Hide Your Wallet

March 2022 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • The Astronaut and the Star

The Astronaut and the Star by Jen Comfort

    Author: Jen Comfort
Released: March 1, 2022 by Montlake
    Genre: ,

An out-of-this-world romantic comedy featuring an astronaut tasked with training a Hollywood actor for a space flick.

Astronaut Regina “Reggie” Hayes wants to be the first woman on the moon—it’s all she’s ever dreamed of. But after a PR disaster, Reggie is off the list for a lunar mission. To rehabilitate her reputation with NASA, she agrees to a different kind of assignment: astronaut “training” with a Hollywood action hero.

Jon Leo is a charmer. With credits that include an underperforming sitcom and a campy action flick called Space Dude, his upcoming role in a prestigious movie could prove he’s a star. But Jon isn’t just big muscles and an otherworldly smile—he’s also a total space nerd. He’s pumped about his own personal space camp…until he meets ice-cold Reggie.

Although Reggie and Jon are polar opposites, their mutual attraction is undeniable, and it only takes a few weeks in close quarters for them to give in to its magnetic force. Jon is set on convincing Reggie this is a match made in the heavens, but her future is in space, and his is among stars of the Hollywood kind. The odds of successfully launching a real relationship outside the confines of the training base are anything but optimal.

Reggie, content with keeping things casual, is forced by a sudden turn of events to confront the possibility of losing Jon forever. Now, she’ll do whatever it takes to win both the man and the moon.

Amanda: Very curious about this pairing!

  • Knit 2 Socks in 1

Knit 2 Socks in 1 by Safiyyah Talley

    Author: Safiyyah Talley
Released: March 1, 2022 by Storey Publishing LLC
    Genre: ,

Socks continue to be a favorite project of knitters, but “single sock syndrome” — losing interest in knitting that second sock after the first one is done — is the perpetual dilemma. Knit 2 Socks in 1 introduces a distinctive new method that will appeal to sock knitters of all levels as the simplest, most accessible way yet developed to knit two socks at a time.

This innovative technique begins with making the first sock’s cuff. The knitter can then relax and knit a long tube, which makes up the main body of both socks. With the help of a lifeline (scrap yarn that is threaded through stitches to hold them in place), the knitter can easily separate the long tube into two socks. The heels and toes are worked with a simple two-row repeat and are finished with a “hat closure,” a novice knitting technique often used to close the tops of hats. Much like choosing an alternate ending in a classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, the knitter can choose from a wide range of stitch patterns, design features, levels of difficulty, and sizes ranging from child to adult. Knit 2 Socks in 1 is a tried-and-true sock-knitting technique that allows knitters from all backgrounds to join in on the fun.

Shana: I read an ARC of this, and loved it. Perfect for first time sock knitters, or knitters who want to learn a faster and less fiddly technique for knitting two at a time. The general sock knitting sections are very strong too, I had to read several books and take two socking knitting classes to get the info packed into this one.

  • Where is Your Heart

Where is Your Heart by Anita Kelly

    Author: Anita Kelly
    Released: March 1, 2022
    Genre: , , ,
    Series: Moonlighters #3

How long, exactly, had June been coming to Moonie’s for the sole purpose of pining after the bartender?

She certainly didn’t come for the karaoke. Even though the karaoke made her smile sometimes. All these young queers with their off-key, bouncy energy. They made Mal smile, too, June knew. Even if Mal tended to hide her smiles.

But she saved them sometimes, for June.

Maybe Mal had secret smiles for other women, when June wasn’t around. There was probably no good reason for Mal Edwards, a bastion of stability and good sense, to see any kind of future with June anyway. Was it even fair to express feelings to a woman like that when you spent months away on the road?

But as another Pride weekend approaches, June’s fiftieth birthday and the eventual end of her long-haul trucking days loom in her mind, nestled against the memories of Moonie’s nights gone by where it felt like June and Mal came close—close to something happening, something real. Until June would inevitably chicken out. Retreat once again to life on the road.

It’s time for June to finally figure out her next act. And if she’s not brave enough to ask Mal Edwards to be part of it, she doesn’t deserve her, anyway.

After all. If you can’t tell a butch you love her during Pride, when the hell can you?

Shana: I gobbled up the first two books in this series and I had a crush on Mal, the cranky bartender who finally finds love in this book. I’m hoping for more of the same comforting sweetness in this installment.

Tara: I haven’t read any of these books, but this one sounds real cute. Also, I love seeing two hunky mascs of centre on this cover!

    Released: March 3, 2022
    Genre: , ,

Three kids. Two women. One job.

Spoiled heiress Hadley Rains has never committed to a thing in her life. Until her father cuts off her allowance and she’s left with a point to prove.

Professional nanny Florence Underwood has problems of her own. Her old-fashioned methods are out of style, and she’s swimming in debt.

Enter the McLeod-Allen kids. Feisty, troubled, and reeling from the divorce of their parents, the kids need a nanny. But they end up with two.

When stern disciplinarian meets flighty brat, things really shouldn’t go well. And they don’t. Until a mysterious disappearance draws the two together.

Only true opposites can create a perfect balance, but can either one of them realize what they have before it’s too late?

