  • The Princess Knight

The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken

The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken is $2.99 and it’s part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals! This is book two in the Scarred Earth SagaI loved and reviewed the first book and Lara reviewed this one, giving it a B:

The cast of characters EXPLODES in this book. Pay attention to each and every new character; they are all important. We pop into a lot of different POVs which can be a little dizzying, but adds beautifully to the immersive world building of it all.

In New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken’s gripping new fantasy romance series, the Blacksmith Queen must confront armies and pretenders desperate to take her new-won crown. But with the Princess Knight at her side and a centaur warrior clan at her back, she’ll risk everything for victory . . .

    LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

Gemma Smythe dedicated her life to the glory of battle. With her fellow War Monks, she worshipped the war gods, rained destruction on her enemies, and raised the dead when the fancy took her. Until her sister Keeley became the prophesied Blacksmith Queen, and Gemma broke faith with her order to journey to the Amichai Mountain and fight by Keeley’s side.

The Amichai warriors are an unruly, never-to-be-tamed lot, especially their leader-in-waiting, Quinn. But when the War Monks declare support for Gemma’s ruthless younger sister Beatrix, the immaturity of her key ally is the least of Gemma’s problems. She has to get to the grand masters, dispel their grudge against her, and persuade them to fight for Keeley and justice. If her conviction can’t sway them, perhaps Quinn’s irritating, irreverent, clearly unhinged, ferocity will win the day . . .

  • Twice Shy

    Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle

Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle is $1.99! This one dropped last spring and was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. Aarya said it’s a “a fluffy, gentle hug of a book.” Sounds like that might appeal right now.

Can you find real love when you’ve always got your head in the clouds?

Maybell Parish has always been a dreamer and a hopeless romantic. But living in her own world has long been preferable to dealing with the disappointments of real life. So when Maybell inherits a charming house in the Smokies from her Great-Aunt Violet, she seizes the opportunity to make a fresh start.

Yet when she arrives, it seems her troubles have only just begun. Not only is the house falling apart around her, but she isn’t the only inheritor: she has to share everything with Wesley Koehler, the groundskeeper who’s as grouchy as he is gorgeous–and it turns out he has a very different vision for the property’s future.

Convincing the taciturn Wesley to stop avoiding her and compromise is a task more formidable than the other dying wishes Great-Aunt Violet left behind. But when Maybell uncovers something unexpectedly sweet beneath Wesley’s scowls, and as the two slowly begin to let their guard down, they might learn that sometimes the smallest steps outside one’s comfort zone can lead to the greatest rewards.

  • A Morbid Taste for Bones

A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters

RECOMMENDED: A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters is $1.99 and another KDD! This is book one in The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series, which I remember Sarah enjoying. Here’s what she said:

This book and the next few books of the series got me through the scariest parts of early Quarantimes.

On an expedition to acquire a saint’s remains, Brother Cadfael instead finds intrigue and murder

It is 1137, and the ambitious head of Shrewsbury Abbey wishes to acquire the remains of Saint Winifred for the glory of his Benedictine order. Brother Cadfael is part of the expedition sent to the saint’s final resting place in Wales, where he finds the villagers divided over the Benedictines’ quest.

When the leading opponent to moving the grave is shot dead with a mysterious arrow, some believe Winifred herself delivered the blow. Brother Cadfael knows that an earthly hand did the killing. But he doesn’t know that his plan to root out a murderer may dig up a case of love and justice, where the waves of sin may be scandal—or his own ruin.

  • Royal Holiday

    Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory

RECOMMENDED: Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory is $1.99! Maya loved this one and gave it an A:

In the end, this story is overwhelmingly about saying yes to good things put directly in your path. If all you want to do is wrap yourself up in a Christmas love story with two adults just admirably adulting all the way through the book, I say grab a Christmas sweater and a hot chocolate, and get ready to have a stranger ask you why you look so happy reading the book you have in your hand!

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Proposal and “rising star in the romance genre” (Entertainment Weekly) comes a dazzling new novel about a spontaneous holiday vacation that turns into an unforgettable romance.

Vivian Forest has been out of the country a grand total of one time, so when she gets the chance to tag along on her daughter Maddie’s work trip to England to style a royal family member, she can’t refuse. She’s excited to spend the holidays taking in the magnificent British sights, but what she doesn’t expect is to become instantly attracted to a certain private secretary, his charming accent, and unyielding formality.

Malcolm Hudson has worked for the Queen for years and has never given a personal, private tour—until now. He is intrigued by Vivian the moment he meets her and finds himself making excuses just to spend time with her. When flirtatious banter turns into a kiss under the mistletoe, things snowball into a full-on fling.

Despite a ticking timer on their holiday romance, they are completely fine with ending their short, steamy affair come New Year’s Day. . .or are they?

  1. Lena Brassard/Ren Benton says:

The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson is $1.99. I’ve been waiting for this one to go on sale for a while but really can’t take hypocritical religious oppressors as leisure reading at the moment. Maybe somebody else will be energized by it rather than further exhausted, though.

Blacktop Wasteland by S. A. Cosby is $2.99. “Like Ocean’s Eleven meets Drive, with a Southern noir twist.”

  2. flchen1 says:

Talia Hibbert’s A Girl Like Her and Kelly Jamieson’s One Wicked Night are currently free.

  3. Darlynne says:

A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES is the first Cadfael book and while the series doesn’t need to be read in order, there is a satisfying arc throughout. I had the opportunity to meet Ellis Peters and, all these years later, it remains my favorite and most embarrassing (one of many) author encounter/signings. People, she was graciousness itself; I was an incoherent fangirl, not one word of mine made any sense. *shudder*

  4. Maria F says:

Casey McQuiston’s ONE LAST STOP is on sale on kindle right now $2.99. Also Andrea Hairston’s MASTER OF POISONS, which I believe has been mentioned here at SBTB

  5. Carole says:

Love the Brother Cadfael’s mysteries and I re-read the whole series every couple of years. Interesting take on medieval times and Brother Cadfael has one foot in the monastery, but also in the outside world. All the stories have lots of heart energy and there are strong female characters throughout the series. Highly recommend.

  6. JD says:

Echoing the comments of others – highly recommend “Morbid Taste of Bones” and the series as whole. This book has mystery, a few romantic subplots, and great observations on human behavior. Just read during my vacation and could not out it down. It is a lovely read!

  7. Todd says:

There was also a PBS series based on the books … starring Derek Jacobi as Cadfael.

  8. Susan says:

Another Cadfael fan of many decades. I no longer own my paper copies but did replace them with digital. I’ve also been slowly collecting the audiobooks and, coincidentally, just downloaded A Morbid Taste for Bones yesterday in preparation of a sorely-needed comfort listen. Sadly, Derek Jacobi narrated the abridged versions only. I would have loved revisiting Cadfael with him.

IIRC, Peters intended to continue the series when she unexpectedly died, but the last book is still a satisfactory ending spot. As a result, new readers shouldn’t be concerned about committing to a series that will leave them hanging. Dive in!

P.S. Feeling very jealous of Darlynne right now, despite the second-hand embarrassment.

  9. chacha1 says:

I liked ‘Royal Holiday’ very much. If you recall a recent review on SBTB of a later-in-life romance (we all hated it) – this is the antidote for that.

  10. Susan/DC says:

@ Lena Brassard: If you’ve not yet read S.A. Crosby’s Razorblade Tears, I recommend it. Don’t know if it’s on sale though.
