Links: Events, Plagiarism, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Wednesday Links! I appreciate you all sharing your feelings of frustration and comfort last week. Of course, we hope SBTB continues to be a safe space for support and community.

I know I just traveled in March, but I’m already getting the urge to go somewhere again. It doesn’t have to be a big change of pace, but just another location to quiet my brain a little bit. The weather in New England is supposed to really warm up this weekend and I bought a nice little porch chair. I plan to set up shop on Saturday, buy some tasty new beer, and read my spooky library book.

What are your weekend plans?

As reminder, Sarah is moderated an in-person, star-studded romance event in the D.C. area!

I can’t stop being amazed at this playlist of “If They Made a Musical with Hits from the 2000s.” This is my favorite so far.

This was making the social media rounds yesterday. An author admitted to plagiarizing her first novel and then was found to have plagiarized her article on said plagiarism.

Back to TikTok! I love the Fuck.It.Go.Explore account. Lots of beautiful landscapes with voices overs about not giving a fuck anymore.

And back to plagiarism! Elisabeth Finch, a writer for Grey’s Anatomy, was exposed using other people’s personal traumas for character storylines on the show. Vanity Fair has a multi-part deep dive, though there may be a paywall.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I got a 0 on my first-ever Spanish assignment in college because the professor said I had plagiarized by working with a group (they all got 0s) too). I was extra super careful after that.

I hope someone else enjoys this sketch as much as I do: https://youtu.be/tm0juqBgG08

Come travel vicariously to Turin, Italy with the moon wolves from Subwoolfer https://youtu.be/U5bhCNvm1HY

The Eurovision grand final is this Saturday. I may have to figure out how to VPN just so I can hear Graham Norton’s snarktastic commentary for the BBC.
Also, reddit has excellent memes on r/eurovision

  3. LML says:

@Escapologist, I was intimidated by the idea of VPN and then had a good laugh at myself when I discovered how dead simple it is to install and use.

  4. kkw says:

LML oooh would you expand upon that, please? Because my tv is apparently too old to support the peacock app and I too am looking at the necessity of VPN

  5. Crystal says:

I understand the travel bug. I kind of dropped into a trip to NYC for week after next. It’s going to be kind of great though, because I am going to be able to see some family (including a niece I’ve only met once because she’s 2 and another one I’ll be meeting for the first time ever because she’s 6 months old) and I’ve got a ticket to Hamilton that I’m not paying for and boy is that the universe coming up Crystal. The the following week I’m seeing Gin Blossoms and Barenaked Ladies in St. Augustine, and I’m in the process of planning a birthday trip for my son to his first NASCAR race (kid is a fiend for stock car racing, as is his dad). So I expect to be a tired but happy sort in August.

  6. Escapeologist says:

@kkw the struggle is real with my 9 year old TV and Peacock.

You can also stream Eurovision from the Swedish broadcaster SVT’s website, it’s available worldwide, no geoblocking. I did that for semi final 1 yesterday. There was minimal commentary (in Swedish) and NO ad breaks!

  7. Lynn S says:

If you don’t want to mess with a VPN Eurovision is on Peacock. You could trial it. My daughter is a huge fan! And while you have Peacock, Girls5Eva and We Are Lady Parts are 2 great shows to check out!

  8. Kit says:

I try to console myself that even when we come last we still have the best Eurovision commentator.

I’ll probably watch it for Graham Norton alone.

  9. Malaraa says:

This is already a month+ old because i am not timely in anything, but i was going down one rabbit hole of links, found this, and got sidetracked onto a different burrow of links! Lots of interesting stuff here.

*(about sports and artificially divided gender lines, which i just realized i should have put in the last message)

  11. Darlynne says:

I hope this is OK, please delete if not: I’ve used Tunnelbear’s VPN for years whenever I travel. Their always-free package provides 500mb every month. I don’t know if that would be enough to watch Eurovision, but they have a number of plans that might help.

  12. Julie says:

    Spooky book title? Pretty please.

  13. LML says:

@kkw, I read a lot of reviews and selected a paid plan with Nord. I think they have on-line chat and their email response to questions is under 24 hours. They’re never snippy with their responses, which counts for a lot with me, because I remember well when IT people thought they were king of kings and lord of lords.

  14. Lisa L says:

@LML and now I have the Hallelujah Chorus earworm hahaha
