Links: Knitting Scandals, Parody Songs, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses. It’s our first Wednesday Links of June! Happy Pride everybody!

Both my partner and I are queer people, so we’re trying to nail down our Pride plans. We’re very torn between going to a Pride celebration and seeing a coworker’s queer colorguard performance in a parade or honestly, being introverts and celebrating amongst ourselves in front of our AC unit. Warm temps in New England aren’t the kindest when you live on the second and third floors and don’t have central air conditioning.

Do any of you have Pride plans?

Sarina Bowen, along with a large collection of other authors, has contributed to a queer anthology for Pride month, with proceeds supporting various LGBTQIA+ causes.

Those who are entrenched in the knitting community may have already heard the news, but a knitting events organizer unexpectedly closed their business and has left many small business owner and hobbyists in a financial bind.

It’s Pride month and my heart goes out to all the queer people in places passing legislation that directly threatens their lives. I loved this essay from Florida author, Kristen Arnett, about loving a place that doesn’t seem to love you back.

500 Queer Scientists is a great resource for finding or networking with queer people in STEM, whether you want to find a role model for yourself or a young one in your life, or if you’re trying to find a speaker for an engagement.

I shared this on the SBTB Discord (if you’re a member of the Patreon, you get access to this awesome hangout space!), but I love this parody of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

That parody is the Introvert Anthem. Loved it!

  2. Escapeologist says:

Excellent parody, now I absolutely have to share this year’s introvert anthem from Eurovision.

If you somehow got dragged to a party, these guys will show you how to escape and have a better party at home. https://youtu.be/h5wfKv4p8uA

  3. Star says:

This is the most relatable song I have ever heard, and I say this as someone who loves possibly nothing more than dancing (but only with myself).

  4. Susan/DC says:

For those who complain that the civilized world is coming to an end, as exemplified by lack of respect for our betters and the preponderance of poop jokes, here’s evidence that these things have been going on for a long, long time:

If you like I Dont Wanna Dance wit Nobody, then you simply MUST listen to their Stacy’s Dad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WANlg297AHU Truly a masterpiece and my pride month anthem lol

  6. Georgina says:

Subradio do great parodies, but I also really like their original stuff. I’ve been bopping to 1990something in the car for the last couple of months. They look like they’d be fun to see live, too.

  7. cleo says:

I already got my Pride haircut and other than that, I’m planning to have a nice mellow Pride month.

I’m hoping to volunteer at the Youth space during our local Pride Fest, although I’m afraid I may have waited too long to actually reply to the “do you want to volunteer? email. I did it last year and had a blast (in spite of getting glitter paint on my good cargo pants, lol)

  8. denise says:

I had preordered Pride Not Prejudice. It hit my kindle when it went live.

  9. Shawna says:

Arnett’s essay –> . Her hope caught me off-guard, and I really needed it this Pride Month; thank you for sharing it.

  10. Carol S. says:

The alleged bankruptcy of Stitches/XRX (I say alleged because to my knowledge, there has been no bankruptcy filing yet) is fascinating. For those in the industry, it’s been common knowledge that the company has struggled financially for years. One reason I stopped teaching there was that I judged the risk of not being paid/reimubursed to be too high. Their business model, such as it is, involved paying for the current show with proceeds from registration for the next show — not a good strategy for long-term survival. For new stitchers and those not immersed in the industry, it very well may have seemed unexpected.

The story is complicated by the personalities of those who owned and ran the organization. You can read many allegations about them which I will not repeat here (some of which I know to be true and others I do not know). Industry trends, the pandemic and the internet were also factors.

What is unconscionable is throwing a virtual event and continuing to take registration and vending reservation money knowing this was coming. The fact that no bankruptcy lawyer has appeared and that the founders have scrubbed their social media also does not bode well.

  11. Em says:

FYI, the Pride Not Prejudice collection that Sarina Bowen tweeted about, she does not seem to actually have contributed writing to.
