  • Neon Gods

    Neon Gods by Katee Robert

Neon Gods by Katee Robert is $2.24! This is the first book in the Dark Olympus series. This is close to the top of my TBR pile and I’ve heard so many good things. A friend read it and wished it were spicier. Are you a fan?

He was supposed to be a myth.
But from the moment I crossed the River Styx and fell under his dark spell…
    …he was, quite simply, mine.

Society darling Persephone Dimitriou plans to flee the ultra-modern city of Olympus and start over far from the backstabbing politics of the Thirteen Houses. But all that’s ripped away when her mother ambushes her with an engagement to Zeus, the dangerous power behind their glittering city’s dark facade.

With no options left, Persephone flees to the forbidden undercity and makes a devil’s bargain with a man she once believed a myth…a man who awakens her to a world she never knew existed.

Hades has spent his life in the shadows, and he has no intention of stepping into the light. But when he finds that Persephone can offer a little slice of the revenge he’s spent years craving, it’s all the excuse he needs to help her—for a price. Yet every breathless night spent tangled together has given Hades a taste for Persephone, and he’ll go to war with Olympus itself to keep her close…

A modern retelling of Hades and Persephone that’s as sinful as it is sweet.

  • Maggie Moves On

Maggie Moves On by Lucy Score

Maggie Moves On by Lucy Score is $2.99! This was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I’ve heard good things about Score’s contemporary romance, but I haven’t been in the contemporary mood sadly!

Can these opposites turn up the heat… without burning down the house?

House-flipping sensation and YouTube star Maggie Nichols can’t wait to dig into her next challenge. Arriving in tiny Kinship, Idaho, with only a cot and a coffeemaker, Maggie is prepared to restore a crumbling Victorian mansion in four months or less. She has her to-do lists, her blueprints, and her team. What she doesn’t have is time for sexy, laid-back landscaper Silas Wright.

The man takes flirtation to a whole new level. And he does it shirtless…sometimes pants-less. He and his service school-dropout dog are impressively persistent. But she’s not interested in putting down roots. Not when fans tune in to watch her travel the country turning dilapidated houses into dream homes. A short-term fling on the other hand could fit nicely into her calendar. After all, Maggie remembers what fun is like. Vaguely.

As their summer gets downright steamy, Silas manages to demolish the emotional walls she’s spent years building, sending Maggie into a panic. He’s the wrench in her carefully constructed plans. With the end of the project looming, she has a decision to make. But how can she stay when her entire career is built on moving on?

  • Mexican Gothic

    Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $2.99! I think Moreno-Garcia is an extremely talented writer and this one blends historical settings and horror. Have you read it? We also recommended it in our Horror Romance Rec League.

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico — and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find — her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and has an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

  • Husband Material

    Husband Material by Alexis Hall

Husband Material by Alexis Hall is $1.99! This is the follow up to Boyfriend Material. I was eh on this one, but then again, I’m not a huge fan of a series that features the same couple after they get together. Were you excited about this one?

    Wanted:
    One (very real) husband
Nowhere near perfect but desperately trying his best

In BOYFRIEND MATERIAL, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends…and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc’s feeling the social pressure to propose. But it’ll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from I don’t know what I’m doing to I do.

Good thing Oliver is such perfect HUSBAND MATERIAL.

I tried a Katee Robert and found it unspeakably stupid. I don’t remember which one, but probably this, given my Lore Olympus obsession. The writing was so bad I could feel my brain cells dying.
I really really like Boyfriend Material and Husband Material, but they’re not exactly romance novels so much as an incredible homage (and fix-it) to rom-coms. They’re closed door, which is not my favorite but it suits the characters and the style. I am not actually a fan of Huge Grant movies but in as much as if I had to choose I would take 4 weddings and a funeral over Bridget Jones, I preferred Husband Material.

  2. Msb says:

The list of books available for daily deals includes some great stuff, especially the Jemisin and Leckie.

    @kkw
Did you like Lore? I liked the idea and the theme but was really put off by the almost continual up-close-and-personal violence.

  3. Hannah Bloom says:

THE RIVAL BID by Reese Ryan is free! A contemporary set in real estate in Chicago, with a preservationist going head-to-head with a luxury developer.

  4. Bunnifur says:

Who Slays the Wicked, book number 14 in the Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries, is on sale for $1.99 on Amazon US today. I know a lot of people like this series, so I thought I’d give it a mention.

  5. kkw says:

@Msb I love Lore Olympus, if that’s what you mean. Most things I know of that are called just Lore are horror, and I am way too chickenshit to handle horror so I haven’t even tried. I actually quite enjoy (fictional) violence, somehow that’s filed visually in the same category as dancing in my head. Gore isn’t interesting to me nor is it a dealbreaker, but I’ve zero tolerance for creepiness, jump scares, or the anticipation kind of suspense.

  6. Jessica says:

I usually like Lucy Score books but I really disliked Maggie moves on. Silas’ flirting read more like sexual harassment and that just not appealing. Also very cookie cutter characters.

  7. Jiobal says:

Neon Gods didn’t really work for me, partly because there was too much sex and not enough plot. The plot bunnies/dogs and sequel bait characters didn’t help. On the other hand I’ll ready anything by Sarah Monette/Katherine Addison and Witness of the Dead is lovely.

  8. Erin says:

I enjoyed Neon Gods (and only loosely familiar with Greek mythology so more just in it for the entertainment than a critical eye), and then LOVED the following two books in the series so far. The couple/connection in Neon Gods wasn’t my favourite of the series (though I still enjoyed the book), but I found the world intriguing and I think it gets even better.

  9. Maite says:

I listened to the Neon Gods audiobook, and was more into the world-building than the protagonists. I LOVED book 2, Electric Idol. Think I finished it and started over, loved it that much. I have Wicked Beauty in TBR, but I might skip that one and read Radiant Sin as soon as it comes out.

  10. SandyH says:

I started Neon Gods and it was a DNF for me. Haven’t bought any others in the series.

  11. jj says:

Neon Gods was a DNF for me, too.

  12. Lynn S says:

Neon Gods and the other books in that series by Katee Roberts is available on Hoopla, in case you want to try it first. I haven’t read them but I do admire the author with all of her innovative ways of packaging and selling romance. There’s a good podcast here where she talked about it. Fascinating!

  13. flchen1 says:

RG Alexander has a significant part of her backlist on sale for 99 cents per title. Her writing is definitely on the hot side of things, but also emotional, if that makes any sense.

  14. Darlynne says:

Mick Herron’s eighth Slough House book, BAD ACTORS, is on sale at Amazon UK for .99 GBP.

  15. marjorie says:

I loved Mexican Gothic. It is TRULY gothic — atmospheric, mysterious, dreamlike, paranoid, and in the end an absolutely Grand Guignol-level gush of weirdness and horror (nothing too explicit; I too am chickenshit). I was liking it fine up until the ending, and then the completely unhinged over-the-topness absolutely delighted me. I learned a lot about colonial Mexico and mining, too. It’s one of those books I find myself thinking about a lot.

I liked Boyfriend Material a lot. A little overlong, but funny and endearing, with characters I enjoyed hanging out with. I am, as ever, reading this belatedly, but if it’s still on sale I’m in on the sequel.
