  • Only When It’s Us

Only When It’s Us by Chloe Liese

Only When It’s Us by Chloe Liese is 99c! This is book one in the Bergman Brothers series and later books have been mentioned on the site. This is a new adult romance romance with some enemies to lovers. There’s a note that the book was revised and expanded last year.

Prepare for an emotional rollercoaster brimming with laughter, tears, and slow-burn sexiness in this new adult romance that tackles the vulnerability of love with humor and heart.

    Ryder

Ever since she sat next to me in class and gave me death eyes, Willa Sutter’s been on my shit list. Why she hates me, I don’t know. What I do know is that Willa is the kind of chaos I don’t need in my tidy life. She’s the next generation of women’s soccer. Wild hair, wilder eyes. Bee-stung lips that should be illegal. And a temper that makes the devil seem friendly.

She’s a thorn in my side, a menacing, cantankerous, pain-in-the-ass who’s turned our Business Mathematics course into a goddamn gladiator arena. I’ll leave this war zone unscathed, coming out on top…And if I have my way with that crazy-haired, ball-busting hellion, that will be in more than one sense of the word.

    Willa

Rather than give me the lecture notes I missed like every other instructor I’ve had, my asshole professor tells me to get them from the silent, surly flannel-wearing mountain man sitting next to me in class. Well, I tried. And what did I get from Ryder Bergman? Ignored. What a complete lumbersexual neanderthal. Mangy beard and mangier hair. Frayed ball cap that hides his eyes. And a stubborn refusal to acknowledge my existence.

I’ve battled men before, but with Ryder, it’s war. I’ll get those notes and crack that Sasquatch nut if it’s the last thing I do, then I’ll have him at my mercy. Victory will have never tasted so sweet.

Only When It’s Us is a frenemies-to-lovers, college sports romance about a women’s soccer star and her surly lumberjack lookalike classmate, complete with a matchmaking professor, juvenile pranks, and a smoking slow burn. This standalone is the first in a series of new novels about a Swedish-American family of five brothers, two sisters, and their wild adventures as they each find happily ever after.

  • When a Rogue Meets His Match

When a Rogue Meets His Match by Elizabeth Hoyt

When a Rogue Meets His Match by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. This is book two in the Greycourt series and the first book is also on sale.. Ellen reviewed the first one to meh reviews and this one earned an F. Apparently the hero never sufficiently apologizes for his treatment of the heroine. However, I know Hoyt is an autobuy author for some if you’ve been waiting for this one to go on sale.

The second novel in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt’s Greycourt Series features an enemies-to-lovers romance with her signature blend of captivating characters and sensual romance.

Ambitious, sly, and lethally intelligent, Gideon Hawthorne has spent his life clawing his way up from the gutter. For the last ten years, he’s acted as the Duke of Windemere’s fixer, performing the most dangerous tasks without question. Now Gideon’s ready to quit the duke’s service and work solely for himself. But Windermere wants Gideon to complete one last task, and his reward is impossible to resist: Messalina Greycourt’s hand in marriage.

Witty, vivacious Messalina Greycourt has her pick of suitors. When Windermere summons Messalina to inform his niece that she must marry Mr. Hawthorne, she is appalled. But she’s surprised when Gideon offers her a compromise: as long as she plays the complacent wife, he promises to leave her alone until she asks for his touch. Since Messalina is confident that she’ll never ask Gideon for anything, she readily agrees. However, the more time she spends with Gideon, the harder it is to stay away.

  • Miss Buncle’s Book

Miss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson

RECOMMENDEDMiss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson is $2.99! It’s also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Carrie loved this book and gave it an A:

For the most part, Miss Buncle’s Book is not a laugh out loud book. Its humor is gentle and understated but very funny nonetheless. It’s also a delightful ode to the power of the written word.

Barbara Buncle is in a bind. Times are harsh, and Barbara’s bank account has seen better days. Stumped for ideas, Barbara draws inspiration from fellow residents of her quaint English village, writing a revealing novel that features the townsfolk as characters. The smashing bestseller is published under the pseudonym John Smith, which is a good thing because villagers recognize the truth. But what really turns her world around is when events in real life start mimicking events in the book. Funny, charming, and insightful, this novel reveals what happens when people see themselves through someone else’s eyes.

  • Shadow Magic

    Shadow Magic by Patricia Wrede

Shadow Magic by Patricia C. Wrede is $1.99! This is a fantasy novel first published in the early 80s and is the first book in the Lyra series. Some found the first installment a littler boring, but say that the series gets better with each book. For those who have read it, what do you think?

Alethia listens as her father Braca questions heir Har and friend Maurin, back from Lyra borders where other caravans have disappeared. Her mother Isme has a bad feeling. The night of her twentieth birthday party, Alethia is kidnapped by enemy Lithmern, led by a man with no face, and a body of black smoke.