Watching Henry is a new stand-alone lesbian romance from Sienna Waters, bestselling author of The Wrong Date, A Perfect Mess, and Tea Leaves & Tourniquets.

Tara: I think this premise sounds kind of bonkers and I love it.

While Margaret is the best sharpshooter in town, only teams of two can register, and she needs an alchemist.

Weston Winters isn’t an alchemist–yet. Fired from every apprenticeship he’s landed, his last chance hinges on Master Welty taking him in. But when Wes arrives at Welty Manor, he finds only Margaret and her bloodhound Trouble. Margaret begrudgingly allows him to stay, but on one condition: he must join the hunt with her.

Although they make an unlikely team, Wes is in awe of the girl who has endured alone on the outskirts of a town that doesn’t want her, in this creaking house of ghosts and sorrow. And even though Wes disrupts every aspect of her life, Margaret is drawn to him. He, too, knows what it’s like to be an outsider. Elyse’s pick!

  • In a New York Minute

In a New York Minute by Kate Spencer

    Author: Kate Spencer
Released: March 15, 2022 by Forever
    Genre: ,

A clever, tender, and romantic novel for readers of Christina Lauren, Jasmine Guillory, and Sophie Cousens, this laugh-out-loud debut is a perceptive reminder that fate can have a sense of humor, and that love can happen…In a New York Minute.

Franny Doyle is having the worst day. She’s been laid off from her (admittedly mediocre) job, the subway doors ripped her favorite silk dress to ruins, and now she’s flashed her unmentionables to half of lower Manhattan. On the plus side, a dashing stranger came to her rescue with his (Gucci!) suit jacket. On the not-so-plus side, he can’t get away from her fast enough.

Worse yet? Someone posted their (entirely not) meet-cute online. Suddenly Franny and her knight-in-couture, Hayes Montgomery III, are the newest social media sensation, and all of New York is shipping #SubwayQTs.

Only Franny and Hayes couldn’t be a more disastrous match. She’s fanciful, talkative, and creative. He’s serious, shy, and all about numbers. Luckily, in a city of eight million people, they never have to meet again. Yet somehow, Hayes and Franny keep running into each other—and much to their surprise, they enjoy each other’s company. A lot. But when Franny’s whole world is turned upside down (again!), can she find the courage to trust in herself and finally have the life—and love—she’s always wanted?

Sarah: I have heard really good things about this one, including from the book’s publicist! 😀

In fact, Kamila is so busy with her friends’ love lives, she’s hardly given any thought to her own . . .

Fortunately, Kamila has Rohan Nasser. A longtime friend of the family, he’s hugely successful, with the deliciously lean, firm body of a rock climber. Only lately, Kamila’s “harmless flirting” with Rohan is making her insides do a little bhangra dance.

  • Last Exit

    Last Exit by Max Gladstone

    Author: Max Gladstone
Released: March 8, 2022 by Tor Books
    Genre: ,

Ten years ago, Zelda led a band of merry adventurers whose knacks let them travel to alternate realities and battle the black rot that threatened to unmake each world. Zelda was the warrior; Ish could locate people anywhere; Ramon always knew what path to take; Sarah could turn catastrophe aside. Keeping them all connected: Sal, Zelda’s lover and the group’s heart.

Until their final, failed mission, when Sal was lost. When they all fell apart.

Ten years on, Ish, Ramon, and Sarah are happy and successful. Zelda is alone, always traveling, destroying rot throughout the US.

When it boils through the crack in the Liberty Bell, the rot gives Zelda proof that Sal is alive, trapped somewhere in the alts.

Zelda’s getting the band back together—plus Sal’s young cousin June, who has a knack none of them have ever seen before.

As relationships rekindle, the friends begin to believe they can find Sal and heal all the worlds. It’s not going to be easy, but they’ve faced worse before.

But things have changed, out there in the alts. And in everyone’s hearts.

Fresh from winning the Hugo and Nebula Awards, Max Gladstone weaves elements of American myth–the muscle car, the open road, the white-hatted cowboy–into a deeply emotional tale where his characters must find their own truths if they are to survive.

Amanda: Gladstone really writes some kickass heroines.

  1. LisaM says:

I agree with Sarah, sign me up for Kamila Knows Best. I hope if there’s a Miss Bates character, she gets a little HEA as well.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

Looking forward to India Holton’s new book THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEWOMEN WITCHES due out March 15.

Also, is it just me or is this list shorter than usual? (Maybe there’s a big romance publishing push for Valentine’s Day and early March is kind of no-man’s land for romance?)

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I’m really looking forward to the rerelease of Serena Bell’s three Under One Roof books: DO OVER, HEAD OVER HEELS, and SLEEPOVER (March 1, 15, and 29, respectively). The blurbs say these have been “lightly edited” since their original release dates. I didn’t read them the first time around, so I’m eager to read them now.

DUET by Julie Kriss (March 3): a rock-star romance from one of Romancelandia’s most underrated writers. I can trust Kriss to bring something new to even the most worn-out trope.

PUSHING THE LIMITS by Riley Hart (March 8): m/m involving adult step-brothers, one of whom has been pining for the other for a long time.

