The Siren of Sussex
The Siren of Sussex by Mimi Matthews is $1.99! This is also a KDD! This is book one in Matthews’ new series, The Belles of London. The description definitely piques my interest, but I feel like Matthews books don’t get as sexy for me as I want them.
Victorian high society’s most daring equestrienne finds love and an unexpected ally in her fight for independence in the strong arms of London’s most sought after and devastatingly handsome half-Indian tailor.
Evelyn Maltravers understands exactly how little she’s worth on the marriage mart. As an incurable bluestocking from a family tumbling swiftly toward ruin, she knows she’ll never make a match in a ballroom. Her only hope is to distinguish herself by making the biggest splash in the one sphere she excels: on horseback. In haute couture. But to truly capture London’s attention she’ll need a habit-maker who’s not afraid to take risks with his designs—and with his heart.
Half-Indian tailor Ahmad Malik has always had a talent for making women beautiful, inching his way toward recognition by designing riding habits for Rotten Row’s infamous Pretty Horsebreakers—but no one compares to Evelyn. Her unbridled spirit enchants him, awakening a depth of feeling he never thought possible.
But pushing boundaries comes at a cost and not everyone is pleased to welcome Evelyn and Ahmad into fashionable society. With obstacles spanning between them, the indomitable pair must decide which hurdles they can jump and what matters most: making their mark or following their hearts?

The Unexpected Duchess
The Unexpected Duchess by Valerie Bowman is $3.99! This is the first book in her Playful Brides series. In this romance, the heroine is getting in the way of the hero wooing a girl to fulfill part of a promise to a dying friend. Readers compared the book to Cyrano de Bergerac with the twist, which sounds pretty neat to me. However, others felt it was too heavy on the drama.
Is there any greater surprise than falling deeply, madly in love?
In This Battle of Wits
Lady Lucy Upton’s tongue may be too sharp to attract suitors but her heart is good, and when her painfully shy friend Cassandra needs help she devises a brilliant scheme to help her discourage an unwanted suitor, the Duke of Claringdon. Lucy will hide behind the hedgerow and tell Cass just what to say to discourage the Duke of Claringdon…but it turns out that he’s made of sterner stuff than either of them anticipated. And Lucy is shocked to discover that tangling with the tenacious man is the most fun she’s had in ages.
Kisses Are the Best Weapon
Lord Derek Hunt made a promise to his dying friend to marry the demure Cassandra, and for a man who wants nothing more than peace and quiet after the horrors of war, she’ll make the perfect bride. If only the impudent Miss Upton will let him court the girl! Doing battle is the last thing on his mind, but bantering with Lucy behind the bushes is too tempting to resist. And the spoils of this war just may be true love…

The Bourbon Thief
The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz is $2.99! Readers loved the mystery and all the twists and secrets to this book. However, others found the ending a bit anticlimactic after all the build up.
From the internationally celebrated author of the Original Sinners series comes a brand-new tale of betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150-year-old mystery
When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it’s to discover he’s been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it’s property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows…no one except Paris.
In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. But the family tree is rooted in tainted soil and has borne rotten fruit. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. The Maddoxes have bourbon in their blood—and blood in their bourbon. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed.

I enjoyed THE SIREN OF SUSSEX. I find Matthews to be quite reliable (she writes GREAT creepy villains), but I think all of her stuff is closed door (or at least everything I’ve read which, per GR, is apparently 9 of her books.)

Definitely buy Siren of Sussex if you can!
I liked The Siren of Sussex, though for me the standout from that series (so far) is the second one: The Belle of Belgrave Square. Really looking forward to #3 as well! Mimi Matthews writes such great comfort reads.
Not a romance, but Neil Gaiman’s American Gods (The Tenth Anniversary Edition) is on sale for $2.99 at Amazon. A fascinating read, and much better than the TV show adaptation.
I loved The Bourbon Thief. Could not put it down.
Also $1.99:
– Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley
– Not without Risk (St. Simone Florida) by Suzanne Brockmann
Free: Texas Cowboy (Wishbone Texas Book 1) by Ann B Harrison
$2.99: Ready to Roll 3-in-1: A Troubleshooters Anthology with Free Fall and Home Fire Inferno (Troubleshooters Shorts and Novellas Book 9) Kindle Edition by Suzanne Brockmann
@Sylvia– saw that the main characters in Come As You Are are in their 40s & 50s so I snapped it up. Excited to read this so thanks for sharing!
@Cristie – same! All the reviews I’ve seen have been very positive.
The Siren of Sussex is closed door, but I thought it had great slow burn, and I loved that many characters were working class, all the equestrian talk, and the heroine’s sequel bait friends.
*The Siren of Sussex* also has a lot of detail about the history of (Victorian) fashion, which a co-worker of mine who’s interested in that especially appreciated. I had no idea until I read this book that riding habits from this period included a pair of matching trousers to be worn underneath, lest anyone catch a forbidden glimpse of ankle while the wearer is riding sidesaddle.
