I love romantic suspense, but they can sometimes be a little light on the suspense and a little heavy on the romance for me. The mystery plot in this book is strong enough to stand on its own, but my god, does the romance sweeten the deal.
Everett Larkin works for the Cold Case Squad: an elite—if understaffed and overworked—group of detectives who solve the forgotten deaths of New York City. Larkin is different from others, but his deduction skills are unmatched and memory for minute details unparalleled.
So when a spring thunderstorm uproots a tree in Madison Square Park, unearthing a crate with human remains inside, the best Cold Case detective is assigned the job. And when a death mask, like those prominent during the Victorian era, is found with the body, Larkin requests assistance from the Forensic Artist Unit and receives it in the form of Detective Ira Doyle, his polar opposite in every way.

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald is $2.99 and is a KDD! Sarah picked this for January 2016’s Hide Your Wallet. Other readers said the book does a great job of creating a sense of place. However, some felt there was a lot of repetition in the book and the interactions felt forced. We also had a great guest review of this one!
This is a book about books. All sorts of books, from Little Women and Harry Potter to Jodi Picoult and Jane Austen, from to Stieg Larsson to Joyce Carol Oates to Proust. It’s about the joy and pleasure of books, about learning from and escaping into them, and possibly even hiding behind them. It’s about whether or not books are better than real life.
It’s also a book about a Swedish girl called Sara, her elderly American penfriend Amy and what happens when you land a very different kind of bookshop in the middle of a town so broken it’s almost beyond repair.

I did not share the same perspective on the cheating in MADISON SQUARE MURDERS as the Lara—yes, the marriage is clearly on the rocks, but Everett keeps ignoring his husband’s calls and repeatedly blows off his attempts to talk about what’s going on in their marriage. Yes, Larkin is a much better fit for him, but Everett is being an unaccountable twit, IMO. It’s the first in a series, but I have no intention of reading more.
I agreed with Lara’s take on the cheating in MADISON SQUARE MURDERS. IMO, Everett has given up on talking to his husband because it doesn’t do any good. As he says, “people don’t want to know.” I resonate with that so hard. Even family members get tired of hearing how you really are when you have a chronic illness. Most expect you to be over whatever it is by now. They don’t really understand the “chronic” part.
“Madison Square Murders” sucked me in on the sample, so I bought it. I’m in the mood for something different from my usual romances, and I almost never read mysteries. Also sent my friend the link because I knew it was right up her alley.

@MaryK—I totally get what you’re saying but from a narrative perspective, all Everett would have had to do was say, “I’m sorry, this isn’t working,” or “I’ve met someone else.” I just can’t countenance the “ghosting your husband and cheating on him” angle in a romance.
I read all 3 books in the Memento Mori series in the last 24 hours and pre-ordered book 4 (which isn’t out until next May). I need more recs for queer romantic suspense now.

I have not read Momento Mori yet, but loved C.S. Poe’s other series Snow and Winter, and for another cold case series I really loved S.E. Harmon’s Spectral Files. Also might be worth looking at: Lissa Kasey’s Simply Crafty series, and Alice Winter’s In the Mind series.
Rhys Ford also has some great mystery/suspense series, and if humor/fluffy mm rom mysteries are an option, AJ Sherwood is great.
