  • A Morbid Taste for Bones

A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters

RECOMMENDED: A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters is $2.99! This is book one in The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series, which I remember Sarah enjoying. Here’s what she said:

This book and the next few books of the series got me through the scariest parts of early Quarantimes.

On an expedition to acquire a saint’s remains, Brother Cadfael instead finds intrigue and murder

It is 1137, and the ambitious head of Shrewsbury Abbey wishes to acquire the remains of Saint Winifred for the glory of his Benedictine order. Brother Cadfael is part of the expedition sent to the saint’s final resting place in Wales, where he finds the villagers divided over the Benedictines’ quest.

When the leading opponent to moving the grave is shot dead with a mysterious arrow, some believe Winifred herself delivered the blow. Brother Cadfael knows that an earthly hand did the killing. But he doesn’t know that his plan to root out a murderer may dig up a case of love and justice, where the waves of sin may be scandal—or his own ruin.

  • An Earl to Enchant

An Earl to Enchant by Amelia Grey

An Earl to Enchant by Amelia Grey is $3.58 at Amazon! This is the third book Rogues’ Dynasty series. I’m not super familiar with Grey’s historical romances. Have you read any of her books? What do you think?

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Amelia Grey brings all the charm and allure of Regency England in this sparking historical romance featuring:

    – A family dynasty in danger of falling apart
    – A secret someone is determined to keep buried
    – A lady willing to do anything to honor her family
    – And the handsome rake resolved to protect her

Miss Arianna Sweet’s beloved father discovered a formula that could be the cure for consumption. But before he could make his discovery known, he died suddenly and under suspicious circumstances. While determined to bring his formula to the attention of London’s prominent medical society, Arianna suffers a series of increasingly dangerous accidents and is forced to conclude that someone is after the formula, and her very life may be in danger.

Rushing to the countryside to her father’s old friend Lady Elder, Arianna is shocked to find that she must rely on that venerable lady’s grandson, Lord Morgandale—one of society’s most notorious and deadly handsome rakes…

  • Hotshot

    Hotshot by Julie Garwood

Hotshot by Julie Garwood is $2.99! This is book 11 in the Buchanan-Renard series. I haven’t read any of Garwood’s contemporary suspense novels, but readers say that Garwood’s writing is good whether it’s historical or contemporary. But there were other readers that felt bored by the lack of action.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood returns with a novel of family drama, suspense, and—of course—romance.

Peyton Lockhart and her sisters have inherited Bishop’s Cove, a small, luxurious oceanfront resort, but it comes with a condition: The girls must run the resort for one year and show a profit—only then will they own it.

A graduate of a prestigious French culinary school, Peyton has just lost her job as a food critic. Out of work and in a bad place personally, a year doing something completely different sounds wonderful.

There are countless challenges and too many people who want to stop the sisters from succeeding. Among them are Peyton’s contentious cousins, who are outraged that they didn’t inherit the resort, as well as a powerful group of land developers who have been eyeing the coveted beachfront property.

It’s soon apparent to Peyton that their efforts are being sabotaged, but she refuses to let the threats scare her—until she’s nearly killed. She calls on her childhood friend and protector, Finn MacBain, now with the FBI, and asks for his help. He saved her life once; he can do it again.

  • Moon Called

    Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

RECOMMENDED: Moon Called by Patricia Briggs is $2.99! This is the first book in the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series and I really loved this book. Admittedly, I’m not caught up in the series and have only read the first three or four books, so maybe someone can add some thoughts on how the series unfolds, whether good or bad.

Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy’s next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy’s connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water…

I love the Mercy Thompson series. Patricia Briggs is one of my few auto buy authors – I would read the phone book (yes, I remember phone books) if she wrote it. I also love the Alpha and Omega series, which is in the same world as the Mercy series and has some character overlap, but start with this book. If you like it, you have lots of books in both series to go through, and I will envy you having all of those great books to read for the first time.

Just a note: these books can be violent – they have werewolves, vampires, etc., and they are not the prettied up versions. People get hurt and people die, but the books are really wonderful.

I read the Cadfael books as they came out and they are lovely. They pack in a lot of interesting English history and info about monastic life, and have very kind hearts. Recommended for cozy fans.

  3. Chris k says:

Spoilers ahead : I used to love Patricia Briggs but she revealed in like book 10 that Adam voted for a trump like candidate and consistently votes “opposite” of Mercy. Then her interview with Jenny Nordbak on Wicked Wallflowers was *interesting*. It made me reevaluate the themes of the series and see them in a different light. Suddenly the use of Native American culture by a white author seemed …problematic to say the least. And don’t get me started in Bram as well as female werewolves and pregnancy, infertility etc. plus the on page rape of the heroine early on in the series.

  4. Kris says:

For any Cadfael fans, there’s 4 seasons on Britbox.

  5. Susan says:

I’m such a fan of Briggs books that I am planning to include the tri-city of eastern Washington in my travels this summer. No, I couldn’t find a Briggs tour of the area, but I did find a great blog about key settings in the book from a local fan. The series is definitely of the strong woman kicks butt gritty urban fantacy, which is my katnip (even though she doesn’t have a sword but a magic walking stick). I am not surprised that Briggs shares some perspectives from conservative eastern Washington. And this is a huge military town, too. I’m still rereading them.

  6. kkw says:

I like Cadfael fine, they’re a little too cozy for my tastes. The TV show was way too slow for me, but then I read faster than I can watch a show, so that’s probably just a me thing. I have a lot of friends who enjoy it.

A combination of things ruined the Briggs books for me, although I definitely enjoyed the first few when I read them. First of all I burn out on things I glom, and I couldn’t stop myself from reading them. The tiresome politics were absolutely part of my disaffection. Plus I absolutely cannot take anyone using alpha/beta/omega seriously anymore. Part of that is because the whole alpha wolf “science” is nonsense, based on wildly dated misconceptions, so it just makes the authors who use it seem ignorant. But also AO3 and the popularity of mpreg have just made it so I skip anything with those terms.

Not romance, but Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram Is $3-ish on kindle (KDD, Teachers’ pick). I heard about it on a knitting podcast and one of the hosts was raving about it. Check it out for yourself—kid feeling out of place, out of culture, dealing with depression, dealing with grandparents not understanding depression…

“for anyone who’s ever felt not good enough—then met a friend who makes them feel so much better than okay”

  13. Kay Sisk says:

If you like Cadfael, you might try Mel Starr’s Chronicles of Hugh De Singleton. 14th century. Hugh is a surgeon who solves mysteries and occasionally bucks the system. You’ll also learn about life then and watch Hugh mature and fall in love. There are 15 of these. Not exactly cozy mysteries, but not gruesome.

  14. Michelle says:

Tales of rapey content and appropriation have prevented me from reading Mercy Thompson.
