  • You Deserve Each Other

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle is $2.99! This contemporary romance was featured in a previous Hide Your Wallet by both Aarya and Catherine. I’ve heard good things about this one from fellow romance readers, though some did find the barbs the leads throw at one another to be particularly mean at times.

When your nemesis also happens to be your fiancé, happily ever after becomes a lot more complicated in this wickedly funny, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy debut.

Naomi Westfield has the perfect fiancé: Nicholas Rose holds doors open for her, remembers her restaurant orders, and comes from the kind of upstanding society family any bride would love to be a part of. They never fight. They’re preparing for their lavish wedding that’s three months away. And she is miserably and utterly sick of him.

Naomi wants out, but there’s a catch: whoever ends the engagement will have to foot the nonrefundable wedding bill. When Naomi discovers that Nicholas, too, has been feigning contentment, the two of them go head-to-head in a battle of pranks, sabotage, and all-out emotional warfare.

But with the countdown looming to the wedding that may or may not come to pass, Naomi finds her resolve slipping. Because now that they have nothing to lose, they’re finally being themselves–and having fun with the last person they expect: each other.

  • Faker

    Faker by Sarah Smith

Faker by Sarah Echavarre Smith is $1.99! I love an enemies to lovers romance, so I was interested in this when it came out. I’m going to namedrop BookThingo again (seriously, give her a follow), because her live tweet of this book was really illuminating. However, your mileage may vary.

Debut author Sarah Smith nails this fun and sexy rom-com where two office foes hammer out their differences to build a love that will last….

Emmie Echavarre is a professional faker. She has to be to survive as one of the few female employees at Nuts & Bolts, a power tool company staffed predominantly by gruff, burly men. From nine to five, Monday through Friday, she’s tough as nails–the complete opposite of her easy-going real self.

One thing she doesn’t have to fake? Her disdain for coworker Tate Rasmussen. Tate has been hostile to her since the day they met. Emmie’s friendly greetings and repeated attempts to get to know him failed to garner anything more than scowls and terse one-word answers. Too bad she can’t stop staring at his Thor-like biceps…

When Emmie and Tate are forced to work together on a charity construction project, things get…heated. Emmie’s beginning to see that beneath Tate’s chiseled exterior lies a soft heart, but it will take more than a few kind words to erase the past and convince her that what they have is real.

  • Mr. Hotshot CEO

Mr. Hotshot CEO by Jackie Lau

Mr. Hotshot CEO by Jackie Lau is FREE! This is book two in the Kwan Sisters contemporary romance series. Lau’s books are relatively loved amongst the Bitchery, especially if you’re looking for something a little less angsty.

As CEO of Fong Investments, I’m a busy man. In fact, my family claims I’m an obsessive workaholic, and when they force me to take two weeks off, I have no idea what to do with myself.

While brooding over an espresso, I meet Courtney Kwan, a biomedical researcher who savors the little things in life. And, suddenly, an idea strikes me—I will pay this woman to teach me how to enjoy my vacation from work.

Soon, I find myself doing crazy things like baking cookies, reading for pleasure, buying a phallic cactus, and falling in love. But Courtney is dealing with some serious issues of her own, and I fear that when I return to work, I won’t be able to give her what she needs, and I’ll lose her forever…

  1. Jill Q. says:

I really liked YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER even though I understand why the premise might turn a lot of people off. I think the author did a good job setting up in the beginning about why both of these people not be showing all of their real selves and a lot of the satisfaction of the story was peeling back layers and getting to understand/appreciate each other better. It worked for me and I hated TO HAVE AND TO HOAX which was was similar but I felt had a “we just have to get back to who we used to be” to fall back in love premise, which kind of rubbed me the wrong way.
I also liked it for the very personal reasons that
    – It is that it had a more unusual location (small town Wisconsin, but it didn’t feel overly cutesy)
    – The people who were just ordinary people with fairly ordinary jobs (shop clerk and dentist).
    – Nothing about social media, going viral, or reality TV as part of the central premise. I’m so sick of it in contemporary rom coms. I want to escape from that when I pick up a book.

  2. DonnaMarie says:

YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER may have buzz and four stars on GoodReads, but I disliked it with the heat of a thousand fiery suns. Sure the hijinxs are fun, but OMG the narrator is a toxic mix of selfishness and “low self-esteem” with a soupcon of passive aggressive bullshit. And it’s “low self-esteem” because it really isn’t. When your fiancée tells you he got a great job offer someone with low self esteem does not respond with: “You expect me to give up my (low paying dead end job at a store that’s about to go out of business) and my friends (consisting only of co-workers who are leaving town for better jobs) so you can make more money (in a bigger town where I might have better job prospects) and be hours away from your (awful) parents (especially your mother who keeps telling me I’m fat)?”.

