  • Inda

    Inda by Sherwood Smith

RECOMMENDED: Inda by Sherwood Smith is 99c! We had a guest Squee from the Keeper Shelf about this one:

I read Inda for the first time in 10th grade, and it totally blew me away. It was different from anything I’d ever read, and it permanently altered the way I read (mostly by making me wayyy pickier). I adore this series, the characters, the world, everything.

Indevan-Dal is the second son of the Prince and Princess of Choraed Elgaer, destined to become his elder brother Tanrid’s Shield Arm-his military champion. Like all second sons, he is to be privately trained at home by Tanrid, the brother whose lands he will one day protect.

When the King’s Voice comes to summon Inda to the Military Academy, he might well feel foreboding, or even fear-war is imminent-yet youthful Inda feels only excitement. But there are things that Tanrid hadn’t prepared him for, and Inda will soon learn that the greatest threats to his safety will not come from foreign enemies, but from supposed allies within his own country.

  • Act Like It

Act Like It by Lucy Parker

RECOMMENDED: Act Like It by Lucy Parker is $2.99! If you haven’t read this yet, it was one of Sarah’s favorite reads in the past couple years. She says, “I mean, I could squee at you some MORE beyond my review but I think you’ve heard me already. I loved this book. You should read it. It’s delightful.” This one is part of today’s pages of romance deals.

This just in: romance takes center stage as West End theatre’s Richard Troy steps out with none other than castmate Elaine Graham

Richard Troy used to be the hottest actor in London, but the only thing firing up lately is his temper. We all love to love a bad boy, but Richard’s antics have made him Enemy Number One, breaking the hearts of fans across the city.

Have the tides turned? Has English rose Lainie Graham made him into a new man?

Sources say the mismatched pair has been spotted at multiple events, arm in arm and hip to hip. From fits of jealousy to longing looks and heated whispers, onlookers are stunned by this blooming romance.

Could the rumors be right? Could this unlikely romance be the real thing? Or are these gifted stage actors playing us all?

  • Torn

    Torn by Rowenna Miller

Torn by Rowenna Miller is $2.99! This is a fantasy novel with a seamstress main character. Carrie read this one and gave it a C+. The pacing was too slow for her, but it’s possible future books may pick up in momentum:

This book is the first in a new series. It has a lot of potential – good technical writing, multiple female characters, discussion of class and class mobility, clothes porn, and more. If other books pick up the pace, it could be great, but this first book was too slow to keep me invested.

TORN is the first book in an enchanting debut fantasy series featuring a seamstress who stitches magic into clothing, and the mounting political uprising that forces her to choose between her family and her ambitions, for fans of The Queen of the Tearling.

Sophie is a dressmaker who has managed to open her own shop and lift herself and her brother, Kristos, out of poverty. Her reputation for beautiful ball gowns and discreetly-embroidered charms for luck, love, and protection secures her a commission from the royal family itself — and the commission earns her the attentions of a dashing but entirely unattainable duke.

Meanwhile, Kristos rises to prominence in the growing anti-monarchist movement. Their worlds collide when the revolution’s shadow leader takes him hostage and demands that Sophie place a curse on the queen’s Midwinter costume — or Kristos will die at their hand.

As the proletariat uprising comes to a violent climax, Sophie is torn: between her brother and the community of her birth, and her lover and the life she’s striven to build.

  • A Curse of Queens

A Curse of Queens by Amanda Bouchet

A Curse of Queens by Amanda Bouchet is $1.99! This is book four of the Kingmaker Chronicles, which I enjoyed, but kicks off an adventure with a new couple. You  might be able to get away with starting here.

Discover an all-new adventure in USA Today Bestselling author Amanda Bouchet’s thrilling, white-hot fantasy series, The Kingmaker Chronicles!

The queen has been cursed, and no one knows who’s behind the plot to threaten the realm’s fragile peace. Desperate to help, Jocasta hatches a plan to find Circe’s Garden, a fabled island where she hopes to discover an antidote. But she can’t do it alone. She needs the strong arm and unflinching bravery of the warrior she’s loved since childhood—her brother’s right-hand-man and captain of the guard, Flynn of Sinta.

