  • If the Shoe Fits

If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy

If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy is $1.99! This came out in August and is a Cinderella-inspired retelling. It also has a reality show element. I’m very excited about this updated Disney princess series. The next one will be written by Jasmine Guillory and is a Beauty & the Beast retelling.

After having just graduated with a degree in shoe design, and trying to get her feet on the ground, Cindy is working for her stepmother, who happens to be the executive producer of America’s favorite reality show, Before Midnight. When a spot on the show needs filling ASAP, Cindy volunteers, hoping it might help jump-start her fashion career, or at least give her something to do while her peers land jobs in the world of high fashion.

Turns out being the only plus size woman on a reality dating competition makes a splash, and soon Cindy becomes a body positivity icon for women everywhere. What she doesn’t expect? That she may just find inspiration—and love—in the process. Ultimately, Cindy learns that if the shoe doesn’t fit, maybe it’s time to design your own.

  • Ancillary Justice

    Ancillary Justice by Anne Leckie

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is $2.99! know Carrie really loves this book (and the entire series, I believe). This is a KDD and I really love the new minimalist cover designs. Readers really loved the scifi world building, though some admitted wanting more action in the first book of the Imperial Radch series.

Winner of the Hugo, Nebula, British Science Fiction, Locus and Arthur C. Clarke Awards.

On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest.
Once, she was the Justice of Toren – a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy.
Now, an act of treachery has ripped it all away, leaving her with one fragile human body, unanswered questions, and a burning desire for vengeance.

  • Not Even for a Duke

Not Even for a Duke by A.S. Fenichel

Not Even For a Duke by A.S. Fenichel is $2.99 at Amazon! It’s available elsewhere, but not at the sale price. This seems like it has lots of yearning and pining. It’s also the fourth book in the series.

Finishing school brought four young wallflowers together. The perils of London’s marriage market inspired a pact to protect each other for a lifetime…

Survivor of a hellish marriage, Aurora Sherborne, Dowager Countess of Radcliff, is determined to never be taken in by love. With the other Wallflowers married and starting families, her West Lane residence is empty and lonely. What’s missing is a child of her own, to raise and make her house a home. Intent on marrying only to have children, Aurora wants nothing to do with romantic attachments.

The newly minted Duke of Cowin, Garrett Winslow, has known Aurora all her life, and loved her nearly as long. Recently returned from his travels abroad, he’s certain the infatuation was left in the past, but upon seeing the now-widowed Aurora, those feelings come rushing back.

Maddeningly, Aurora regards him as nothing more than her brother’s best friend. Determined to make her his, Garrett will use every tender weapon to seduce her—and prove she’s worthy of true love.

  • The Checklist

    The Checklist by Addie Woolridge

The Checklist by Addie Woolridge is $1.99! This is another book that seems more like fiction with romance elements than a contemporary romance. Woolridge’s second book, The Bounce Back, has been mentioned on the site.

In an energetic debut novel about personal and professional chaos, author Addie Woolridge introduces a multicultural cast whose exploits are redefining the modern rom-com.

Killing it at work? Check. Gorgeous boyfriend? Check. Ambitions derailed by an insecure boss? Sigh—check.

Things were going a little too well for Dylan Delacroix. After upstaging her boss on a big account, she gets dispatched to the last place she wants to be: her hometown, Seattle. There, she must use her superstar corporate-consulting skills to curb the worst impulses of an impossibly eccentric tech CEO—if she doesn’t, she’s fired.

The fun doesn’t stop there: Dylan must also negotiate a ceasefire in the endless war between her bohemian parents and the straitlaced neighbors. Adding to the chaos is a wilting relationship with her boyfriend and a blossoming attraction to the neighbors’ smoking-hot son.

Suddenly Dylan has a million checklists, each a mile long. As personal and professional pressures mount, she finds it harder and harder to stay on track. Having always relied on her ability to manage the world around her, Dylan’s going to need a new plan. She may be down, but she’s definitely not out.

  1. Emily B says:

In terms of plus-size heroine reality dating show themed romances, I feel like One to Watch was superior to If the Shoe Fits (not that there can’t be multiple dating show themed romances with plus size leads, just that both books make the fact that they’re plus size very much a part of the lead characters’ “brands”, because they’re both social media influencers of a sort, so the books share a lot of similarities once you add in the dating show setting). That said, I enjoyed If the Show Fits, but I did feel like the heroine was a bit young to be on a marriage as the end goal dating show (I know, I know, they rarely ever actually end up married, but 23 still seems very young!). The Guillory Beauty and the Beast retelling that comes next in the series was my least favorite Guillory I’ve read though.

  2. Ele says:

Ancillary Justice is one of the best sci-fi novels I’ve read in recent years. It definitely takes a while before the reader starts to get a picture of what is really going on. And anyone who approaches it thinking it is a romantic space-opera-type book will be in for some surprises. But if you like creative sci-fi, you may like this book a lot.

  3. Msb says:

    What Ele said.
Ancillary Justice blew my socks so far off that I never found them again. Plus, there’s tea!

  4. Tam says:

Anybody read the Fenichel? I’ve been re-reading old Regency favourites, but I find newer books so hit or miss.

The Fenichel cover is quite attractive!

  8. Wait, what? says:

I love the whole Ancillary series, I’ve re-read them once already and am thinking it’s time to read them again! It did take me a minute to get into them and understand what was going on, but they are well worth the time and effort. One of my favorite things is that she/her are the default pronouns for every character. It made me realize how much I depend on gendered pronouns to help identify characters. It is one of the aspects of the books that has really stuck with me, and continues to make me think.

  9. marjorie says:

I liked the Guillory Beauty and the Beast a lot (it’s set in the world of publishing, which is catnip for me; non-skinny heroine; in my mind the hero looked like young Jason Momoa; fun picking up on the Beauty & the Beast movie references in the text) — just an all-around low-stress read, a balm in stressful times. I am interested in If The Shoe Fits because Dumplin’ was so delightful. Weird that there are two fat-girls-on-Bachelor-like-shows books, but I didn’t love One to Watch, which I didn’t think was all that well-written and didn’t really interrogate the fundamental problem that shows like the Bachelor are problematic way above and beyond their lack of body diversity. I hope the Julie Murphy does a little better on that front.

  10. Penny says:

So…. has anyone else seen the TV movie If the Shoe Fits with Jennifer Grey and Rob Lowe? Its… not great, but every time I see this book title it reminds me of seeing that movie on TV 30+ years ago

  11. Escapeologist says:

I tried to get into Ancillary Justice again after seeing all the positive comments. Putting it dowm after a couple of chapters. The default she/her pronouns are fun, the worldbuilding is interesting, but I’m missing a connection with the characters. Feels kind of like Murderbot with a less human protagonist? This time of year everything new annoys me, I should stick with rereads until spring.

  12. Vasha says:

Breq is nothing like Murderbot — apart from being a nongendered AI in a human body; personalitywise poles apart. Personally, I love Breq a whole lot, but she doesn’t have immediate charisma.

  13. One of the Ms. M's says:

@Escapeologist I have to agree with Vasha that Breq and Murderbot are only alike on paper. I adore reading about Breq/Justice of Toren, whereas I kind of grudgingly identify with Murderbot. Breq has a long, slow journey towards connections and friendship, but it’s SO worth it.
