to get to know the characters. There is a sweetness to the MCs in the book that is just great.