Together they can do the impossible. Yet with treachery brewing on Mount Olympus, one thing is clear: Thalyria and its new royals are still pawns in an epic game of power—one that might end in a War of Gods.

@flchen1: UNWRITTEN RULES is soooo good! One of my favorite books read this year. Highly recommended.

  4. flchen1 says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, I loved the whole series. I confess Unwritten Rules took me a bit to get into, but once I did, I couldn’t stop reading. And then I went straight into Fire Season, and then Diamond Ring couldn’t be released quickly enough. I’m very thankful to you and others who recommended it!

  7. Loramir says:

    Oh, good stuff today.

ACT LIKE IT was really good, though not an all-time favorite or anything. I remember enjoying it at the time but then a month or two later had to really think to remember much about it.

I haven’t read INDA but am grabbing that one. I stumbled across Sherwood Smith’s CROWN DUEL/COURT DUEL duet in my university library once and LOVED them – they’re up there with Robin McKinley and Tamora Pierce in my favorite YA fantasy list. Really fascinating worldbuilding, a kickass heroine, a great fantasy plot, and also a wonderful enemies-to-lovers romance. I’ve reread those two a zillion times but never actually read any of her other work, so I’m really intrigued to try this one.

I can also recommend a couple from @flchen1’s list – Aster Glenn Gray’s BRIARLEY is so SO good. There’s a SQUEE review of it on here that got me to buy it: https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/reviews/briarley-by-aster-glenn-gray/

It’s just a gorgeous, moving, beautifully-written WWII-era m/m adaptation of Beauty & The Beast. It’s not super long but it’s a frequent comfort reread for me.

I haven’t read Amy Aislin’s GAME PLAN yet but her Stick Side series are some of my very favorite m/m hockey romances, both for the romances themselves and speaking as a major hockey nerd. She has great characters and often a found family vibe and I’ve loved all of that series pluis a few others of hers, so I’ll be grabbing Game Plan for sure.

  8. Bre says:

Act Like It is an all time favorite that I reread at least once a year. I wish Netflix would make it into a movie.

  9. Musical Trees says:

I have read Amy Aislin’s GAME PLAN, which is a follow on to the STICK SIDE series. For me, these were all excellent little bonbons: light, fast reads I knocked out in one evening a piece. Are they deep? Nope! Do I remember the story lines? Not really! (Although that may say more about me than the books, honestly.) Did I scarf them all up in one very enjoyable week? Yes I did!

Perhaps my favorite take on the M/M ice hockey genre is Avon Gale’s SCORING CHANCES series because it is just about as different from the other series as it can be while still serving up hot professional hockey players. These guys are not your millionaire NHL players. They are, instead, working for the ECHL, which is one step below the AHL, which is again one step below the NHL. So they are barely making rent to live out their dream of being professional players. In spite of the money woes and other quite serious issues covered, there’s a lot of joy and just plain old silliness to these books. Highly recommend.

The Great Alta series by Jane Yolen is on sale at Kobo for only $3.99. another really great fantasy series by one of the all time great authors in the genre. Part of why it was really interesting is because it’s a fantasy series where the “chosen ones” are actually only minor characters

  16. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@flchen1: I just finished the Hockey Ever After series (WINGING IT, SCORING POSITION, UNRIVALED) referenced in your post above. I enjoyed them very much. The stories are somewhat angsty m/m romances with gay and bi MCs (all of whom are professional hockey players), all with an opposites-attract vibe. Although each book focuses on a different couple, timelines shift and characters recur, so the books should be read in order. Highly recommended.

Anyone interested in BEFORE GIRL by Kate Canterbary (good book noise): if you’re an Audible member and buy the digital book, you can purchase the audio book for $1.99. The narrators are perfect, imo, and so funny. I went through the last three years of my Kindle purchases to see what other titles are available that inexpensively. I’ll be over in the corner listening; I can never die now.
