  • Murder on Cold Street

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas

SERIES RECOMMENDED: Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas is $1.99! This is the fifth book in the much-loved Lady Sherlock series. You should probably read this in order, but if you’re looking to collect them all digitally, this is a good price.

Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the USA Today bestselling series set in Victorian England.

Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’s friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited.

Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage, because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Charlotte finds herself in a case strewn with lies and secrets. But which lies are to cover up small sins, and which secrets would flay open a past better left forgotten? Not to mention, how can she concentrate on these murders, when Lord Ingram, her oldest friend and sometime lover, at last dangles before her the one thing she has always wanted?

  • The Awakening

    The Awakening by Nora Roberts

The Awakening by Nora Roberts is $3.99! This is book one is what I believe to be her latest series and looks to be a blend of contemporary fantasy and romance. Have you read it?

In the realm of Talamh, a teenage warrior named Keegan emerges from a lake holding a sword—representing both power and the terrifying responsibility to protect the Fey. In another realm known as Philadelphia, a young woman has just discovered she possesses a treasure of her own…

When Breen Kelly was a girl, her father would tell her stories of magical places. Now she’s an anxious twentysomething mired in student debt and working a job she hates. But one day she stumbles upon a shocking discovery: her mother has been hiding an investment account in her name. It has been funded by her long-lost father—and it’s worth nearly four million dollars.

This newfound fortune would be life-changing for anyone. But little does Breen know that when she uses some of the money to journey to Ireland, it will unlock mysteries she couldn’t have imagined. Here, she will begin to understand why she kept seeing that silver-haired, elusive man, why she imagined his voice in her head saying Come home, Breen Siobhan. It’s time you came home. Why she dreamed of dragons. And where her true destiny lies—through a portal in Galway that takes her to a land of faeries and mermaids, to a man named Keegan, and to the courage in her own heart that will guide her through a powerful, dangerous destiny…

  • Beginner’s Luck

    Beginner’s Luck by Kate Clayborn

Beginner’s Luck by Kate Clayborn is $1.99! Sarah gave this book a C- because she was hoping for some more depth in the book. However, I remember seeing the Bitchery recommend it in comments. This might be a Your Mileage May Vary situation. It also has a scientist heroine, though I don’t love the new covers for the series.

When three friends impulsively buy a lottery ticket, they never suspect the many ways their lives will change—or that for each of them, love will be the biggest win of all.

Kit Averin is anything but a gambler. A scientist with a quiet, steady job at a university, Kit’s focus has always been maintaining the acceptable status quo. A sudden windfall doesn’t change that, with one exception: the fixer-upper she plans to buy, her first and only real home. It’s more than enough to keep her busy, until an unsettlingly handsome, charming, and determined corporate recruiter shows up in her lab—and manages to work his way into her heart . . .

Ben Tucker is surprised to find that the scientist he wants for Beaumont Materials is a young woman—and a beautiful, sharp-witted one at that. Talking her into a big-money position with his firm is harder than he expects, but he’s willing to put in the time, especially when sticking around for the summer gives him a chance to reconnect with his dad. But the longer he stays, the more questions he has about his own future—and who might be in it.

What begins as a chilly rebuff soon heats up into an attraction neither Kit nor Ben can deny—and finding themselves lucky in love might just be priceless . . .

  • No Gods for Drowning

No Gods for Drowning by Hailey Piper

No Gods for Drowning by Hailey Piper is $1.99 at Amazon! It’s available elsewhere, but not at the sale price. I’m super curious about this one, as it’s a queer fantasy horror mystery. I love all of those descriptors.

IN THE BEGINNING, MAN WAS PREY.

WITHOUT THE GODS, THEY’LL BE PREY AGAIN.

The old gods have fled, and the monsters they had kept at bay for centuries now threaten to drown the city of Valentine, hunting mankind as in ancient times. In the midst of the chaos, a serial killer has begun ritually sacrificing victims, their bodies strewn throughout the city.

Lilac Antonis wants to stop the impending destruction of her city by summoning her mother, a blood god—even if she has to slit a few throats to do it. But evading her lover Arcadia and her friends means sneaking, lying, and even spilling the blood of people she loves.