Here endeth the rant or we’ll be here all day.

  3. Mzcue says:

Jackie Lau’s Mr Hotshot CEO deserves Hall of Fame status for the compassionate but realistic way chronic depression is treated in the story. It’s my favorite of her books, with Lau’s signature dialog, animated family relationships and the exquisite Asian Canadian food of Toronto.

Heroine Courtney Kwan is an accomplished bio-researcher who believes her recurring bouts of intractable depression render a lasting, loving relationship impossible. Having became a success in high tech at an early age, Julian Fong is energetic, persistent, and unable to turn off the drive that keeps him from having a life beyond work. He’s already in love with Courtney when he grasps the nature and extent of her disorder. She fends him off despite her own attraction. But Julian applies patience and determination to overcome Courtney’s mistrust.

What sets this story apart for me was its acknowledgement that intractable depression exists as a life long reality. With patience and compassionate treatment, it can be managed, but not cured. Julian is in for the long haul and Courtney finds it in herself to believe in a future together.

I recommend it highly. Take advantage of this deal on Mr. Hotshot CEO as a splendid introduction to Jackie Lau’s work.

  4. Amy says:

    Love Mr Hotshot CEO!

  5. EJ says:

I didn’t know I wanted a romance set in a power tool company. I’m thinking of Binford Tools from Home Improvement and all their disastrous inventions.

  6. EJ says:

Update: I started Faker and it’s basically The Hating Game in a different industry. My issue with The Hating Game is that people in corporate offices could not speak to each other with that level of hostility without being called in to HR or fired. Faker has the same issue.

  7. Darlynne says:

I saw MR. HOTSHOT CEO and immediately thought, kill me now. Then I saw Jackie Lau and the sun shone brightly and birds chirped. What a difference an author makes.

  8. Darlynne says:

    At Amazon US today:

YOU TRULY ASSUMED by Laila Sabreen is $2.99: In this compelling and thought-provoking debut novel, after a terrorist attack rocks the country and anti-Islamic sentiment stirs, three Black Muslim girls create a space where they can shatter assumptions and share truths.

D (A TALE OF TWO WORLDS)by Michael Faber is $2.99: It all starts on the morning the letter D disappears from language. First, it vanishes from Dhikilo’s parents’ conversation at breakfast, then from the road signs outside and from her school dinners. Soon the local dentist and the neighbor’s dalmatian are missing, and even the Donkey Derby has been called off.

  9. Michael I says:

Tessa Dare’s first novel “Goddess of the Hunt” is currently on sale for $1.99 for Kindle and Nook (possibly others).

  10. chacha1 says:

happy to add Mr. Hotshot CEO to my digital Lau collection!

  11. Mzcue says:

@Darlynne IKR? Lau’s book titles gave me pause in the beginning. Mr Hotshot CEO, Pregnant by the Playboy, Grumpy Fake Boyfriend—they’re almost campy. But all very good stories, impeccably written.

  12. Jen says:

I love me some “The Hating Game” and when I started reading Faker I was stoked that I found another enemies-to-lovers that had a similar feel. Until it felt *too* similar to THG. I feel like it’s about one step shy of plagiarism since every single plot point is reproduced.

  13. EJ says:

I read the sample of You Deserve Each Other and it’s bringing up fun memories of being trapped in an engagement with a man who took me for granted and never stood up to his shitty parents. So I won’t be continuing for personal reasons.

  14. sparetimereader says:

Wanted to chime in on all the love for Lau and every one of her books (it’s crazy I’ve picked so many up for free). But also to Darlynne’s rec of D (A TALE OF TWO WORLDS) – if you have young or youngish kids in your life I can’t recommend this enough. We listened to it on Audible so I didn’t have to read all the “d”-less words out loud myself, so I can’t say what it would be like to read the e-version but at that price, it’s definitely worth giving it a try. Kids (and I) loved it. It was a beautiful story and a great examination of language and stories. And if you want to splurge on the Audible, the narration was fantastic.

  15. Alexandra says:

    I Love Mr Hotshot CEO

  16. Sunflower says:

Absolutely agree with @EJ that Faker is a copy of The Hating Game. Now, I love The Hating Game (despite the issues) and thought that Faker follows the plot so closely scene by scene that it might be borderline copyright infringement, and that annoyed me a lot. At least the title seems fitting in that regard.

  17. EJ says:

The Hating Game is at least funny.
