  • Rescue Me

    Rescue Me by Sarra Manning

Rescue Me by Sarra Manning is 99c! I mentioned this one on a previous Book Beat. One of my romance book club members mentioned this one. At the start of every meeting, we talk about books we’ve enjoyed recently, and they listed this one!

Margot and Will cross paths at the local dog rescue centre where – after a series of misunderstandings and a lot of consternation – they agree to foster Blossom (a staffy with a giant head, soft, floppy ears and kohl-rimmed brown eyes) together: one week on, one week off.

Margot and Will don’t get off to the best of starts: he thinks Margot is demanding and needy and Just So Much. And she thinks Will is emotionally unavailable, slightly brittle and very mistrustful. They’re both right.

But the more they bicker, the worse Blossom behaves, and they realise they have to form some sort of truce in order to dog-parent (or “pawrent” as Margot calls it, to which Will rolls his eyes) her together. It’s almost as if Blossom has plans of her own…

  • Cocaine Blues

    Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood

Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood is $1.99! This is book one in the Phryne Fisher Mysteries series. Elyse previously reviewed it and gave the book a B. In summary, she said that while the book was tons of fun to read, there were some things the TV show just did better, namely the costumes.

First in series from bestselling author, Kerry Greenwood

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, now streaming on Netflix, starring Essie Davis as the honourable Phryne Fisher

The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honourable Phryne Fisher—she of the green-gray eyes, diamant garters, and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions—is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia.

Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops, and communism—not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse—until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

  • Murder at the Brightwell

Murder at the Brightwell by Ashley Weaver

Murder at the Brightwell by Ashley Weaver is $3.99! This is the first book in the Amory Ames historical mystery series that Sarah recommends:

That’s a delightful series, not least of which because Amory is terrific, and the instability and questions of her marriage, which are slowly being resolved, is another mystery on top of each book’s crime being solved. If you like historical mystery series, that one is fun.

Amory Ames is a wealthy young woman who regrets her marriage to her notoriously charming playboy husband, Milo. Looking for a change, she accepts a request for help from her former fiancé, Gil Trent, not knowing that she’ll soon become embroiled in a murder investigation that will test not only her friendship with Gil, but will upset the status quo with her husband.

Amory accompanies Gil to the Brightwell Hotel in an attempt to circumvent the marriage of his sister, Emmeline, to Rupert Howe, a disreputable ladies’ man. Amory sees in the situation a grim reflection of her own floundering marriage. There is more than her happiness at stake, however, when Rupert is murdered and Gil is arrested for the crime. Amory is determined to prove his innocence and find the real killer, despite attempted dissuasion from the disapproving police inspector on the case. Matters are further complicated by Milo’s unexpected arrival, and the two form an uneasy alliance as Amory enlists his reluctant aid in clearing Gil’s name. As the stakes grow higher and the line between friend and foe becomes less clear, Amory must decide where her heart lies and catch the killer before she, too, becomes a victim.

Murder at the Brightwell is a delicious mystery in which murder invades polite society and romance springs in unexpected places. Weaver has penned a debut in the tradition of Jacqueline Winspear.

  • Out on the Ice

Out on the Ice by Kelly Farmer

Out on the Ice by Kelly Farmer is $1.99! Tara read this one and gave it a C-. To sum up, if you want more F/F sports romances, this one might be worth a try, but warns of some significant biphobia in the book and a conflict that dissolves.

Don’t miss this tender and funny contemporary romance from debut author Kelly Farmer.

Caro Cassidy used to be a legend.

During her career, Caro was one of the best defense players in women’s hockey. These days, she keeps to herself. Her all-girls hockey camp is her life, and she hopes it’ll be her legacy. Sure, her new summer hire is charming and magnetic, but Caro keeps her work and personal life strictly separate.

Amy Schwarzbach lives life out loud.

Amy’s as bright and cheerful as her lavender hair, and she uses her high-profile position in women’s hockey to advocate for the things she believes in. Ten weeks in Chicago coaching a girls’ training camp is the perfect opportunity to mentor the next generation before she goes back to Boston.

Letting love in means putting yourself out there.

When the reticent head coach offers to help Amy get in shape for next season, her starstruck crush on Caro quickly blossoms into real chemistry. As summer comes to an end, neither of them can quite let go of this fling—but Amy can’t afford a distraction, and Caro can’t risk her relationship becoming public and jeopardizing the one thing that’s really hers.

Yes to Out on the Ice. I gave it 4 stars. I watch women’s hockey both college and professional, so was happy to read a romance featuring athletes in a sport I enjoy.

  3. flchen1 says:

@regencyfan93, I actually don’t watch hockey, but I really enjoyed the whole series. I thought Kelly Farmer did a great job of making the sport a real part of the story and not just window dressing.

  7. ReadKnitSnark says:

I snagged IMPROPER CROSS-STITCH: 35+ PROPERLY NAUGHTY PATTERNS by Haley Pierson-Cox for $3-ish on kindle.

    Contains:
    FUCK—with flowers on each letter
    NOPE
VAGINA—spelled out with two pink flowers on each end
ZERO FUCKS GIVEN (disappointingly plain IMO)
I’LL CUT YOU—picture contains a knife, a cleaver, and root vegetables
FEMINIST (nice lettering but not badass enough for my liking)
PRINCESS NOT IN NEED OF RESCUE (again not badass enough for my cranky ass)
SQUAD GOALS. BRONTË AUSTEN DICKINSON PLATH (with portraits)
3 alphabets: sans serif, cursive, and line
    many others

I think my current favorites are the veggie pic “I’ll cut you” and Female Author Squad Goals. Totally worth the $2.99 plus tax (or VAT) IMO.

  8. Ulrike says:

I read three of the Amory Ames books, and I found the best of them to be merely mediocre. Here’s what I said about the romance in book 1: “Main character needs to grow a more effective backbone. Your husband doesn’t get to treat you like dirt for 5 years before deciding he’s ready for you to be a couple again. I kept waiting for SOME reasonable explanation and sufficient groveling, and this book gave us neither. The conclusion to the romantic element was quite unsatisfying.”

    The mystery also wasn’t good.
