  • A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby

A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley

A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley is $1.99! This one underwent a cover redesign. I think it’s fine, though the baby carriage doesn’t look to scale. Have you read this one?

When headstrong West Indian heiress Patience Jordan questioned her English husband’s mysterious suicide, she lost everything: her newborn son, Lionel, her fortune—and her freedom. Falsely imprisoned, she risks her life to be near her child—until The Widow’s Grace gets her hired as her own son’s nanny. But working for his unsuspecting new guardian, Busick Strathmore, Duke of Repington, has perils of its own. Especially when Patience discovers his military strictness belies an ex-rake of unswerving honor—and unexpected passion…

A wounded military hero, Busick is determined to resolve his dead cousin’s dangerous financial dealings for Lionel’s sake. But his investigation is a minor skirmish compared to dealing with the forthright, courageous, and alluring Patience. Somehow, she’s breaking his rules, and sweeping past his defenses. Soon, between formidable enemies and obstacles, they form a fragile trust—but will it be enough to save the future they long to dare together?

  • The Highland Duke

The Highland Duke by Amy Jarecki

The Highland Duke by Amy Jarecki is $1.99! This is the first book in the Lords of the Highlands series, and features some forced proximity and the heroine who heals the hero. Readers loved the blend of action and romance, though some found the plot a little unbelievable.

She’ll put her life on the line for him . . .

When Akira Ayres finds the brawny Scot with a musket ball in his thigh, the healer has no qualms about doing whatever it takes to save his life. Even if it means fleeing with him across the Highlands to tend to his wounds while English redcoats are closing in. Though Akira is as fierce and brave as any of her clansmen, even she’s intimidated by the fearsome, brutally handsome Highlander who refuses to reveal his name.

Yet she can never learn his true identity.

Geordie knows if Akira ever discovers he’s the Duke of Gordon, both her life and his will be forfeit in a heartbeat. The only way to keep the lass safe is to ensure she’s by his side day and night. But the longer he’s with her, the harder it becomes to think of letting her go. Despite all their differences, despite the danger-he will face death itself to make her his . . .

  • The Last Astronaut

The Last Astronaut by David Wellington

The Last Astronaut by David Wellington is $2.99 and is a KDD! This is near-future sci-fi with a heaping dose of horror; I’m so curious about it. Readers recommend this if you’re in the mood for something creepy, but wished it were more character driven.

Sally Jansen was once NASA’s leading astronaut, but her final mission ended in disaster. Haunted by her failure, Jansen now lives in semi-retirement, convinced her days in space are over.

    She’s wrong.

A large alien object has entered the solar system and is now poised above the Earth. It has made no attempt at communication and has ignored all incoming transmissions.

At NASA’s request, Jansen must lead an expedition to the object in the hope of discovering its purpose. For all the dangers of the mission, it’s the one shot at redemption she always hoped for.

Yet when K-Space, a powerful corporation, launches its own rival mission intent on claiming ownership of the object and whatever lies within, what began as a mission to make First Contact becomes a desperate race against time.

As the object reveals its many mysteries, one thing becomes clear–the future of humanity lies in the hands of Sally Jansen. The last astronaut.

  • The Pages of the Mind

The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy

The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy is $1.99 and is another KDD! This is a fantasy romance with an arranged marriage. Readers loved the scholarly heroine, but found that the second half of the book had a very different feel than the first half.

    An Orphan’s Throne

Magic has broken free over the Twelve Kingdoms. The population is beset by shapeshifters and portents, landscapes that migrate, uncanny allies who are not quite human…and enemies eager to take advantage of the chaos.

Dafne Mailloux is no adventurer–she’s a librarian. But the High Queen trusts Dafne’s ability with languages, her way of winnowing the useful facts from a dusty scroll, and even more important, the subtlety and guile that three decades under the thumb of a tyrant taught her.

Dafne never thought to need those skills again. But she accepts her duty. Until her journey drops her into the arms of a barbarian king. He speaks no tongue she knows but that of power, yet he recognizes his captive as a valuable pawn. Dafne must submit to a wedding of alliance, becoming a prisoner-queen in a court she does not understand. If she is to save herself and her country, she will have to learn to read the heart of a wild stranger. And there are more secrets written there than even Dafne could suspect…

  1. Mrs. Obed Marsh says:

I DNF’ed A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby because I couldn’t get past how the heroine’s chapters were in first person perspective and the hero’s were in third person. It’s such a little thing, but it’s jarring and I don’t understand why people write that way.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

I feel like the re-do of the cover for A DUKE, THE LADY, AND A BABY still gives a false impression of what the book is going to be like/makes it feel fluffier than it is (the earlier cartoon version had the same problem.) I didn’t particularly enjoy the book (the first and third person toggling was so annoying; third person across the board would have been fine!), but there’s also really no conflict between the hero and heroine and the villain isn’t played for actual tension, just anxiety for the heroine.

  3. Kris Bock says:

That baby carriage looks like it’s floating. Now that book I might read!

  4. Wait, what? says:

Has anyone read the Jeffe Kennedy book? I have read and bounced off a sample of her The Mark of the Tala a couple of times, even though it should be right in my wheelhouse. The Pages of the Mind looks interesting, but does anyone know how it compares to Tala? I would appreciate any insight!

  5. Kareni says:

@Wait, what? ~ I read it six years ago. My notes say, “I enjoyed it. It’s a spin-off from the author’s Twelve Kingdoms series, and I think a reader would find it valuable to start with those books. It’s fun to see a librarian as the heroine.”

Of Mark of the Tala, I wrote, “an enjoyable fantasy; it’s the first of a trilogy and I’d be happy to read on (if only my library had more than book one!)”

Neither of the books do I now recall in detail nor do I particularly wish to reread them.

  6. Wait, what? says:

@Kareni – thanks! Maybe I’ll give it a try. Could be my new favorite book!

  7. Kim says:

If you like character-driven horror set in space, “Dead Silence” by S. A. Barnes is excellent. Satellite repair crew finds luxury “ghost ship” that had gone missing 20 years prior. Enjoyed all her books, actually; Barnes does a really nice job with heroines who are resourceful, smart, often loners, and in complicated romantic pairings. Good world building without being overwhelming, too.

  8. Kim says:

Whoops! I still recommend “Dead Silence,” per my previous comment, but I made a mistake. When I said I enjoyed all of Barnes’s books, I was thinking that she was the author of “The Luminous Dead” (sci-fi horror) and “The Death of Jane Lawrence” (Victorian horror). She is not. Those books are by Caitlin Starling. They are also excellent.
