  • The Portrait of a Duchess

The Portrait of a Duchess by Scarlett Peckham

The Portrait of a Duchess by Scarlett Peckham is $2.99! This is book two in the Society of Sirens historical romance series. However, I’ve heard it’s a disappointing installment from Peckham. Also I think I saw this as a Kindle Daily Deal last week, so this price could expire soon.

The scandalous women of the Society of Sirens are back with an explosive secret…their ranks include a duchess in disguise.

Once upon a time she married in secret…

An activist painter of radicals and harlots, Cornelia Ludgate dismisses love and marriage as threats to freedom. But when an inheritance gives her the chance to fund the cause of women’s rights—on the condition she must wed—she is forced to reveal a secret: she’s already married. To a man she hasn’t seen for twenty years.

Oh…and her husband is a duke.

A horse breeder with a clandestine taste for revolution, Rafe Goodwood never expected to become a duke. But now that the title is his, he is plotting to shock the ruling class with ambitions of reform—and reveal the infamous Cornelia is his duchess. That just presents one problem: he must not fall in love with her—again.

Now they must resist the temptation to rekindle an affair…

Although determined not to sacrifice her principles for passion, Cornelia is still drawn to the man whose very being threatens her independence. Hurt too many times, Rafe can’t risk love again—especially with the woman who once shattered his heart. But a conspiracy to upend the inequalities of the aristocracy bring Cornelia and Rafe closer, forcing them to finally decide what—and who—they hold dear.

  • The Haunting of Brynn Wilder

The Haunting of Brynn Wilder by Wendy Webb

The Haunting of Brynn Wilder by Wendy Webb is currently $2.49 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Elyse featured this book in November’s Hide Your Wallet saying it “sounded delightfully spooky.” Have you read this? Did you need an explainer for the ending?

After a devastating loss, Brynn Wilder escapes to Wharton, a tourist town on Lake Superior, to reset. Checking into a quaint boardinghouse for the summer, she hopes to put her life into perspective. In her fellow lodgers, she finds a friendly company of strangers: the frail Alice, cared for by a married couple with a heartbreaking story of their own; LuAnn, the eccentric and lovable owner of the inn; and Dominic, an unsettlingly handsome man inked from head to toe in mesmerizing tattoos.

But in this inviting refuge, where a century of souls has passed, a mystery begins to swirl. Alice knows things about Brynn, about all of them, that she shouldn’t. Bad dreams and night whispers lure Brynn to a shuttered room at the end of the hall, a room still heavy with a recent death. And now she’s become irresistibly drawn to Dominic—even in the shadow of rumors that wherever he goes, suspicious death follows.

In this chilling season of love, transformation, and fear, something is calling for Brynn. To settle her past, she may have no choice but to answer.

  • Prince of Air and Darkness

Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant

Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant is $2.99 and another KDD! This is a gay fantasy romance with a royal fae hero and a magical human. Lots of catnip here with forced proximity and enemies to lovers. It seems like this is on the line of new adult and the magical school being more like a college, with the characters in their early twenties.

Phineas Smith has been cursed with a power no one could control.

Roark Lyne is his worst enemy and his only hope.

The only human student at Mather’s School of Magick, Phineas Smith has a target on his back. Born with the rare ability to tap into unlimited magick, he finds both Faerie Courts want his allegiance—and will do anything to get it.

They don’t realize he can’t levitate a feather, much less defend the Faerie Realm as it slips into civil war.

Unseelie Prince Roark Lyne, Phineas’s roommate—and self-proclaimed arch nemesis—is beautiful and brave and a pain in the ass. Phineas can’t begin to sort through their six years of sexual tension masquerading as mutual dislike. But Roark is also the only one able to help Finn tame his magick.

Trusting Roark’s mysterious motives may be foolish; not accepting his temporary protection would be deadly.