But the woods are protected by Wyrd, small furry archers, and Ward-Keeper mage Jordet, of the tall silver-haired Shee. Soon the Noble House of Brenn must decide whether to ally with mythical races, including the sea-dwelling Neira. While the other eight Noble Houses squabble, the evil Shadow Men rise, and seek the five lost treasures of Alkyra that used to unite the four races.

  1. Elizabeth says:

DE Stevenson is an awesome author and Miss Buncle is part of a series I recommend for historic fiction readers. Scottish woman who lived and wrote through both world wars.

  2. Cicely says:

I love Patricia C. Wrede, and I’ve read all the Lyra books, but agree that the earlier ones are kind of forgettable. The best are Caught in Crystal (also on sale) and The Raven Ring, both with kick-ass heroines. I remember raving in a job interview once about how Caught in Crystal portrays the struggles of a working mom who is called upon to go on a quest… and has to drag her quarreling kids along! Also, nice second chance romance. The heroine of The Raven Ring is a more classic beautiful young woman, but a trained warrior who has no time for love and has to deal with a lot of patronizing from a would-be swain (“Don’t block my throwing lines, Daner!”). Fortunately, it turns out she has better options…

  3. Penny says:

Agree with @Cicely – the early books Wrede is still figuring out how to write the story and world build at the same time. Raven Ring is one of my favorites, for the clash of cultures – and when I was younger I was a sucker for a fighting woman, and on the flip side, for a clever thief…

  4. Penny says:

Not a romance, but if you like Star Trek TOS novels, Uhura’s Song is 0.99

Uhura is instrumental in finding the cure to a deadly pandemic using clues from a banned cycle of ancient songs… her linguistic skills and her musical abilities are important. (The author wanted to “give Uhura the plum role she deserved.”) Also planets peopled by intelligent feline type beings. Not your normal Star Trek! One of my favorites.

  5. Lisa F says:

    Miss Buncle’s my pick here!

  6. ReadKnitSnark says:

I came to the Lyra novels after reading and loving the Cecelia and Kate books and other strong later output of Wrede’s… and I was underwhelmed. I think I ended up describing them as “benign”? They do get better towards the end of the series (as @Cicely and @Penny mention), but that strong world building (and sense of character) that I associate with Wrede? Nope, it’s more vague (even vacuous) and disappointing.

That said, there is a spark of something in the Lyra novels, so if you go in not expecting much, there is enjoyment to be derived from reading even the earlier ones. But maybe borrow instead of buying?

  7. cleo says:

@Penny – thanks for the heads up on Uhura’s Song by Janet Kagan. I really love her book Hellspark but don’t remember much about Uhura’s Song except that I enjoyed it when I read it in the early 90s.

  8. The Other Laurel says:

If you like understated British humor, Miss Buncle’s Book & the others in the series are excellent.

  9. chacha1 says:

Everything about ‘Only When It’s Us’ is anti-catnip for me. From the cover to “if I have my way with that crazy-haired, ball-busting hellion, that will be in more than one sense of the word.’ Srsly WtF.

The new cover for ‘Miss Buncle’s Book’ is great. I thoroughly enjoyed that book.

And @Penny another thanks for the heads-up on ‘Uhura’s Song.’ There was a time when I had read ALL the Star Trek TOS tie-in books and I held onto that one for a long time. 🙂

  10. Katie Lynn says:

I read Only When It’s Us and enjoyed it. Not mentioned: the professor is the hero’s brother in law, and that the hero is surly with good reason. I enjoyed it, but it does have some depth for what appears to be a comedy

  11. Penny says:

@cleo & chacha1 yay! I’m glad you found it useful! I remember reading them all in numbered order as a preteen/teen in the 80s/90s… because I have to do a whole series in order, even back then. I did finally let of most of them go during some move or another a decade or so ago… though I kept Diane Duane’s trek books (loveeee My Enemy My Ally) & Janet Kagen’s Uhuras Song in a box somewhere.

  12. Bronte says:

I hated the first book in the Hoyt series. That was an F for me. I think YMMV on the second book When a rogue meets his match. I enjoyed it. Wasn’t her best but very far from an F for me.

  13. Kareni says:

I’m another fan of Uhura’s Song as is my daughter.

  14. Joy says:

Miss Buncle’s book is a classic. Village life in prewar
England, romance, humor about the publishing industry, really, really great. I strongly recommend it. The sequel is also good but this first book is a gem.

  15. Susan/DC says:

I loved Miss Buncle’s Book and bought additional copies to give to friends. The book would have appealed to me no matter when I read it, but it brought warmth and charm just when they were needed in the early, pre-vaccine months of the pandemic.

  16. Rose says:

I’ve read a lot of bad books and in no way does Hoyt’s book deserve an F. It’s a C if you don’t get the story. I thought the hero was fine. I understood where he was coming from. The super grovel was not necessary. If it just wasn’t the reviewer’s type of book, that’s different from an F. I think an F is misleading and unfair.

  17. SB Sarah says:

@Rose: Grades are subjective and entirely up to the reader. Your C may be someone’s F. That’s ok.