Alex and Cecil of Ace Investigations have been tasked with hunting down the killer, but as they close in—not knowing they’re hunting their close friend Lilac—the detectives realize the gods may not have left willingly.

As flooding drags this city of cars and neon screaming into the jaws of sea demons and Arcadia struggles to save the people as captain of the evacuation team, Lilac’s ritual killings at last bear fruit, only to reveal her as a small piece in a larger plan. The gods’ protection costs far more than anyone has ever known, and Alex and Cecil are running out of time to discover the true culprit behind the gods’ disappearance before an ancient divine murder plot destroys them all.

Set in an alternate reality which updates mythology to near-modern day, NO GODS FOR DROWNING is part hunt for a serial killer, part noir detective story, and unlike anything you’ve ever read before.

  1. Ali says:

I don’t think I’ve ever read a Nora Roberts book, but I couldn’t resist trying the author’s books out with this one! I hope it’s good.

  2. Susanna says:

I enjoyed The Awakening, which is heavier on fantasy than romance (though the romance is indeed present). The second book was, IMO, too long. Haven’t been motivated to read the third yet.

  3. JoanneBB says:

The Kate Clayborn I keep seeing so I thought maybe it being on a sale was a sign. But I looked it up, and I bought it in 2018. The synopsis rings ZERO bells for me 🙁
I used to read ALL the Nora Roberts but I stopped after Year One.

  4. Kareni says:

Like @Susanna, I read The Awakening and the next book but not the third. I found them pleasant but not compelling.

  5. Musical Trees says:

I think Beginner’s Luck was actually my first Kate Clayborn read and I enjoyed it enough in 2019 to read the next two books in the series. Sadly, I don’t actually remember much about the story. Clearly it’s time for a re-read 🙂

  6. Msb says:

Really enjoy the Lady Sherlock books, especially because they focus on the hindrances to a woman “playing” Sherlock Holmes. The occasional verbal clangers in each book – anachronistic language – are annoying but not a deal breaker.

  7. flchen1 says:

The first five books in Yasmine Galenorn’s The Wild Hunt series are free; the next five are on sale.

Scored by Lili Valente is $.99.

  8. ReadKnitSnark says:

Sunday’s Kindle Daily Deals are full of gems I’m interested in (all $3-ish):

A MARVELLOUS LIGHT (The Last Binding, book 1) by Freya Marske
THE GRIEF OF STONES (The Goblin Emperor, book 3) by Katherine Addison
THE SPARE MAN by Mary Robinette Kowal

    Nonfic:
Dinner in One: Exceptional & Easy One-Pan Meals by Melissa Clark (This contains “Sheet Pan Thanksgiving” which I heard mentioned on NPR around American Thanksgiving last year and thought that this non-American might one day possibly have a taste of Thanksgiving…? Also, the selling point of this meal was that what if you have a craving for a taste of Thanksgiving in February—Wham, bam, Thanksgiving, Ma’am!)
Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything by BJ Fogg PhD

  9. Sandra says:

@ReadKnitSnark: Thank you! I don’t know about the others, but the Kowal is $2.99 at B&N as well. I had wishlisted that one when it came out, but it was too expensive at the time.

  10. Darlynne says:

UNMASKING AUTISM: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity by Devon Price is $2.99 at Amazon today. The book has been on the best seller list, which is not evidence of its value one way or the other, since publication.
A deep dive into the spectrum of Autistic experience and the phenomenon of masked Autism, giving individuals the tools to safely uncover their true selves while broadening society’s narrow understanding of neurodiversity.

  11. Darlynne says:

THEY COME AT KNIGHT, Yasmin Angoe’s second book in her Nena Knight series, is on sale at Amazon for $1.99. I read HER NAME IS KNIGHT and while “enjoyed” doesn’t address the extreme violence of Nena’s life, the story was fascinating. Must admit I’m vacillating on this one.

Finally, Audible US is having a First in Series Sale for members. Ends on January 12.

  12. Emily B says:

I really enjoyed the Clayborn, though the next two in this series were better. Part of what I enjoyed so much about the series though were the female friendships and how they support each other, which I think felt richer in books 2 and 3 because you already know the characters from the first one. All that said, I think Clayborn’s later stand-alones (Love at First Sight and Love Lettering) are even better than this series, and I’m really looking forward to her new release this year.
