  • The Chosen and the Beautiful

The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo is $2.99! This was mention in a previous Hide Your Wallet. It’s a Great Gatsby retelling with fantasy elements. I heard this one does have some significant triggers, so definitely do some research before buying.

    Immigrant. Socialite. Magician.

Jordan Baker grows up in the most rarefied circles of 1920s American society―she has money, education, a killer golf handicap, and invitations to some of the most exclusive parties of the Jazz Age. She’s also queer, Asian, adopted, and treated as an exotic attraction by her peers, while the most important doors remain closed to her.

But the world is full of wonders: infernal pacts and dazzling illusions, lost ghosts and elemental mysteries. In all paper is fire, and Jordan can burn the cut paper heart out of a man. She just has to learn how.

Nghi Vo’s debut novel reinvents this classic of the American canon as a coming-of-age story full of magic, mystery, and glittering excess, and introduces a major new literary voice.

  • A Peculiar Combination

A Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver

A Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver is $2.99! If you’re looking for a new historical mystery to start with a hint of romance, this might be one worth adding to the TBR pile.

The first in the Electra McDonnell series from Edgar-nominated author Ashley Weaver, set in England during World War II, A Peculiar Combination is a delightful mystery filled with spies, murder, romance, and the author’s signature wit.

“Filled with wry humor, tight suspense, and a delightful cast of characters.”—Alyssa Maxwell, author of the Gilded Newport mysteries

FIRST RULE: DON’T LOSE YOUR CONCENTRATION.

Electra McDonnell and her family earn their living outside the law. Breaking into the homes of the rich and picking the locks on their safes may not be condoned by British law enforcement, but with World War II in full swing, Uncle Mick’s locksmith business just can’t pay the bills anymore.

    SECOND RULE: DON’T MAKE MISTAKES.

So when Uncle Mick receives a tip about a safe full of jewels in an empty house, he and Ellie can’t resist. All is going as planned—until the pair is caught red-handed. But instead of arresting them, government official Major Ramsey has an offer: either Ellie agrees to help him break into a safe and retrieve blueprints crucial to the British war effort, or he turns her over to the police.

    THIRD RULE: DON’T GET CAUGHT.

Ellie doesn’t care for the major’s imperious manner, but she has no choice. However, when they break into the house, they find the safe open and empty, and a German spy dead on the floor. Soon, Ellie and Major Ramsey are forced to put aside their differences to unmask the double agent, and stop Allied plans from falling into enemy hands.

  • Girl, Serpent, Thorn

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

RECOMMENDED: Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust is $2.99! Tara loved this one and gave it an A-:

I adored Girl, Serpent, Thorn. It’s beautifully written, has a complex protagonist who goes on a hell of a journey, and it left me with a book hangover that’s made it hard to get into anything else since I finished it. I can’t stop telling friends, family, and colleagues about it, and I’m going to order a physical copy from our local indie bookstore ASAP.

A captivating and utterly original fairy tale about a girl cursed to be poisonous to the touch, and who discovers what power might lie in such a curse…

There was and there was not, as all stories begin, a princess cursed to be poisonous to the touch. But for Soraya, who has lived her life hidden away, apart from her family, safe only in her gardens, it’s not just a story.

As the day of her twin brother’s wedding approaches, Soraya must decide if she’s willing to step outside of the shadows for the first time. Below in the dungeon is a demon who holds knowledge that she craves, the answer to her freedom. And above is a young man who isn’t afraid of her, whose eyes linger not with fear, but with an understanding of who she is beneath the poison.

Soraya thought she knew her place in the world, but when her choices lead to consequences she never imagined, she begins to question who she is and who she is becoming…human or demon. Princess or monster.

The Shadow and Bone Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

The Shadow and Bone Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo is $4.99 at Amazon! It’s not price-matched elsewhere yet. It also looks like the individual books are on sale, but this is definitely the better deal.

A fantasy saga from #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo, the Shadow and Bone Trilogy is now available together in this ebook edition. This bundle includes: Shadow and BoneSiege and Storm, and Ruin and Rising.

See the Grishaverse come to life on screen with Shadow and Bone, now a Netflix original series.

Training with the Grisha, her country’s magical military elite, Alina falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling. 1. My wish list gleefully barfs up a bunch of sales when I have $0. *sigh* In addition to GIRL, SERPENT, THORN mentioned above:

A MASTER OF DJINN by P. Djèlí Clark is $2.99.

THE DEATH OF JANE LAWRENCE by Caitlin Starling is $3.99.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

I like A PECULIAR COMBINATION—seemed like a solid start to a series. Recommended if you like things like the Maisie Dobbs, Veronica Speedwell, or Amelia Peabody mysteries.

  3. Lisa F says:

I loved all of these books; the Vo and Girl, Serpent, Thorn are particularly outstanding; I have them both A’s.

  4. MaryK says:

Martha Wells’ Exit Strategy is on sale for 4.99. Not as cheap as regular sales but it’s half the usual price.

  5. Lara says:

Christopher Buehlman’s “The Blacktongue Thief” is $2.99; I grabbed it in the same sale as “The Chosen and the Beautiful”. It’s a dark fantasy–humans have been at war against orcs/goblins for so long and so viciously that it’s entirely possible there are not enough humans left to viably maintain as a species–but it’s also very sarcastic and funny, and one of the protagonists is a lady knight who is 100% ready to break some heads. It was one of my favorite reads last year.

  6. Sujata R says:

Just finished reading A Peculiar Combination. Kept me interested and the plot moves along at a good pace. Promising start to a series although I did find the “romance” pieces more annoying than I expected – hopefully will be smoothly resolved in the next few books.

  7. Darlynne says:

Audible US seems to have marked most books down by 50%. Everything in my wish list and all the titles I looked at were marked down, too. VESPERTINE, THE ROOK, READY PLAYER ONE. Some are really inexpensive, others still around $15, but certainly worth a look.

  8. Darlynne says:

Further investigation: The Murderbot audio books are all @$4.00; yes, they’re short, but even the full-length novel is the same and members don’t have to use a credit at that price.

I have to talk myself out getting all the books by Tanya Huff, Wen Spencer *breathe*. It appears that newer books are half off, so worth using a credit, but holy guacamole, $3-8 for some favorites is a great deal.

  9. drewbird says:

N.R. Walker’s Code Red (MM) is only 99 pennies! I remember liking this one a lot – though there was definite mental health / anxiety stuff dealt with by one of the main characters. I felt it was handled well (as in not belittled and treated with compassion) but just in case people are wanting to avoid that I feel it is worth a mention.
