A Classic, a Thriller, & More

  • Wild, Wild Rake

Wild, Wild Rake by Janna MacGregor

Wild, Wild Rake by Janna MacGregor is $1.99! This is book six in the Cavisham Heiresses series. Shana reviewed this one and wasn’t able to finish it, but your mileage may have varied!

Her first marriage was an epic failure.

Lady Avalon Warwyck never did love her husband. Arrogant, selfish, and cruel, it’s a blessing when she’s widowed and left to raise her son all by herself. Finally, Avalon can live freely and do the work she loves: helping fallen women become businesswomen. She’s lived these past ten years with no desire to remarry―that is, until Mr. Devan Farris comes to town.

Can he convince her to take another chance at happily ever after?

Devan Farris―charming vicar, reputed rake, and the brother of Avalon’s son’s guardian―is reluctantly sent to town to keep tabs on Avalon and her son. Devan wishes he didn’t have to meddle in her affairs; he’s not one to trod on a woman’s independent nature and keen sense of convictions. But she’ll have nothing to do with vicar with a wild reputation―even though he’s never given his heart and body to another. If only he could find a way to show Avalon who he really is on the inside―a good, true soul looking for its other half. But how can prove that he wants to love and care for her. . .until death do they part?

  • The Windflower

    The Windflower by Laura London

The Windflower by Lauran Landon is $1.99! This has been name-dropped many times on the site and in the comments. This was originally published in 1984 and I definitely think that you should search Goodreads reviews for triggers.

The classic tale of passion on the high seas, available in print for the first time in 20 years . . .

Merry Wilding is a lady of breeding, of innocence, and of breathtaking beauty. With high hopes for a holiday in England, she sets sail from New York-but the tide of her life is destined to turn. Mistakenly swept aboard an infamous pirate ship, Merry finds herself at the mercy of a wicked crew . . . and one sinfully handsome pirate. Soon she’s spending her days yearning for escape, and her nights learning the pleasures of captivity.

Devon Crandall believes Merry is in league with his greatest enemy. He’s determined to slowly urge her secrets from her. But along the way, he discovers her beautifully unbreakable spirit . . . and a desire unlike any he’s ever known. She is hiding something from him, and yet, each day that passes brings her deeper into his heart. When fierce arguments give way to fiercer passion, can a pirate learn to love a woman? Or will true love be lost at sea?

  • Never Saw Me Coming

Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian

Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian is $2.99! This is a thriller set at a universe with a main character I think who falls into the morally gray or antiheroine category. I don’t remember if Elyse was curious about this one or not, but I know it’s up her alley!

Meet Chloe Sevre. She’s a freshman honor student, a leggings-wearing hot girl next door, who also happens to be a psychopath. Her hobbies include yogalates, frat parties, and plotting to kill Will Bachman, a childhood friend who grievously wronged her.

Chloe is one of seven students at her DC-based college who are part of an unusual clinical study for psychopaths—students like herself who lack empathy and can’t comprehend emotions like fear or guilt. The study, led by a renowned psychologist, requires them to wear smart watches that track their moods and movements.

When one of the students in the study is found murdered in the psychology building, a dangerous game of cat and mouse begins, and Chloe goes from hunter to prey. As she races to identify the killer and put her own plan into action, she’ll be forced to decide if she can trust any of her fellow psychopaths—and everybody knows you should never trust a psychopath.

Never Saw Me Coming is a compulsive, voice-driven thriller by an exciting new voice in fiction, that will keep you pinned to the page and rooting for a would-be killer.

  • The Last Wolf

The Last Wolf by Maria Vale

RECOMMENDEDThe Last Wolf by Maria Vale is FREE! I really enjoyed this book and its departure from the usual shifter mythology. Vale does a great job creating a sense of place. Be warned though, there is violence in the book and it is very descriptive.

For three days out of thirty, when the moon is full and her law is iron, the Great North Pack must be wild.

If she returns to her Pack, the stranger will die.
    But if she stays…

Silver Nilsdottir is at the bottom of her Pack’s social order, with little chance for a decent mate and a better life. Until the day a stranger stumbles into their territory, wounded and beaten, and Silver decides to risk everything on Tiberius Leveraux. But Tiberius isn’t all he seems, and in the fragile balance of the Pack and wild, he may tip the destiny of all wolves…

I thought ‘The Last Wolf’ was really good and worked well as a standalone (for those like me who don’t want to get sucked into a whole series).

  2. Elizabeth says:

‘The Wildflower’ cover looks so retro/old school. Might read just for giggles 🙂

  3. Msb says:

Sorry, 2 grammatical errors in the blurb mean I won’t start a book, much less finish it.

  4. SusanE says:

Mistletoe Christmas: An Anthology is $1.99 (for nook, at least). It has Regency novellas from Eloisa James, Christi Caldwell, Janna MacGregor, and Erica Ridley.

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

I was meh on THE LAST WOLF. I have a hard time with first person POV when the main character is so insecure (as the heroine is for the first ~2/3 of this book.) Also, they spend a lot of time as wolves and I wanted more plot and less wolf.

  6. Stefanie Magura says:

The author of the Windflower is Laura London. I believe this is a pen name, but I’m not sure.

  7. Nancy says:

I loved The Last Wolf and also the next two books in the series. The use of Old English as the Old Tongue made me very happy.

  8. Laura says:

Laura London is the pen name used by Sharon and Tom Curtis. When I was a younger reader, I had all their books on my keeper shelf; still have a few in a box today.

It’s old school, but still a great cast of characters on the pirate crew. Especially Cat-for years readers were clamoring for Cat to get his own hea.

For the price, take the way back time machine and enjoy!
