  • Devil in Spring

Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas

RECOMMENDED: Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas is $2.99! Carrie gave it a B+:

Devil in Spring was so delightful that I read it slowly because I had to take frequent squee breaks. I truly cannot sufficiently express how overjoyed this book made me. That said, I don’t think it will be everyone’s catnip, because the main character sometimes seems overly young and naïve, even given her character quirks.

    An eccentric wallflower…

Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she’s ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

    A cynical rake…

After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught-by a rebellious girl who couldn’t be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He’ll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil’s own bargain.

    A perilous plot…

After succumbing to Gabriel’s skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy-and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil’s bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven…

  • The Business of Blood

The Business of Blood by Kerrigan Byrne

The Business of Blood by Kerrigan Byrne is $2.99! This is book one in the Fiona Mahoney historical mystery series. It was recommended by Renee Ahdieh on the podcast and she mentions that it takes place during the time when Jake the Ripper was active.

London, 1890. Blood and death are Fiona Mahoney’s trade, and business, as they say, is booming.

Dying is the only thing people do with any regularity, and Fiona makes her indecorous living cleaning up after the corpses are carted away. Her childhood best friend, Mary, was the last known victim of Jack the Ripper. It’s been two years since Fiona scrubbed Mary’s blood from the floorboards, and London is no longer buzzing about the Ripper, but Fiona hasn’t forgotten.

And she hasn’t stopped searching for Jack.

When she’s called to a murder in the middle of the night, Fiona finds a victim mutilated in an eerily similar fashion to those of the Ripper, and only a few doors down from Mary’s old home. The relentless, overbearing, and irritatingly handsome Inspector Grayson Croft warns her away from the case. She might have listened, if she hadn’t found a clue in the blood. A clue that will lead her down a path from which there is no return. As a killer cuts a devastating swath through London, a letter written in blood arrives at her door, and it is only then that Fiona realizes just how perilous her endeavor is. For she has drawn the attention of an obsessive evil, and is no longer the hunter, but the prey. Fiona Mahoney is in the business of blood.

But she’s not the only one.

With intriguing twists, blood-chilling discoveries, and dazzling prose, USAToday Bestselling author Kerrigan Byrne shows that a woman’s work is never done, even when she is sleuthing out a serial killer.

  • Provenance

    Provenance by Ann Leckie

Provenance by Ann Leckie is $2.99! This could be a leftover KDD from yesterday. Leckie is an autobuy author for a lot of sci-fi fans and while this book is set in the same world as her previous trilogy, I wonder if you need to read those to understand this one. If you know, please leave your thoughts in the comments!

Following her record-breaking debut trilogy, Ann Leckie, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and Locus Awards, returns with a thrilling new story of power, theft, privilege and birthright.

A power-driven young woman has just one chance to secure the status she craves and regain priceless lost artefacts prized by her people. She must free their thief from a prison planet from which no one has ever returned.

Ingray and her charge will return to their home world to find their planet in political turmoil at the heart of an escalating interstellar conflict. Together, they must make a new plan to salvage Ingray’s future, her family and her world, before they are lost to her for good.

  • Rescue Me

    Rescue Me by Sarra Manning

Rescue Me by Sarra Manning is 99c! I mentioned this one on a previous Book Beat. One of my romance book club members mentioned this one. At the start of every meeting, we talk about books we’ve enjoyed recently, and they listed this one!

Margot and Will cross paths at the local dog rescue centre where – after a series of misunderstandings and a lot of consternation – they agree to foster Blossom (a staffy with a giant head, soft, floppy ears and kohl-rimmed brown eyes) together: one week on, one week off.

Margot and Will don’t get off to the best of starts: he thinks Margot is demanding and needy and Just So Much. And she thinks Will is emotionally unavailable, slightly brittle and very mistrustful. They’re both right.

But the more they bicker, the worse Blossom behaves, and they realise they have to form some sort of truce in order to dog-parent (or “pawrent” as Margot calls it, to which Will rolls his eyes) her together. It’s almost as if Blossom has plans of her own…

  1. Susanna says:

I would say you don’t need to have read the Ancillary trilogy to read Provenance. It’s set in the same universe, but in a distant location, and the events of that trilogy are only mentioned briefly in passing, if I recall correctly.

  2. flchen1 says:

Taryn Quinn’s Baby Daddy Wanted (Crescent Cove 5) is currently free. It’s a fun tropey series that leans into the “there’s something in the water”, LOL

  3. spinsterrevival says:

Devil in Spring is my ultimate comfort reread; I love how much Gabriel loves Pandora, and she’s the best neurodivergent rep I’ve seen in a historical (although I’m not sure if that was Kleypas’s aim, but it still works that way for me). Pandora and Beatrix Hathaway are my two favorite heroines from Kleypas (and they top most of my other faves lists too).

Queen’s Ransom by Layla Reyne is on sale for $.99. It’s the fourth in her Fog City series and is f/f.

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

I enjoyed Kleypas’s Ravenels series*, although I much preferred MARRYING WINTERBOURNE and DEVIL’S DAUGHTER to DEVIL IN SPRING.
