Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is $2.99! know Carrie really loves this book (and the entire series, I believe). I really love the new minimalist cover designs. Readers really loved the scifi world building, though some admitted wanting more action in the first book of the Imperial Radch series.

A Coup of Tea by Casey Blair is 99c! I mentioned this on Get Rec’d after seeing many of you mention this on the comments. I’m judging a book by its cover, but it seems like this could be a cozy fantasy novel. For those of you who have read it, can you comment on the coziness?

One Day in December by Josie Silver is $1.99! This book was a big deal when it came out, but I was suspicious about whether there’s an HEA. Have you read this one?
A love story about what happens after you meet, or rather, don’t meet the one.

I am totally the audience for cozy fantasy… but they don’t all quite work for me. (As I’ve learned to my disappointment.) A COUP OF TEA totally worked for me, so I say fork over the $1 in case if works for you too… (It’s cozy, but it’s not shallow.)
I also enjoyed A COUP OF TEA.
I’ve tried to read Ancillary Justice several times, but sadly I never get far before putting it aside.
There is an HEA in ONE DAY IN DECEMBER, but a lot of readers didn’t like the journey. It was on the edge of too angsty for me, but overall I’d say it worked for me and I’ll read anything Josie Silver writes.
Just a heads up, Coup of Tea is showing up as unfound on the BN and Kobo links.
Ancillary Justice is marvelous – heartily recommended!
Cover comment on One Day in December, either that classic London Routemaster (the red bus) has somehow been reduced in size or the woman is unusually tall, as in extraordinarily tall, as in maybe 6’8″ which is tall for a woman. The things you end up knowing when your other half is a bus enthusiast . . .
Ancillary Justice was one of the best books I read the year it came out. The whole trilogy is great and made Leckie an auto buy for me.
I’d say A Coup of Tea is definitely cozy. I’m about halfway through and so far most of the action has involved the heroine, a former princess, finding a safe place to live and a job in a teashop, while learning to do things like cook and meeting lots of non-threatening people. It was slow for me at first but picked up with the additional characters and hints of more intriguing plot lines. Also, the romance has totally hooked me—it’s so relatable. And there are some obvious parallels to real-world issues (systemic racism, gentrification, the idea of providing aid versus helping people help themselves) that add depth. Assuming it doesn’t take a dramatic turn into violence and trauma, it’s cozy!
I am struggling a little with comprehension. It might be because of my general brain fog. The heroine uses a formal language, which makes sense since she was a princess, but even her thoughts are formal and I keep stumbling over them. There are lots of detailed bargains and decisions and assessments of actions that I can’t follow. Like there’s a scene where she meets a merchant and comes away thinking “He knows who I am, and I now know he’s a spy” and I can’t for the life of me figure out how she determined this. But other than that, I’m really enjoying it.
