  • Marry in Secret

Marry in Secret by Anne Gracie

Marry in Secret by Anne Gracie is $1.99!  This is the third book in the Marriage of Convenience series. Catherine gave this one a B:

On balance, then, I think this book ends up as a B. It’s not the festival of squee that denotes an A, or the ‘perfectly good but a bit meh’ that denotes a C.

A rugged and ruined naval officer comes to claim his bride in an unforgettable tale of love, revenge and redemption from the national bestselling author of Marry in Scandal

Lady Rose Rutherford—rebel, heiress, and exasperated target of the town’s hungry bachelors—has a plan to gain the freedom she so desperately desires: she will enter into a marriage of convenience with the biggest prize on the London marriage mart.

There’s just one problem: the fierce-looking man who crashes her wedding to the Duke of Everingham — Thomas Beresford, the young naval officer she fell in love with and secretly married when she was still a schoolgirl. Thought to have died four years ago he’s returned, a cold, hard stranger with one driving purpose—revenge.

Embittered by betrayal and hungry for vengeance, Thomas will stop at nothing to reclaim his rightful place, even if that means using Rose—and her fortune—to do it. But Rose never did follow the rules, and as she takes matters into her own unpredictable hands, Thomas finds himself in an unexpected and infuriating predicament: he’s falling in love with his wife…

  • Bad Influence

    Bad Influence by Stefanie London

Bad Influence by Stefanie London is $1.99! This is the third and final book in the Bad Bachelors series. For me, the series started off strong, but I was meh on book two and liked this one a smidge better than that one.

Annie Maxwell had her whole life figured out…until her fiancé left her when his career took off. If that wasn’t bad enough, every society blog posted pictures of him escorting a woman wearing her wedding ring. To help the women of New York avoid men like her ex, she created the Bad Bachelors app. But try as she might, Annie just can’t forget him…

Outside his stellar career, CEO Joe Preston has made a lot of mistakes. None was worse than leaving the love of his life when she needed him most. Now, he’s ready for a second chance. He may still be one heck of a bad influence, but when Annie’s safety is threatened by a hacker, Joe is the only one who can save her—and he’ll do whatever it takes to win her back. But will their hard-won bond survive the revelation that Annie is the one pulling the strings behind Bad Bachelors?

  • The Ones Who Got Away

The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren

RECOMMENDEDThe Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren is $1.99! I really enjoyed this one and its portrayal of people living with trauma. I gave it a B+, but as it deals with victims of gun violence, I completely understand why readers may want to avoid it.

If the subject matter doesn’t scare you off and your catnip is friends to lovers, slow burn-y goodness, The Ones Who Got Away is highly worth the read.

It’s been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she’d never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs…

  • The Gilded Ones

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel. Maya mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet and was tempted by the gorgeous cover. Have you read this one?

Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.

  1. Star says:

I’m honestly not sure I’ve ever read a romance series as strong as the Loren series. Some of the books worked for me better than others, but every one of them was good, and they give the sense that she conceived of the whole thing as a series rather than the usual sort of connected-by-character series style romance tends to produce. As good as the individual books were, I think the series is better, if that makes sense? You could probably read them out of order, and each couple’s romance is contained within their book*, but in addition to the series plot arc, this is a series that deals with Themes, and she develops those over the course of the whole series. You can also tell that she’s an expert on trauma. I think she was a therapist before she became a writer? or something? and it really shows.

[*] Does anyone else have a major pet peeve for when a couple’s story is teased in earlier books and then their book starts sort of in the middle of their story? I don’t mean the normal setting-up-a-couple phenomenon, which I’m cool with, or a couple having history you find out about later; I mean, major plotful relationship developments happen in earlier books, maybe off page and definitely not in their POV, and then their book opens and you never actually get to see what happened, their relationship seems to be in the middle already, and there doesn’t seem to be any reason for this narrative decision? I just started one like this and am mad enough that I might not finish it, which is annoying because I only finished the previous book in the series because I was interested in this couple.

  2. Lara says:

While these books are not romance, I would be remiss not to mention that Elizabeth Wein’s YA Arthurian historical series is on sale on the Nook for $3.99. These are five wonderful books grounding Arthur, Medraut/Mordred, Mordred’s half-siblings Goewin and Lleu (this is not any kind of conventional Arthurian tale), and his half-African son Teklemakhos fully in history and taking them all over Europe and Asia after the fall of Camlann/Camelot. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

  3. MaryK says:

@Star – Yes to your whole [*]. Those types of stories are a lot closer to serials than I like. There are several popular KU authors I avoid because of that. The stories are too interwoven and non linear for my taste.

  4. Neile says:

@Star – I agree with you both on the Roni Loren series (so good! and I also really like her current series) and on the interwoven story issue. But what I dislike most are the duets and trilogies that aren’t clear from the start that they’ll be leaving you with a cliffhanger at the end of book one. Bah!

@Lara – I loved those Wein novels when I read them as they came out. I have them in paper, but just might get them electronically since the set is also on sale in Kindle for $3.99. Likely in other formats as well. Elizabeth Wein definitely doesn’t get the recognition her work deserves. This is a strong series and CODE NAME VERITY is painfully gorgeous.

  5. flchen1 says:

Tracy Solheim’s Just for Kicks is a KDD for $.99 today.

  6. DonnaMarie says:

I’ve pretty much given up on YA. One too many disappointments. But damned if THE GILDED ONES isn’t calling out my name.

  7. JaneB says:

I thought The Gilded Ones was excellent, but it has some super squicky stuff in it as far as bodily harm inflicted on the narrator and her peers. It’s written in a YA not-horribly-graphic, but still horrifying if you think about it, way. I was glad I read it but thought I’d take a breather before trying the second book. (Book 1 does wrap up in a satisfying way.)

  8. Msb says:

The Ones Who Got Away – you know, mass shootings are unusual outside war zones. Except in the USA. Weird.

  9. Lisa F says:

I liked all of these, but the Loren is tops.

  10. LML says:

Why do so many fantasy novels have covers that are more creative and lovelier than romance novels?

  11. LML says:

@Star, you’ve explained how I feel about Loren’s The Ones Who Got Away series. I was continually surprised as I read each book. The characters’ emotions were so deep and so nuanced, they felt to me like resonant musical frequencies.