REWRITING THE STARS by Claire Kingsley (March 10): the long-awaited final book in Kingsley’s Bailey Brothers series features a Romeo & Juliet theme between MCs from two rival families. I’m glad that Kingsley—whose husband died unexpectedly last year—has felt strong enough to finish this wonderful series.

BEDHEAD by Brooke Blaine (March 15): antagonists-to-lovers m/m featuring rival publishers. This begins Blaine’s new Hate to Love You series.

LAST RESORT by Amelia Wilde (March 22): third and final book in Wilde’s Collectors Trilogy about a reclusive art collector and the innocent young artist he has “collected.” The first two books were very dark, and I’m not expecting that to change for book three.

ROMEO by Sybil Bartel (March 22): the next in Bartel’s Alpha Elite series romantic-suspense books set in Florida and featuring beyond-gonzo alpha heroes.

RETURN OF THE OUTBACK BILLIONAIRE by Kelly Hunter (March 29): the latest HP from the always-reliable Hunter. This features an ex-con hero who took the fall for a crime he did not commit. Should be all kinds of angsty. Can’t wait!

PARTIES by C.M. Nascosta (March 30, postponed from February): in this sequel to GIRLS WEEKEND, three female elves have to decide if the orcs they met on a girls’ weekend are going to be long-term relationship material.

And finally, as much as I liked Tessa Bailey’s IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER and Trish Doller’s FLOAT PLAN, paying $10.99 a piece for the ebooks of their follow-ups—HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER (March 1) and SUITE SPOT (March 8), respectively—is too rich for my blood. I’d like to read both of these books (the heroine in each is the sister of the previous book’s heroine), but unless my library has them, I won’t be reading them in March: I’ll be waiting for a sale.

  4. Red Sky says:

the last living mythical creature…Whoever is able to kill the hala will earn fame and riches

Why?! Why kill the LAST mythical creature?! SMH, this coulda been all the catnip. If y’all review A Far Wilder Magic could you please spoil if the hala gets killed, thx

  5. Amanda says:

@FashionablyEvil: Definitely shorter! There’s no obligation to contribute. So if there isn’t anything a reviewer is excited about or if they’re just busy with other stuff, there’s no pressure to add to the list!

  6. Jaime says:

I’m very interested in this tube sock idea, luckily Hoopla has it available so I may be trying a new sock method tonight

  7. MaryK says:

@Sarah – I’d love to know what you think of Crowbones when you’re done. I really liked Lake Silence and then really didn’t like Wild Country so I’m giving this one a hard side-eye. I thought WC butchered the characterizations and had a melancholy ending.

  8. Laurel says:

I have one sock that I knitted right before covid. I have been meaning to knit the second one, but could never get up the enthusiasm to do it. I have one sock syndrome! I may need to give this book a look.

  9. DonnaMarie says:

@SBSarah, I adore the Crow characters in this series. I am so jealous that you have this book. I refrained from saying it when mentioned in WAYR, but if you’re going to keep bringing it up…

    SO JEALOUS!

  10. Kareni says:

I’m with you, @DonnaMarie, and am suffering Crowbones envy!

  11. Carol S. says:

Also curious about the sock technique, especially about how well it will fit. When I saw the title, I originally thought it was the knit a sock inside another sock method a la Anna Karenina.

    https://pieceworkmagazine.com/knitting-two-socks-at-once/

  12. RebeccaD says:

A LADY’S FINDER by Edie Cay is also out today and I loved both prior books in the When The Blood is Up series.

  13. cleo says:

I’m really curious about Travelers Along the Way: A Robin Hood Remix by Aminah Mae Safi. It came out today.

It’s a YA retelling of Robin Hood, set in Jerusalem during the 3rd Crusade – the rag-tag band of thieves are mostly Muslim women and apparently there are queer characters too.

  14. Carrie G says:

I know these are for later in the month, but just FYI:

Annabeth Albert has a new series: A-List Security. The first book is due out March 24th, titled TOUGH LUCK. (MM) She is such a solid writer and I always enjoy her books.

Stella Riley has the third book in her Brandon Brothers series, THE MONTESORO LEGACY out on March 30th.

  15. DeborahT says:

I’m hoping that Annabeth Albert’s new series has a little more bite than her last couple of series. She’s definitely an autobuy for me and I enjoy her writing, but the two recent Navy stories and the smoke jumper series were a bit disappointing.

I appreciate reading about mature people having mature conversations to sort out problems and I think Albert puts a lot of thought into making that happen. But I’ve found in her last few books it’s left me wishing there were a little more conflict, and I honestly don’t remember what they’re about shortly after reading them. Sweet stories, nicely written, but unmemorable.

The Out of Uniform and #gaymers series were BDBC reads! Hopefully the new series is a little more like those.

  16. […] Weekly, the LA Times, Shondaland, and the Washington Post. For all you genre fans, we’ve got romance from SBTB and USA Today, fantasy from Tor and Paste, and of course, crime reads from CrimeReads. Hungry for […]

  17. Kris says:

I was looking forward to The Suite Spot by Trish Doller but I just can’t justify the$11.99 price in Canada.