Caught in the middle of the impending war, Phineas and Roark forge a dangerous alliance. And as the walls between them crumble, Phineas realizes that Roark isn’t the monster he’d imagined. But their growing intimacy threatens to expose a secret that could either turn the tide of the war…or destroy them both.

  • The Unfit Heiress

The Unfit Heiress by Audrey Clare Farley

The Unfit Heiress by Clare Audrey Farley is $1.99! I mentioned this non-fiction title on a previous Get Rec’d and definitely suggest it for people who love Old Hollywood settings and family scandals. However, it is incredibly sad and does involve the removal of a woman’s bodily autonomy, which might not be something you want to dig into right now.

For readers of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and The Phantom of Fifth Avenue, a page-turning drama of fortunes, eugenics and women’s reproductive rights framed by the sordid court battle between Ann Cooper Hewitt and her socialite mother.

At the turn of the twentieth century, American women began to reject Victorian propriety in favor of passion and livelihood outside the home. This alarmed authorities, who feared certain “over-sexed” women could destroy civilization if allowed to reproduce and pass on their defects. Set against this backdrop, The Unfit Heiress chronicles the fight for inheritance, both genetic and monetary, between Ann Cooper Hewitt and her mother Maryon.

In 1934, aided by a California eugenics law, the socialite Maryon Cooper Hewitt had her “promiscuous” daughter declared feebleminded and sterilized without her knowledge. She did this to deprive Ann of millions of dollars from her father’s estate, which contained a child-bearing stipulation. When a sensational court case ensued, the American public was captivated. So were eugenicists, who saw an opportunity to restrict reproductive rights in America for decades to come.

This riveting story unfolds through the brilliant research of Audrey Clare Farley, who captures the interior lives of these women on the pages and poses questions that remain relevant today: What does it mean to be “unfit” for motherhood? In the battle for reproductive rights, can we forgive the women who side against us? And can we forgive our mothers if they are the ones who inflict the deepest wounds?

Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller is on sale for $2.99!

  2. Karin says:

Horrifying story about Ann Hewitt. The Hewitts and Coopers were big names in my hometown. My elementary school was named after Ann’s Aunt Eleanor; Eleanor and her sister Sarah were the founders of the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in NYC. Her great-grandfather founded Cooper Union College, and her great uncle was the Mayor of New York. All the wealth and privilege didn’t help Ann.

On sale today at Amazon US/UK.

GOLDEN by Shannon Mayer is .99. A werewolf is turned into a golden retriever and stuck in an animal shelter. I am here for it.

IN THE LIKELY EVENT by Rebecca Yarros is 4.99 US/2.99 UK. Of possible interest for US readers is the (new to me) Amazon Reader Favorites Promo: Buy this book for $4.99, receive a $3.00 credit toward the purchase of another Favorite (currently there are 50 books, haven’t checked them all, but something to think about.)

A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL (Grumpy Devils #1) by Elizabeth O’Roark is .99 US only. Favorably reviewed or mentioned here, iirc.

THE SISTERS and THE ROOMMATE by Dervla McTiernan, 1.99 US only. Two short prequels (200 pages total) in the Cormac O’Reilly series, set this time in Dublin and featuring Carrie Ryan, ten years before her posting in Galway.

So I went looking at the Amazon Favorites promo that @Darlynne mentioned and found a series of short stories called THE FAR REACHES collection. Each short story is about 25-50 pages long, and all are currently US$0.99. The authors include Veronica Roth, Rebecca Roanhorse, Ann Leckie, Nnedi Okorafor and John Scalzi. I have no idea how much romance there is in any of these stories, but my goodness what a list of authors! These all also seem to be eligible for the $3.00 credit.

  7. Nyx says:

I loved The Haunting of Brynn Wilder. Spooky, twisty, and oddly comforting. I’ve since read several more of Webb’s books and refer to them as “cozy gothic.” Brynn Wilder is the best, imo, but they’re all good to one degree or another.
